Publication number: 20080271327Abstract: A powered saw 1 includes a frame 3 with a continuous loop blade 5 positioned in a coplanar relationship with the frame 3 along a system of blade guides 7 so that a cutting surface 9 of the blade 5 faces a desired cutting area. The relative positions between the frame arms 13, the frame handle 2, and the blade 5 provides a degree of stability and control that allows the operator to precisely and accurately control the cutting surface 9 of the blade 5 along curves, notches, and protrusions, including those involved in coping. In addition, this arrangement results in a compact design that positions the cutting surface 9 in close proximity to the handle 2.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 5, 2005Publication date: November 6, 2008Inventor: Joseph P. Patent number: 6736037Abstract: A coping saw is provided having two spaced-apart rotary actuators supported by a frame. Two saw-blade sections extend between the two rotary actuators and are intended to singularly engage a work piece. The saw is adapted to contain a drive mechanism which is coupled to a first of the two rotary actuators for causing the saw-blade sections to move in at least one direction. At least one guide roller assembly is disposed each of the two saw-blade sections for providing stability and retaining said two-saw blade sections between said two rotary actuators.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2001Date of Patent: May 18, 2004Inventor: Ethan Dean

Patent number: 6216350Abstract: A thin saw blade with four cutting surfaces of fixed lengths in line, each cutting surface rotated with respect to the preceding cutting surface to enable a user to change cutting directions of the blade without rotating the material to be cut. A second embodiment uses a blade with two cutting surfaces of fixed length with cutting surfaces on opposed edges of the blade requiring only a single twist and enabling cutting of thicker pieces of material with longer strokes. A preferred embodiment uses the blade in a coping saw with each rotation being 90 degrees enabling rapid smooth cuts of thin materials for handicraft projects. Rubber O-rings secure the blade in anchor bolt slots to secure the blade while cutting in different directions. The blade could also be used in electric sabre saws or bench jig saws which would require adjustment of the work support surface to change cutting directions.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2000Date of Patent: April 17, 2001Inventor: Norbert Kirk

Patent number: 5873170Abstract: A saw is described as having an adjustable handle wherein the angle of the handle in relation to the longitudinal axis of the saw blade and blade holder is rotatably adjustable.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1996Date of Patent: February 23, 1999Inventor: John Stanley

Patent number: 5678315Abstract: An open-ended handle is disclosed for use with framed saws, such as coping saws. The open-ended handle is generally J-shaped and has a grip member that is perpendicular to the saw blade. The open-ended handle is mounted to the saw such that the grip member is also symmetrical about the mounting point. The present invention provides an arrangement in which the hand-grip portion of the handle is symmetrical about a longitudinal axis of motion when the saw is in use to allow the greatest amount of power to be transferred to the saw blade along a single line of force which not only provides for accurate cutting, but also eases tension on the user's hand and wrist to reduce fatigue. This arrangement provides a saw that is equally balanced and usable in both an upright position and an inverted position for accurate and easy cutting in a downward direction as well as an upward direction.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 1996Date of Patent: October 21, 1997Inventor: Mark D. Hartzell

Patent number: 5555627Abstract: The present invention provides a symmetric, D-shaped handle for use with coping and similar saws which are generally comprised of a saw blade attached to a U-shaped frame having first and second shanks. The handle is comprised of a perpendicular cross-member mounted between the two shanks of a C-shaped member. The cross-member, which is used for gripping, is maintained substantially perpendicular to the saw blade while the planes of the saw frame shanks remain substantially parallel to the cross-member. At the center point of the C-shaped member is an aperture to allow the D-shaped handle to slide onto the threaded shaft of a standard blade holder. A standard fastener such as a wing nut may then be threadingly engaged with the shaft to attach and tighten the handle onto the shaft and simultaneously tension and align the saw blade between the shanks of the saw frame.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1995Date of Patent: September 17, 1996Inventor: Mark Hartzell

Patent number: 5388334Abstract: A mechanized coping saw has a frame and handle attached thereto, the frame including a U-shaped portion with opposite leg sections having outward ends, a cavity formed within the U-shaped portion, and apertures proximate the outward ends of the leg sections which open into the cavity. An endless blade travels through the cavity of the U-shaped portion around rotating elements with a portion of the blade extending straight between the leg sections to define an exposed blade cutting section, A power drive system drives the blade through the cavity. The invention uses a pair of guide rollers which are placed along the profiled edge of a molding piece to steadily guide the blade cutting section for precise coping of the molding piece. The rollers are adjustable to provide for a variety of different cutting angles and situations.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 1994Date of Patent: February 14, 1995Inventor: Thomas J. Halsey
