  • Patent number: 11421783
Abstract: A spreader structure for a ring seal for sealing an annular gap, includes a radially inner first component with an inner contact surface, a radially outer second component with an outer contact surface, and a first spreading mechanism formed between these two components that includes a first spreading bevel formed on one of the two components, and a first spreading element formed on the other component, that can be moved along the first spreading bevel. The two components can be displaced in relation to one another, from an assembly state to a spreading state, by means of which the first spreading element is moved from a first section of the first spreading bevel to a second section of the spreading bevel, enlarging a radial spacing between the inner contact surface and the outer contact surface. The spreader structure has a second spreading mechanism.

  • Patent number: 8794638
Abstract: A sealing array for positioning in an annular space between tubular members to provide a seal therebetween. The sealing array includes a pair of oppositely disposed backup rings, each defining a primary outer seal member of the sealing array. A pair of rigid cap rings is disposed between the backup rings. Each cap ring has a substantially planar surface and an oppositely disposed surface that engages one of the backup rings to energize the backup rings upon the application of sufficient pressure. The cap rings are sized to form controlled extrusion gaps with both tubular members. An energizing element is disposed between the planar surfaces of the cap rings. The energizing element engages a planar surface of at least one of the cap rings and seals the extrusion gaps associated with the engaged cap ring upon the application of sufficient pressure.

  • Patent number: 8313105
Abstract: A female hydraulic coupling member has an elastomer probe seal molded to or abutting a ring-shaped metal base which is adapted to exert a compressive force on the probe seal when exposed to hydraulic fluid pressure. The compressive force causes the seal to expand in a radial direction thereby increasing its sealing effectiveness. A retainer nut for holding the seal in the receiving chamber may have a angled surface which acts to urge the seal in an inward, radial direction when an axial, compressive force is applied to the seal.

  • Patent number: 7121554
Abstract: In a high-pressure cylinder with an axial plunger, a seal assembly for scaling the gap between the cylinder wall and the plunger. The assembly is disposed in an annual recess in the wall having an open end and a bottom opposite thereto, and comprises a plunger-sealing ring, a cylinder-sealing ring, a resilient low-pressure ring, and an annual seal holder. The seal holder urges the plunger-sealing ring against the cylinder-sealing ring and the low-pressure ring, and urges the latter two rings against the recess bottom and against each other. The plunger-sealing ring and the cylinder-sealing ring are metallic, their mutual contact surfaces are fitted to each other, and the plunger-sealing ring has sufficient section modulus to ensure that under high pressure the contact and bending deformations at the mutual contact surfaces will be sufficiently small as to keep a tight fit therebetween.

  • Patent number: 6062570
Abstract: A stem seal having first and second wiping members circumjacent a stem is disposed within a bore. A lubricant-bearing ring is disposed about the stem within the bore between the wiping members, under compression therefrom. Projections from the wiping members intrude into the lubrication ring so as to depress the central surface areas thereof. Similar projections are used to center a coil spring against one of these seal members and against an additional seal member. By forming the lubricant ring of open-cell loam or mesh construction, superior lubricant bearing capacities may be achieved.

  • Patent number: 5997003
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are described for improved sealing across an annular space between facing sealing surfaces. Methods for mechanically setting and pressure energizing sealing ring assemblies are also described. In one aspect, several sealing ring assemblies are described, each of which include an outer seal body formed of elastically deformable metal and having an annular base with a pair of legs extending from the base to form a channel. A plurality of predominately non-deformable segments are positioned between the legs. The use of segments substantially reduces detrimental hoop stress which would hinder effective setting of a seal between the inner and outer members. In preferred embodiments, the legs and the segments each present raised portions which are offset from each other. The offset arrangement of the raised portions permit the ring assembly to be mechanically set by radial spring loading through elastic deformation of portions of the seal body.
