Abstract: A seal for a flange includes two separate sealing lips to seal the interfaces between the flange and the intake manifold and the cylinder head. One lip seals against the head surface when the flange is bolted to the cylinder head. The other lip seals around the intake manifold when the intake manifold, such as a tubular intake manifold, is inserted into the flange. The flange seal is made of elastomeric material, such as rubber, and is integrally bonded to the flange made of metal, such as steel or aluminum, during the molding process to form a flange seal having a one-piece construction. The flange seal also includes a gap between one of the sealing lips and an outer surface of the flange that provides a space for the displaced rubber to flow when compressed by the cylinder head. • Publication number: 20040201180
Abstract: An improved exhaust pipe flange ring gasket is principally defined by a pair of mating exhaust pipe flanges. One of the flanges has an annular groove extending in the one of the mating flanges. One or more metal Belleville spring washers or wave spring washers are wrapped within a stainless cover to define a hoop-style spring ring disposed within the groove. The metal washer replaces a traditional spiral wound core or graphite filler that tends to oxidize at high operating temperatures; such oxidation adversely affects sealing performance. Conversely, the washer, which can be either a Belleville or wave spring, is comprised of a hard stainless steel that will not oxidize at high operating temperatures. Gasket sealing performance is vastly improved, even though the Belleville or wave spring washer is relatively inexpensive. The Belleville or wave spring washer provides relatively stiff spring resilience to accommodate deflection along its axial compressive direction.

When clamped between flange surfaces, the edge coating engages, conforms to, and seals against the flange surfaces to provide a seal against both interfacial and intersticial migration of fluid past the gasket. At the same time, the inherently good compression failure resistance of the compressible gasket material of the base sheet is preserved. Thus, a gasket with enhanced sealability and compression failure resistance is provided.

Abstract: An edge coated gasket includes a base sheet made of compressible gasket material and having opposed faces and an interior edge surrounding and defining an aperture. An edge coating of polymer or other material is disposed on and seals the interior edge of the base sheet and may project beyond the facial planes of the base sheet to define protruding rims extending around the aperture. Face coatings may also be applied to one or more of the faces extending in relatively narrow strips around the aperture of the base sheet.

Abstract: An air intake manifold gasket has a perforated core of metal including protrusions or tangs extending from a first planar surface and a second planar surface of the core. Joined to each planar surface of the core is an expanded graphite sheet to form a gasket body having planar surfaces. Screen printed to form a bead on peripheral edges of the planar surfaces of the gasket body is a silicone foam rubber material adapted to replace traditional silicone rubber structures used for the same purpose. The silicone foam rubber material includes a foaming agent that causes the material to expand during an oven-curing period. The amount of expansion of the silicone rubber coating is up to three times the thickness of the coating originally applied. As disclosed, the oven cure is for approximately 10 minutes at about 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

Abstract: A gasket is disclosed, which is adapted for the use in sealing of a tri-face area where a cylinder block, cylinder head and timing-chain housing meet together and come into abutment against one another. With the gasket of this invention, a deposit of bonding agent is applied on an end lug of a solid gasket material to improve the adhesive property and close adherence of the solid gasket material with a fluid gasket material that is filled in the tri-face area. The fluid gasket material charged in the tri-face area is securely fastened to the solid gasket material through the bonding agent. The end lug of the solid gasket material on which the bonding agent is applied is exposed to the tri-face area where both the cylinder head and the cylinder block are cut at their confronting edges to form bevels.

Abstract: An MLS cylinder head gasket includes a relatively thick intermediate layer having resilient sealing beads flanked by stopper beads. The stopper beads limit compression of the sealing beads, which surround combustion cylinder bore apertures. The three-layer gasket, particularly designed for heavy duty racing engines, provides a relatively robust cross-section in web-areas between cylinder bore apertures. A thin bottom layer includes wrap-around flanged portions extending about cylinder bore edges of the intermediate layer to partially overlap cylinder bore aperture areas of that layer. A thin top layer overlies the intermediate layer, as well as the overlapping portions of the bottom layer. In one described embodiment, the overlapping portions are limited to cylinder bore edges between cylinder bores. As a between-engine-overhaul indication of engine health, the top gasket layer is adapted via plastic deformation to form a permanent indentation in an aluminum cylinder head to signal excessive engine operation.

Abstract: A monolayer metal gasket is disclosed, which may be kept against deformation around a bolt hole and further made stable in sealing stress around a gas hole between mating surfaces of confronting components. A first extra thickness around the gas hole is provided by turning back a part of a metallic sheet on a major flat of the metallic sheet, with leaving a space open between them to form a folded construction having elasticity. A second extra thickness around a bolt hole is a closely layered construction of nearly rigid body little to be deformed. When the monolayer metal gasket is squeezed between the mating surfaces of the confronting components, a clearance between the mating surfaces may be regulated to a preselected distance by virtue of the second extra thickness that is little to be deformed.
