  • Patent number: 6045159
Abstract: A holder for a book, such as a paperback or hard cover book, comprises a stiff flat member creased to provide a central stationary panel corresponding to the spine of the book, and a pair of pivoted panels corresponding to the front and back of the book. A spring assembly comprises a plurality of long concave thin metal members connected together by a strip of tape and connected to the stiff flat member by a pop rivet. The ends of the springs are received by a pair of plastic sleeves which are stitched to the stiff flat member. The stiff flat member is covered by a vinyl sheet in such a way as to have a curved edge providing a radius of at least 1/16". A transparent strap connects to the opposite sides of the book holder and presses open pages of the book against the flat stiff member. • Patent number: 5988684
Abstract: Books with internal mechanization have rotary and linear drive mechanisms which displace objects along linear, non-linear, rotary and three-dimensional paths relative to the book pages are described. Spatially arranged cut-outs in the pages which correspond to the range of motion of the displaced and translated objects allow different moving objects to be viewed at different areas of the book from page to page. Battery powered drive mechanisms with push-button operation accessible from the front of the book enables easy, selective activation of the moving objects, independent of the position of the front cover and pages relative to the back cover. Belt-driven wheels provide inherent clutching action to prevent damage to the drive mechanism. • Patent number: 5961149
Abstract: The covers and flaps of the cover construction of the book and toy assembly are opened and laid flat. Pop-up and fixed structures on the opened cover construction form a village, and a path or track passes through and by the village. The path passes over the front and rear covers, the spine therebetween, and the front and rear flaps folded out from the respective covers. A toy train stored in a storage compartment mounted on the front cover can be removed therefrom by the user, wound up, placed on the track and allowed to run around the track, and thereby through the village. Pressing a button on the inside of the book spine causes a noise making device to emit a train whistle noise to add realism and enjoyment to the train playing experience. Indicia and pictures on the flaps and readable with the covers open and the flaps closed tell a story about the train traveling through the village.

  • Patent number: 5653470
Abstract: The present invention relates to an object that, in its closed configuration, rather than resembling a sculpture preferably has an essentially book-like form. In most instances the pages may be shaped but the covers of the book are flat and play an integral part in the stability of the alternative configuration adopted by the book in the open configuration. Each of the pages is also self-supporting on the binding in the open configuration, preferably also having sufficient rigidity to bear on its edge all or a substantial part of the weight of the rest of the book.

  • Patent number: 5653471
Abstract: A nested book assembly for a child is composed of a first book having a front cover, a back cover, and a plurality of pages attached between the two covers and a second book having a front cover, a back cover, and a plurality of pages attached between the two covers. The second book has a shape which substantially corresponds to the shape of a cavity formed in the front cover of the first book so that the second book may be frictionally retained within the cavity. The nested book assembly may include one or more puzzle pieces which are frictionally retained within one or more cavities formed in one or more of the books, the overall shape of each of the puzzle pieces substantially corresponding to the shape of a respective one of the cavities in which the puzzle pieces may be frictionally retained.

  • Patent number: 5639123
Abstract: The invention relates to a note pad holder used in bed, darkness, or the like. The integrated features include a padded outer frame and center webbing for support of a note pad of the removable, self-stick variety. The note pad is held in place by ridges molded into the padded frame and protruding from the inner surfaces of said frame. This allows for the note pad to be securely held in place while still providing access to the full top surface of the note. A notch in the padded frame is used to secure an illuminated writing device or other type of writing utensil. The padded nature of the holder and the access to an illuminated writing device provides the user with a safe, easy, and potentially lighted means of utilizing a note pad while in bed.

  • Patent number: 5636868
Abstract: A holder apparatus acts in frictional cooperation with books, notebooks, folders, and other hand held rigid or semi-rigid binders containing reading material. The bolder allows one-handed manipulation of the book, notebook, folder, or binder free of accidental dropping or slipping. A strap having inelastic and elastic portions, and fasteners on each free end, allows the strap to encircle the book, notebook, folder or binder. A strap having a single inelastic or elastic portion, and fasteners, allows the strap to encircle the book, notebook, folder or binder. The fasteners releasably attach the strap to the book, notebook, folder or binder. A hand piece attached to the strap is adapted to receive a person's hand and allows easy manipulation and holding of the book, notebook, folder or binder. The hand piece is adjustable to accommodate both large and small hands of a user.

  • Patent number: 5626365
Abstract: A two-way book especially useful when reading to a group of young children. The book includes a binding and a plurality of pairs of pages which are movably attached to the binding. Each pair of pages has a first page and a second page with corresponding indicia thereon. Each pair of pages is also movable between an open position and a viewing position. In the open position, the first and second pages of at least one pair are substantially adjacent one another with the binding extending therebetween. In the demonstrating position, the first and second pages of one pair face opposite one another with the remaining pairs of book pages therebetween. Furthermore, the second page faces the reader of the book and the first page faces the listener of the reader so that the listener can observe the indicia as the reader reads the book. Preferably, the indicia on each page of a pair of pages is identical and includes both a text and an illustration.

  • Patent number: 5622384
Abstract: A foldable card and method of making has multiple panels connected by fold lines which are placed laterally inward from free peripheral edges of end panels such that the card can be die cut in a folded configuration around an entire periphery of the card without entirely eliminating the fold lines. In a preferred method of making the cards, card stock is folded along the fold lines prior to cutting. The fold lines of the card are spaced at intervals to define different widths of adjoining panels so that when folded in a "Z" configuration a free peripheral edge of an end panel overlaps or underlaps a fold line. There may be multiple fold line interconnected panels between end panels. The fold lines may be oriented generally vertically or generally horizontally relative to the face of the card.

  • Patent number: 5599048
Abstract: A book is formed from a number of rigid pages each formed from a stiff material. All of the indicia on the pages are formed from a material having luminescent properties and also having a thickness on the page to form a relief pattern on the page. The luminescent also includes colored pigment providing different colors on the page. The indicium elements on each page are arranged relative to the next adjacent page so that they do not overlap when the pages are closed. An edge bead is applied onto relatively thick page edges to illuminate the edges and to provide a soft feel to the edges.

  • Patent number: 5590910
Abstract: A clipboard assembly which can be used in all weather conditions provides a box-like inclement weather five-sided protective cover configuration for protecting writing media held by the board's clip, and a compact and generally planar collapsed configuration for use during good weather and indoors, and also for storage. When the all-weather clipboard assembly is in the inclement weather configuration, a top planar member covers the writing media from above, and one side of the protective cover is left open to provide access to any writing materials engaged by the clip. When the clipboard assembly is in the collapsed, good weather position, a pair of opposed walls of the protective cover fold under the top planar member, and an end wall folds down to form a new planar writing surface comprised of the top surface of the planar cover member and the outer surface of the end wall.
