Patent number: 7946606Abstract: A backup device for limiting the rotation of converter dollies about a trailer hitch is presented. A dolly mounted, laterally extending moveable bar is selectively pressed against the vertical members of the trailer's underride guard in order to prevent rotation of the dolly relative to the trailer. The bar is retracted from the trailer to allow significant rotation of the dolly during normal forward operation. The backup device is operable with many makes and models of trailers because the laterally extending bar provides a large area that the trailer underride guard may contact. In addition to being operable with many models of trailers, the present invention does not require specific features to be added onto a trailer pulling the converter dolly. Additionally, the large contact area of the laterally extending bar allows the device to function with dollies that are significantly rotated about a trailer hitch. The backup device is also robust, aerodynamic, and self contained.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2008Date of Patent: May 24, 2011Assignee: Vanguard National Trailer Corp.Inventor: Mark A Roush

Patent number: 6443475Abstract: A movable drawbar control system for use on a typical tractor and specifically on endless track type tractors. The drawbar control system is hydraulically controlled by the user of the tractor via controls in the cab. The system uses a hydraulic cylinder to operate independently movable bar lock flaps. The design of the invention is such that inward and outward motion of the hydraulic cylinder changes the orientation of the bar lock flaps between an engaged vertical position or a disengaged horizontal position. These flaps are used to lock a drawbar into a center position or allow the drawbar to swivel freely from side to side along a pivot bar. Additionally, the bar lock flaps are biased with springs that place a rotation force on them so that they tend toward an engaged or vertical orientation when the hydraulic cylinder is engaged to move them to this position.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 2000Date of Patent: September 3, 2002Inventor: Clayton F. Patent number: 6340167Abstract: This invention is a trailer-tractor rig coupling that prevents jackknifing. It performs like a standard coupling in all normal cases, but if on icy roads, the semi slips and turns opposite to the steering wheel, the coupling brake locks the semi to the tractor. Then when the semi responds to the front wheels again, the brake releases and operates in a normal way.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 2000Date of Patent: January 22, 2002Inventor: Joseph J. Boyd

Patent number: 6109814Abstract: An implement-positioning apparatus used on an implement-towing vehicle such as a tractor includes a draft arm, a lift link, and a mechanism coupling the arm and the link together. The mechanism selectively permits floating arm movement (and therefore floating implement movement) relative to the link. In the improvement, the mechanism includes a clevis-like attachment member fixed on the link and having two arms, each with a slot extending therealong. A pivot-mounted selection member is coupled to the attachment member by a pin through the slots and moves between a first position engaging the attachment member and a second position away from the attachment member. When the selection member is in the second position, the pin is free to move along the slots and thereby permit the draft arm and the implement coupled thereto to "float" and, within limits set by the length of the slots, seek its own elevation under the urging of external forces.Type: GrantFiled: January 2, 1998Date of Patent: August 29, 2000Assignee: Case CorporationInventors: Teresa L.
