Abstract: The invention relates to the application of a projection to a metal layer of a metallic cylinder-head gasket for an internal-combustion engine having at least one elastic metal sheet, which is provided with one opening or a plurality of adjacent openings depending on the number of combustion chambers of the internal-combustion engine, a bead being provided in the at least one elastic metal sheet around each opening, at a distance from the latter, so that a straight section of sheet metal is left clear in the region of the edge of the opening, for which bead a spring travel limiter or stopper, which runs coaxially with respect to the bead and is formed by the projection, is provided, the projection being produced from a mixture which contains a plastic with a high mineral filler content. A mixture of an elastomer in particular with a filler which has been surface-treated by means of a silane is used.

  • Patent number: 7059609
Abstract: A multilayer metal gasket has a pair of outer active layers separated by an intermediate layer. The outer active layers are formed with at least one pair of aligned apertures and sealing beads surrounding the apertures in radially outwardly spaced relation thereto presenting laterally opposed sealing surfaces of the active layers of predetermined spacing or thickness when the gasket is in a compressed free state. The intermediate layer extends radially inwardly beyond the apertures and is provided with a cold formed stopper portion having a thickness greater than the combined material thicknesses of the intermediate layer and outer active layers but less than the thickness of the sealing beads. The stopper portion is cold formed under a compressive load exceeding the compressive load required to deform the sealing beads beyond their elastic limit, thereby preventing irreversible damage to the sealing beads.

  • Patent number: 7017918
Abstract: A gasket having a gasket plate formed with an aperture. An annular flange provides a stopper seal around the aperture. The flange has spaced areas of varying thickness. The gasket is formed by punching an opening in the gasket plate inwardly of an annular array of bolt-holes. An annular portion of the plate surrounding the opening is folded back to form the flange and place it in surface-to-surface contact with the plate. The areas of the flange adjacent to the bolt-holes are compressed a greater amount than areas of the flange more remote from the bolt-holes.

  • Patent number: 7017917
Abstract: A crankcase is coupled to a lower end face of a cylinder block of an engine and includes first and second case halves coupled to each other in a plane perpendicular to joint surfaces of the cylinder block and the crankcase. A U-shaped seal groove is defined in one of the joint surfaces of the case halves. Enlarged recesses are made at opposite ends of the seal groove. A bar-shaped seal member having enlarged end portions formed at opposite ends thereof is mounted in the groove such that the enlarged end portions are filled in the enlarged recesses. Thus, it is possible to ensure accuracy of the positioning of the bar-shaped seal member without the need for a high level skill; thereby, reliably sealing portions of intersection between the joint surfaces of the cylinder block and the crankcase and the joint surfaces of the case halves of the crankcase.

  • Patent number: 6997462
Abstract: A cylinder head gasket is provided for an engine with low rigidity and a high maximum pressure. In the cylinder head gasket, it is possible to enhance the secondary sealing without greatly affecting the primary sealing. The cylinder head gasket is formed of a first metal plate with a first full bead under a folded portion around a cylinder bore, and a second metal plate with a second full bead around the first full bead. The second metal plate is made of a material with elasticity greater than that of the first metal plate, and is arranged with a gap relative to an outer edge of the folded portion so as not to overlap. The first full bead and the second full bead have top portions facing in opposite directions.

  • Patent number: 6969072
Abstract: A multi-layered cylinder head gasket for positioning between a cylinder head and a cylinder block of an engine includes upper and lower compression layers and a stopper layer. The compression layers and stopper layer all include apertures that mate together to define a peripheral edge. The stopper layer further includes a folded portion and a main body portion. The folded portion has a plurality of waves that contact the main body portion of the stopper layer to form a stopper when folded over. The stopper is positioned at the peripheral edge of the mated aperture. The waves deform under high compression loads generated by the joining of the cylinder head and the cylinder block. The deformation balances the stresses generated by the compression loads around the mated aperture.
