Variable Denier Patents (Class 28/243)
  • Patent number: 6021632
Abstract: An apparatus for producing thick/thin effects in a filament yarn, whereby between inlet and outlet gallets or pairs of pinch rollers, in a stretching zone, the filament yarn contacts the periphery of at least one rotating disk which is heated and is formed with at least one region of reduced radius in which there is no contact between the filament yarn and the disk. The filament yarn is thereby stretched only in regions in which it is heated by contact with the disk periphery and remains thick in those regions in which it is unheated because of the presence of the recess.

  • Patent number: 5956828
Abstract: The present invention relates to a sanding apparatus used for the production of air textured yarn and false twist yarn. The apparatus comprises a motor, a housing provided with a guide groove, and a frictional disk connected to the motor and enclosed in the housing. The apparatus can be arranged in an intermediate section of the production process to generate short hair on the outer surface of yarn by the contact between the frictional disk and moving yarn. Accordingly the products made by the apparatus have soft tactile feelings when touched.

  • Patent number: 5503928
Abstract: In the manufacture of reinforced composites having reinforcing filaments within a matrix, a filament consisting of a staple yarn spun from discontinuous fibers with low twist is subject to controlled stretching to vary the weight per unit length of the yarn along the length of the yarn. Apparatus for performing the stretching operation comprises two roll pairs spaced apart along the yard feed path and rotated at controlled relative speeds to obtain the desired elongation of the yarn. The yarn may be used directly in producing a composite, e.g., by applying resin to the yarn and winding it onto a mandrel or former, or it may be used to prepare a perform, prepeg tape, woven fabric or the like to be used in the production of a shaped composite. The invention makes it possible to vary the characteristics, e.g., thickness and/or strength, over a composite in a way not previously possible.

  • Patent number: 5349729
Abstract: Method and apparatus to selectively treat adjacent yarns in draw machine to provide different characteristics in the synthetic yarn being drawn and beamed. The yarn running between the feed rolls and draw rolls is selectively blown upwardly away from the heater to provide portions of heat set and unheat set drawn yarn.

  • Patent number: 5333364
Abstract: The present invention discloses a method of draw warping a plurality of partially oriented synthetic continuous filaments traveling in parallel side by side relation to produce denier variations randomly along the length of each filament and randomly from filament to filament. This is accomplished by transporting the filaments collectively through a draw zone defined between first and second filament engaging members and by imposing a common lengthwise stretching force simultaneously to the filaments with the draw zone while heating the filaments and, finally, by causing the filaments to slip randomly and draw non-uniformly on at least one of the filament engaging members.

  • Patent number: 4684359
Abstract: A thermoplastic draw tape having thick and wide end portions with a relatively thin and narrow central portion between them is produced by movable clamps which stretch the tape between stationary clamps to produce the stretched, oriented portions of the tape. A plurality of movable clamps and a plurality of stationary clamps produce a plurality of stretched central portions so that the stretching time can be greater than the cycle time of bag making machinery with which the stretching apparatus is synchronized.

  • Patent number: 4242862
Abstract: A polyester yarn composed of a plurality of individual fibrous materials such as endless filaments or fibers. Each of these fibrous material is provided with cross-sectional thicker portions, thinner cross sectional portions and intermediate thickness-size portions randomly distributed along the axial direction thereof in a particular condition of distribution of cross-sections of these fibrous material. The above-mentioned polyester yarn involved a textured yarn applied to a drawn polyester multifilament yarn having the above-mentioned basic condition. To produce the polyester yarn according to the present invention, it is the basic condition that the undrawn polyester multifilament yarn should be drawn under a condition of a drawing ratio below a natural draw ratio of undrawn filaments of said undrawn multifilament yarn and a drawing temperature above a crystallizing initiating temperature of said undrawn filaments.

  • Patent number: 4209881
Abstract: A device for intermittently tensioning a yarn passing therethrough in which a motor cam acts on a tension train mounted on a fixed shaft. The tension train is composed of a tension adjuster which provides tension on a base plate, spring, and tension discs mounted between a stop and the tension adjuster. In an embodiment of the invention a method for intermittently tensioning a yarn by passing the yarn between the tension discs of the device described above.

  • Patent number: 4044089
Abstract: A process and apparatus for producing thick and thin filaments wherein the deniers of the thick portions of the filaments are randomized by passing an undrawn nylon feed yarn from a supply package under tension through the nip in a feed/cott roll combination, the cott roll having at least one peripheral slot periodically opening the nip. The yarn is forwarded from this nip by a draw roll assembly operated at a peripheral velocity of 3-5X that of the feed roll to fully draw the drawn portions. A snubbing device is used upstream of the feed/cott roll assembly to provide a yarn tension immediately upstream of the nip.
