Patent number: 6962345Abstract: A gasket includes an intermediate layer having resilient sealing beads flanked by stopper beads. The three-layer gasket, particularly designed for heavy duty racing engines, provides a relatively robust cross-section in web-areas between cylinder bore apertures. A thin bottom layer includes wrap-around flanged portions extending about cylinder bore edges of the intermediate layer to partially overlap cylinder bore aperture areas of that layer. The flanged portions include a plurality of waves to increase forces to generate the seal. A thin top layer overlies the intermediate layer, as well as the overlapping portions of the bottom layer. In one described embodiment, the overlapping portions are limited to cylinder bore edges between cylinder bores. As a between-engine-overhaul indication of engine health, the top gasket layer is adapted via plastic deformation to form a permanent indentation in an aluminum cylinder head to signal excessive engine operation.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2003Date of Patent: November 8, 2005Assignee: Dana CorporationInventors: Josefino T. Patent number: 6957815Abstract: A multi-layer steel (MLS) cylinder head gasket includes a unitary stopper layer interposed between mirror image beaded outer layers. A stopper ring situated about the boundary of a combustion opening on the stopper layer is formed by folding over the boundary edge of the stopper layer material. The stopper ring pre-stresses the gasket interface about the combustion opening during securement of a cylinder head to an engine block. The stopper layer includes at least one raised epoxy bead structure, circumferentially and closely surrounding the outside edge of the stopper ring. The epoxy bead acts to spread load, and hence to avoid point loads at the combustion aperture boundary. The epoxy bead is applied to the gasket by screen-printing, and may incorporate a powdered metal for limiting bead resiliency. The bead height is greater than the thickness of the stopper ring, to reduce risk of splitting the stopper layer material.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 2002Date of Patent: October 25, 2005Assignee: Dana CorporationInventor: Josefino T. Patent number: 6951338Abstract: A multi-layered cylinder head gasket for positioning between a cylinder head and a cylinder block of an engine includes a spacer layer and a stopper layer. The stopper layer includes either a wave or rigid stopper positioned at a periphery of an aperture of the stopper layer. A sealing bead is positioned adjacent the stopper. Overall, the stopper layer has a generally uniform thickness. The spacer layer, however, has first and second thicknesses with the second thickness being generally less than the first thickness. The second thickness of the spacer layer mates with the stopper and sealing bead when the stopper layer and spacer layer are joined together. A transition area is positioned between the first and second thicknesses. The variable thickness of the spacer layer permits the gasket to provide generally equal sealing stresses while subjected to variable compression forces.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 2003Date of Patent: October 4, 2005Assignee: Dana CorporationInventor: Michael J. Patent number: 6676134Abstract: A multi-layer steel cylinder head gasket includes a spacer layer between two beaded mirror image outer layers. A wire ring stopper extends about the boundary of a combustion opening in the stopper layer; the ring is radially spaced from the mirror image beaded outer layer extremities. The ring is covered by a flange folded thereover; the flange extends radially outwardly to overlie the boundary edge of the stopper layer at the combustion opening. The stopper ring pre-stresses the gasket interface at the combustion opening upon securement of a cylinder head to an engine block. Because the stopper ring is spaced from the beaded outer layers, the stresses imposed on the wire ring are decoupled from the beaded outer layers, and lower incidences of bead cracking are realized. In addition, the wire ring diameter is greater than the thickness of the stopper layer, reducing unnecessary compression loads on the stopper layer.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2002Date of Patent: January 13, 2004Assignee: Dana CorporationInventors: Joel E. Publication number: 20030222408Abstract: A metal gasket assembly has a gasket plate and an annular grommet. The gasket plate is formed with an opening having opposing surfaces adjacent the opening to define a predetermined fixed thickness of a plate. The annular grommet has an elastically deformable U-shaped body. The U-shaped body has legs presenting outer sealing surfaces defining an initial undeformed thickness that is greater than the thickness of the gasket plate. The opening formed in the gasket plate receives the grommet. A compressive force applied in a generally perpendicular direction to the opposing surfaces of the gasket plate deform the legs of the body to a reduced thickness corresponding substantially to the thickness of the gasket plate. When the compressive force is reduced with changes in operating conditions, the legs of the grommet return toward their original undeformed thickness to maintain a seal.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 31, 2002Publication date: December 4, 2003Applicant: Federal-Mogul World Wide, Inc.Inventors: Robert M. Patent number: 6588765Abstract: A monolayer metal gasket is disclosed, which may be kept against deformation around a bolt hole and further made stable in sealing stress around a gas hole between mating surfaces of confronting components. A first extra thickness around the gas hole is provided by turning back a part of a metallic sheet on a major flat of the metallic sheet, with leaving a space open between them to form a folded construction having elasticity. A second extra thickness around a bolt hole is a closely layered construction of nearly rigid body little to be deformed. When the monolayer metal gasket is squeezed between the mating surfaces of the confronting components, a clearance between the mating surfaces may be regulated to a preselected distance by virtue of the second extra thickness that is little to be deformed.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2001Date of Patent: July 8, 2003Assignee: Nippon Thompson Co., Ltd.Inventors: Tsuyoshi Hiramatsu, Kiyoshi Sugimoto, Kazuya Yoshijima

Patent number: 6585272Abstract: A cylinder head gasket is used for an internal combustion engine with at least three cylinder bores. The gasket is formed of a metal plate extending substantially throughout an entire area to be sealed, and a reinforce coating. The metal plate includes two end holes, at least one inner hole sandwiched between the two end holes, and beads surrounding the respective holes. The two end holes and at least one inner hole are arranged linearly to correspond to the cylinder bores of the engine. The reinforce coating is deposited around the peripheral portion of the at least one inner hole so that sealing pressures are formed substantially equally around the two end holes and at least one inner hole. Other reinforce coatings may be deposited around the peripheral portions of the end holes.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2001Date of Patent: July 1, 2003Assignee: Ishikawa Gasket Co., Ltd.Inventors: Susumu Inamura, Yutaka Kato

Patent number: 6565097Abstract: A cylinder head gasket comprises a plate, an annular groove formed to surround a combustion chamber opening formed in the plate, a metallic shim fitted into the annular groove, and a full bead located outward of the shim and projecting in the same direction as the shim. The shim is mounted on the plate by an intermittent welding. With this construction, the manufacturing cost can be reduced in comparison to the use of a conventional continuous welding or multi-layer welding. In addition, the thermal deformation of the shim and the plate itself is reduced as compared with when continuous welding or multi-layer welding is used, thus allowing the sealing capability to be improved. In addition, the cylinder head gasket is preferred for use in an engine of a higher combustion temperature than the combustion temperature when the shim is formed of a resinous material.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 2001Date of Patent: May 20, 2003Assignee: Taiho Kogyo Co., Ltd.Inventor: Osamu Jinno
