Abstract: According to one embodiment, a pattern formed through light exposure is observed under two or more different optical conditions, and a focus shift and exposure amount in the light exposure are estimated based on a brightness value of the pattern under each of the optical conditions.
Abstract: A method includes shrink fitting a ring member about a railroad wheel body and metallurically bonding the ring member to the railroad wheel body. A wheel assembly includes an inner portion obtained from a worn railroad wheel, a ring member disposed about the inner portion, and suitable electroplating material disposed on at least one of the faying surfaces. The wheel assembly may be heated under suitable conditions to provide diffusion bonding across interfacing faying surfaces to produce an integral wheel structure. Appropriate quenching, tempering, and finishing processes may be utilized to obtain desired properties. An article formed thereby includes an inner body portion obtained from a worn railroad wheel and a metallurically bonded outer circumferential portion. The outer portion may comprise a composition selected for desired wear characteristics.
Abstract: A wheel assembly for a wheeled vehicle utilizes interchangeable wheel hubs to secure various types of tires to provide better performance and maintenance on the vehicles. The design of the hubs is such that fabrication costs are reduced as well as costs for maintaining wheel inventories. The hubs are designed with locking elements and shoulders to ensure that tires are effectively secured in the wheel assembly. The hub is configured so that replacement of worn tires is done quickly, without having to touch the wheel bearings or drain the lubricant.

Abstract: A railroad wheel formed from at least two metallic alloys. In one embodiment, a railroad wheel has a body formed from a first alloy and a rim formed from a second alloy initially in powder form. In an exemplary embodiment, to form the dual alloy wheel the body of the wheel is cast with a circumferential channel formed therein. The perimeter of the body is enveloped with a material, such as sheet metal, to form a cavity defined by the channel and the sheet metal. The second alloy in the form of a powder is placed in the cavity and subjected to heat and pressure to metallurgically weld the first and second alloys and form a composite railroad wheel.
Abstract: A disc wheel, particularly for rail vehicles, with a composite metal/plastic structure. In order to make possible simple manufacture with at the same time adequate force transmission, a structure between the hub and the tread comprises a plastic structure comprising two half shells of the same design which are subdivided in sector fashion by spoke-like reinforcement ribs. The reinforcement ribs each have a longitudinal slot into which rib plates are inserted which connect the two half shells to each other. Advantageously, plastic foam is inserted into the cavities of the half shells. All joints between the plastic structure and the hub or the tread are cemented joints.

Abstract: A wheel for rail vehicles with at least one disc which is connected to an axle, and with a wheel rim having a tread or surface surrounding the disc, while the rail tread in engagement with the rim tread results in contacting points of the wheel during straight forward drive of the vehicle located on the tread or track of the rails. At least within that region of the rim which contains the above mentioned rail contacting points of the wheel rim the wheel rim is turnably connected to the disc for turning about an imaginary axis located in about the driving direction of the wheel.

Abstract: A vibration damping assembly for a wheel or the like that undergoes rotation is achieved by providing an annular groove in a surface of the wheel coaxial with the wheel axis. An annular metal ring formed from a channel member generally U-shaped in cross-section is positioned with one of its legs within the annular groove substantially encased therein by a vibration damping material. The remainder of the channel member extends close to areas of the wheel that are adjacent to the groove, and vibration damping material is sandwiched between the wheel and the channel member. Vibration damping material subject to shear deformation during rotation of the wheel is used, along with vibration damping material subject to deformation in tension and compression.

Abstract: An axle and wheel assembly particularly adapted for railcar usage is disclosed as having a metal-foam construction that is light in weight but of a relatively high strength. The axle includes an elongated hollow steel outer axle member and an elongated hollow steel inner axle member received within the outer axle member with the foam injected therebetween so as to cure and bond to the members and function as a load bearing element therebetween. Adhesion between the axle members and the foam is increased by applying an adhesive to the members prior to the injection of the foam. An intermediate portion of the outer axle member between ends of the axle includes outwardly deformed ribs that increase the cross-sectional area thereof without increasing the weight to enhance the lightweight and high strength characteristics of the axle.
Abstract: The present noise damping apparatus is especially intended for damping the noise caused by wheels running on rails. For this purpose there is provided a noise screen connected to at least one surface of the rail wheel in a force transmitting, yet removable manner. The noise screen comprises vibration damping reed members. This screen prevents noise generated by the wheel proper from radiating outwardly and it also acts as a noise absorber for the impact noise propagating in the wheel and other solid bodies.
