Abstract: A thermoplastically processable cured rubber composition comprises a crosslinked or cured urethane polymer dispersed in a matrix made of a thermoplastic polymeric material. In one aspect, the matrix forms a continuous phase and the crosslinked urethane polymer is in the form of particles forming a non-continuous phase. The processable rubber compositions can be made by a process of dynamic vulcanization of a urethane prepolymer material in the presence of the thermoplastic matrix material. The process involves combining a urethane prepolymer, a curing agent capable of reacting with the urethane prepolymer, and a thermoplastic material to form a mixture, and heating the mixture at a temperature and for a time sufficient to effect reaction between the curing agent and the prepolymer. Mechanical energy is supplied to the mixture during the heating step so that the crosslinking or curing of the urethane prepolymer occurs while the prepolymer and thermoplastic are undergoing a mixing.

  • Patent number: 6746020
Abstract: A metal gasket is designed so that mounting and removal from a cylinder block using a bolt is easy regardless of the direction of the attaching surface and there is no risk of moving or drop off. The gasket is made of two laminated metal base plates. At a base plate part near a bolt hole of one metal base plate, a bolt engaging piece projects so that the diameter of the bolt hole is smaller than the diameter of the bolt for fastening, and an assistant piece for handling is integrated thereto. At the base plate part of the other plate overlapping the assistant piece, a cut recess is formed. When inserting the bolt into the bolt hole of the metal gasket, the bolt engaging piece is struck against the bolt and is elastically bent, and allows the bolt to pass. The gasket mounted on the bolt is kept at the mounting position by the pressing action to the bolt from the impact resilience force of the bolt engaging piece.

Abstract: In the gasket, a shim member formed of shim portions and connecting portion is assembled with an upper metal plate with curved portions and flanges such that each shim portion is located between the flange and a base portion of the upper plate, and a lower metal plate is placed under the upper plate not to overlap the flanges and the shim member. The shim member is provided with an identification sign for identifying the thickness of the gasket and an assembly sign for identifying the orientation of the shim member at the connecting portion where the sealing ability is not affected, which can be seen from the back of the gasket after assembly. Therefore, when the shim member is assembled with the upper plate, the orientation of the shim member can be identified easily. Also, after assembly, the orientation of the shim member as well as the thickness of the gasket can be identified easily.

  • Patent number: 6464493
Abstract: A multi-axis rotary seal system to provide a gas-tight seal between a stationary hood and the end of a rotating tube kiln comprises a stationary hood positioned at the end of the rotary tube and having extended therefrom, a fully flexible bellows attached at the other end to a structural ring which, in turn, is attached to a graphite ring, slidably pressed against a flange on the rotary tube to form an atmospheric seal. The structural ring is held to the stationary hood by multi-axis supports that allow movement of the ring in three axial directions. In operation, during expansion and contraction of the rotating tube and eccentricities of motion, the integrity of the slidable seal formed by the graphite ring against the mating surface of the tube flange, is maintained by a biasing device pressing the graphite ring and the tube flange together in slidable engagement.

Abstract: The metal gasket, which can cope with high performance of an engine, is constituted by two sheets of elastic metal substrates providing a bead on the peripheral portion of a cylinder opening and an annular metal thin plate, which is thinner than the elastic metal substrate and surrounds the cylinder opening and is arranged between the substrates. The annular metal thin plate is fixed on the substrate by inserting an engaging portion solidly projected from the outside periphery into a slit formed on the substrate and folding it.

Abstract: This invention relates to an arrangement for sealing a closed chamber in which equipment is to be replaced and especially to a chamber in which equipment is to be replaced while the chamber is to be maintained closed. The arrangement includes a channel filled with a fluid, such as water, and a skirt arranged to extend into the fluid to form the seal. As the skirt extends down into the liquid, a portal space is formed at the opening in the chamber and the opening preferably includes a gate for closing the chamber from the portal space and the outside.

Abstract: In an attachment structure of a gasket for a refrigerant-seal, both first and second connection members are disposed to define a seal space by first and second opposite surfaces and first and second wall surfaces, and the gasket having a beam portion is disposed in the seal space so that one end surface of the gasket is held on the first wall surface of the first connection member and the other end surface of the gasket is separated from the second wall surface of the second connection member by a predetermined clearance, before both the first and second connection members are fastened. After both the first and second connection members are fastened, the gasket extends, and the other end surface of the gasket press-contacts the second wall surface.
