  • Patent number: 6592151
Abstract: A coupling assembly for connecting two members is provided that includes a first “male” member and a second “female” member. The first member includes a release sleeve moveably mounted thereon having a rigid release portion and a flexible sealing portion. The second member comprises at least one of an integral coupling member integrated into an apparatus, such as a pump, and an independent coupling member. Upon connection of the first and second members, the flexible sealing portion sealingly engages a mating surface on the second member to substantially inhibit the entry of contamination into an area between the first and second members when connected. The present invention provides an improved release sleeve that releases the male member from both an independent female member and an integral female member.

  • Patent number: 6554323
Abstract: A socketless fitting for releasable connection of a pressurized line. The fitting has a housing body with a receiving opening to insert one end of the line, and an inner sleeve attached in the housing body in an arrangement that extends coaxially within the receiving opening for engagement into the inserted line end. The inner sleeve is fastened in the housing body media-tight around the periphery by a connector and preferably engages in the line media-tight around the periphery. A clamping element axially movable in the receiving opening cooperates with an inner surface of the housing body to secure the line end onto the inner sleeve. Media-tight outward sealing is accomplished by sealing engagement of the essentially rigidly secured inner sleeve in the line, because the inner sleeve itself is also tightly joined to the housing body.

  • Publication number: 20030034647
Abstract: A pipe coupler includes a gripping element adapted to engage an outer surface of a pipe end to oppose a pull-out force on the pipe end, and a torque drive mechanism which rotates the gripping element to induce longitudinal movement of the gripping element along the pipe end in an opposite direction. The gripping element may take the form of a collet having a threaded inner surface, and the torque drive mechanism incorporated in a back-up ring that surrounds the collet. The torque drive mechanism may be provided by an inwardly extending, longitudinal flange which is stamped out of the metallic back-up ring, and which engages a longitudinal notch in the collet. This design allows the intentional removal of the coupler at any time that the coupling is not under a large axial load.

Abstract: A coupling assembly for connecting two members is provided that includes a first “male” member and a second “female” member. The second member is integrated into an apparatus, such as a pump, and includes a duct therethrough for receiving the first member. Upon connection of the first and second members, the flexible sealing portion sealingly engages a recessed seat portion of the second member to substantially inhibit the ingression of contaminates into the duct when the first and second members are connected. The foregoing coupling assembly is advantageous because it allows the second member to be formed directly into an apparatus. In other embodiments, the coupling assembly provides an improved release sleeve that releases the male member from both a conventional female member and an integral female member.

  • Patent number: 6454314
Abstract: An elastomeric seal seals a pipe which is held in a push-in part of a plug-in coupling relative to a cylindrical interior surface of a housing of the plug-in coupling, into which the push-in part is pushed together with the pipe. The seal is in prestressed contact with the interior surface of the housing via an outward-facing annular lip and with the pipe via a radially inward-facing annular lip. The elastomeric seal is connectable by positive fitting to the push-in part, this positive fit being lockable by the assembly of the pipe to form a non-releasable connection, the pipe having a cylindrical and uninterrupted exterior circumference in the region of the seal. The joint between the seal and the push-in part is simple to assemble and is lockable by the insertion of the pipe. The connection of the seal to the push-in part may be additionally secured, with certain changes of diameter, by compression of the web-shaped connection between them.

  • Patent number: 6390511
Abstract: A quick connect coupling generally comprises a housing having an axial bore extending inwardly from an entrance and increasing in diameter moving into the housing. A tube has a tube bead of increased diameter spaced from an inner end of the tube and is insertable into the bore. A generally annular radially expandable collet disposed within the bore expands upon insertion of the tube and contracts onto the tube outwardly of the tube bead. The collet functions as a wedge between the tube bead and the increasing diameter portion of the housing, thereby retaining the tube within the housing. In one embodiment, a spring disposed within the housing biases the collet toward the entrance of the housing, ensuring proper position of the collet in extreme conditions. The inventive collet allows smaller tube bead diameters to be used.

Abstract: A conduit coupling having a body with an axially extending bore formed therethrough from a first end to a second end. The bore is defined by an inner wall including a frusto-conical surface converging toward the body first end. A radially constrictible and generally annular retaining collet is positioned in the bore. The collet includes an outer frusto-conical surface mating with the frusto-conical surface defined by the inner wall and is axially movable relative thereto. The collet has an inner toothed surface defining a collet inner diameter and at least two radially inwardly extending bite-teeth defining therebetween a distance less than the collet inner diameter and less than an outer diameter of a conduit inserted into the bore so that the bite-teeth engage an outer surface of the conduit. In this manner, upon axial outward movement of the conduit, the frusto-conical surface of the collet bears against the frusto-conical surface of the body inner wall to radially constrict the collet.

Abstract: A tubular glove or insert having a front ring relief at one end and at an opposite end, an external ring relief. In an internal edge of the external ring relief are located two internal ring rows of teeth. A polyhedric tool is used to form a plurality of V-shaped cuttings or notches at equal distances in the internal surfaces of the external ring relief. The cuttings are then submitted to a further cutting or milling operation to form longitudinal slots centered at a vertex of the V-shaped notches at the back extremity of the V-shaped notches near the front ring relief so that the glove can be inserted into a connection body. This process allows the manufacturing of connection gloves (inserts) with a reduction in length and consequent reduction of material used and equipment used, as well as specialized manpower, while strengthening the grasping surface of the glove on a tube.

  • Patent number: 5887911
Abstract: A quick connect coupling having a self-contained releasable collet generally comprises a housing having an axial bore extending inwardly from an entrance. The axial bore includes a large diameter portion adjacent the entrance. A tube having a bead of relatively large diameter is insertable into the bore. A generally annular radially expandable collet disposed within the bore of the housing expands upon insertion of the tube into the housing and contracts onto the tube between the bead and the housing, thereby retaining the tube within the housing. The tube is selectably releasable from the housing by an annular pilot disposed within the housing having an inclined surface complementary to an inclined surface on the collet. Release members are provided to facilitate axial inward movement of the collet into the housing. The collet then rides up the inclined surface of the pilot, thereby radially expanding the collet and releasing the tube from the housing.

  • Patent number: 5865996
Abstract: A water purifier includes a port having a collet, an O-ring seal, and a support between the collet and the seal. The collet axially receives a tube for water passage. The support limits radial movement of the tube off the axis. The support has an L-shaped cross section having a radial leg that seats the O-ring, and an axial leg. Water purifiers are often installed in confined spaces near mechanical equipment. Conventional water purifiers installed with sharp bends in influent and effluent water tubes and exposed to equipment vibration conducted by the tubes often exhibit weeping at the port. In an embodiment of the present invention, weeping is eliminated by maintaining axial relation between the tube, the seal, and the collet.
