  • Patent number: 6526639
Abstract: The disk burnishing process is conducted with a contact flying burnishing head wherein the leading edge of the burnishing head is disposed above the surface of the disk, while the trailing edge of the burnishing head makes contact with the surface of the disk. The contact flying configuration of the burnishing head is obtained by controlling the rotating disk RPM in conjunction with the burnishing head design characteristics. In the contact flying burnishing process, the burnishing edges of the several burnishing pads of the head are disposed at different heights relative to the disk surface, such that the leading burnishing pad edges are higher than the trailing burnishing pad edges. In this configuration, high asperities are trimmed by the burnishing pads while low asperities are not. Thus, a disk is properly burnished for subsequent hard disk drive performance with a minimum of surface debris being created by the burnishing process.

  • Patent number: 6497022
Abstract: The pipe end burnishing tool has a tool shank with an axis of rotation, a first end adapted to be clamped to drill chuck, a second end, and a stop surface on the second end. A cup member is driven by the tool shank and axially moveable along the axis of rotation. An inside member is also driven by the shank and axially movable along the axis of rotation. A cup spring urges the cup toward the stop surface. An inside member spring urges the inside member away from the first end and also urges the cup member toward the first end. Conical burnishing surfaces on the cup and the inside member cooperate to burnish pipe ends. These burnishing surfaces float in line with the ends of pipes.

  • Patent number: 6405419
Abstract: An arrangement for exercising (or burnishing) the intake and exhaust valves in the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine employs a plurality of out-of-phase eccentric cams coupled to a source of rotatory motion. The eccentric cams engage with respective linear drive arrangements that are urged into out-of-phase reciprocation with respect to each other. The linear drives urge the valves into repeated open and closed states where, in combination with valve rotators, burnishing of the sealing portion of the valves with the valves seats to improve the seal therebetween is effected. The use of eccentric cams to effect linear reciprocating motion achieves control over both directions of movement of the linear drive arrangements. The cylinder head is maintained in fixed relation to the linear drive arrangements by a hydraulic, pneumatic, or other form of ram, the ram also creating a test chamber.

Abstract: A burnishing apparatus is provided for burnishing a surface of a material. The burnishing apparatus includes a guide member having an annular groove which is eccentric to the rotating axis of the guide member. The rolling element has a radius r, an effective rolling radius on the guide member r1, and an effective rolling radius r2 on the surface of the material, and r=r2 and r1<r2. Due to the combined effects of an eccentric groove and r1<r2, a variable track is left on the surface of the material as the rolling element rolls along the groove and on the surface of the material. The variable track repeats after the rolling element revolves around the surface of the material N revolutions. The burnishing apparatus may further include an actuator which drives a top cover onto the material to force the surface of the material on the rolling element. The array of channels span a band in which an asperity may be present, and the sharp edges shear off the asperities within the band which extend above the chosen submicroinch height, with the separated particulates being passed through the recesses and channel system to the outer edge of the honing head. The trailing edges act to shear off the unwanted heights of the asperities, while the recesses enable pressure differentials and air flows to direct the separated particulates outwardly relative to the disc, centripetal forces of rotation bearing the particulates from the disc.
