Abstract: A control circuit for operating a lamp or other electrically operated device using a conventional wall socket outlet that is selectively energized under the control of a conventional wall mounted switch. To permit the lamp to be independently controlled using either the wall switch or the lamp switch, a wall adapter unit is employed that plugs into the wall outlet and into which the lamp's power cord is plugged. Sensing means are employed to detect the operation of either the wall switch or the lamp switch to control an electrically operated switch which turns the lamp ON and OFF whenever either the wall switch or the lamp switch are operated. Different embodiments are provided for use with conventional electrical wiring and with either a conventional lamp or lamp incorporating additional circuitry to adapt it for use with the wall socket adapter.

Abstract: The switching apparatus is intended to be used with a segment of an electric power line having several phase lines. Each of the phase lines has several conductors electrically insulated one from the other and connected in parallel. The conductors of each phase line are short-circuited among them at two extremities of the segment. The apparatus comprises pairs of switches connected in parallel, for selectively opening and closing the conductors of each phase line, a detecting device for detecting current operating conditions of the segment, and a controlling device for controlling the pairs of switches according to the current operating conditions of the segment. The present invention also relates to a switching method.

  • Patent number: 6396166
Abstract: The present invention relates to a data protective receptacle with the power saving function to accomplish the power saving by getting a sub-receptacle to be automatically controlled so that it may be on or off by a main receptacle. Since this invention can get the power for driving peripheral appliances automatically to be off when the main power for the computer system gets to be off, it can reduce the consumption current thereof while it stands by. Also, this invention gets both alternating-current (AC) power lines to be off when the main system gets to be off, and thereby, it can cut off any leaking current flowing between one power line and the ground line so that the power consumption may be reduced while the system stands by.

Abstract: A touch switch apparatus for detecting the presence of an object such as a human appendage, the apparatus having a touch pad and a local control circuit connected to the touch pad and to a controlled device. The touch pad preferable includes a first electrode and a second electrode spaced from and surrounding the first electrode. The control circuit is preferably in integrated circuit form. A signal is provided to the touch pad to generate an electric field thereabout. Introduction of a stimulus near the touch pad disturbs the electric field. The control circuit detects the electric field disturbance in and generates a control signal in response.

  • Patent number: 6388343
Abstract: A leak current is prevented from flowing during a power off state in a power supply unit having a remote power on/off function by using the momentary switch. In a state of power off, i.e. a state in which a switch SW2 is turned off, power is not applied to a latch circuit 30, and hence power is not consumed. A switch drive circuit 40 does not consume power. When a user depresses a momentary switch SW1 during a state that the switch SW2 is turned off, the switch drive circuit 40 turns the switch SW2 on. As a result, the latch circuit 30 can receive a drive voltage VCC from a node located down stream of the switch SW2, so that it can store or latch the turn on state of the momentary switch SW1. After that, when the user releases the momentary switch SW1, it returns to an original position and operation of the switch drive circuit 40 which turns the switch SW2 on is terminated.

  • Patent number: 6388574
Abstract: An optical intrusion detection system includes an electromagnetic radiation detector located within the chassis of a personal computer or the like. The EM detector, such as a photodiode or phototransistor, detects EM radiation when the chassis is opened (allowing a person to modify or remove the contents thereof). The EM detector sends a detection signal to a latching mechanism that latches the signal and maintains the signal even after the chassis is closed. A detection component is provided which supplies the detection signal as a data signal to a network administrator terminal coupled to the personal computer where the optical intrusion detection system is installed. A feature of the detection system of the present invention is that intrusion into the chassis is detected silently and without alerting the individual opening the chassis.

  • Patent number: 6369465
Abstract: Systems and methods for diagnosing and treating tissue transmit an electrical energy pulse that temporarily stuns a zone of tissue, temporarily rendering it electrically unresponsive. The systems and methods sense an electrophysiological effect due to the transmitted pulse. The systems and methods alter an electrophysiological property of tissue in or near the zone based, at least in part, upon the sensed electrophysiological effect. The alteration of the electrophysiological property can be accomplished, for example, by tissue ablation or by the administration of medication. In a preferred implementation, radio frequency energy is used to both temporarily stun tissue and to ablate tissue through a common electrode.
