A space delimited by the container and the rotor area between a surface of the rotor area and that surface of the container facing the rotor area is filled at least partially with strengthening and/or smoothing elements. A relative movement is generated between the surface of the rotor area and the strengthening and/or smoothing elements. The surface region of the rotor area to be strengthened and/or smoothed is at a distance from the surface of the container facing the rotor area.

Abstract: A manufacturing method for providing a low-friction surface comprises providing (210) of a mechanical element. A tool is mechanically rubbed (212) against a surface of the mechanical element. A process liquid is provided (214) to a contact area between the mechanical element and the tool. The process liquid comprises a first element that is a refractory metal and a second element that is a chalcogen. The first and second elements are provided in a liquid substance. The mechanical rubbing is performed with a contact pressure that is between 1% and 100% of an ultimate strength of the mechanical element. The mechanical rubbing thereby causes a combined burnishing of the surface of the mechanical element and a deposition of a tribofilm on the surface of the mechanical element. The tribofilm comprises the first element and the second element.

Abstract: A fatigue resistant turbine through bolt formed from a base material covered by a first surface modification and a second surface modification is disclosed. The first surface modification may be in contact with the base material and, in at least one embodiment, may be a low plasticity burnished layer that increases the residual compressive stresses on an outer surface of the turbine through bolt. The second surface modification may cover the first surface modification and, in at least one embodiment, may be a spinel oxide layer on the low plasticity burnished layer. The second surface modification may be positioned on the first surface modification or on the bare turbine through bolt contact surface without low plastiocity burnishing on the shaft of the turbine through bolt. The first and second surface modifications reduce the likelihood of fretting fatigue failures.
