The system further includes means for sensing the position of the rotor and means for selectively configuring the first, second and third windings of the stator in a wye connection when the speed of the motor is less than a predetermined value and configuring the windings in a delta connection when the speed of the motor is greater than the predetermined value.

    Abstract: In a first type of variable speed electric motor, two coaxial shafts are mounted in a housing. Two rotors are mounted on each shaft. Two stators are mounted in the housing. Each of the stators is in operative association with a rotor mounted on a different one of the shafts. The remaining two rotors are in operative association with each other and form a converter motor. In the second type of variable speed electric motor, two parallel shafts are mounted in a housing. A support is mounted for rotation around the first shaft. Two rotors are mounted on the first shaft. A stator is mounted in the housing in operative association with one of the rotors mounted on the first shaft. A third rotor is mounted on the support in operative association with the other rotor mounted on the first shaft. The support is geared to the first shaft through idler gears mounted on the second shaft.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a starter-generator machine (10) for starting turbine type aircraft engines. The machine combines an induction motor with a synchronous samarium cobalt generator. In the machine, a rotor-shaped stator (22) is fixed and positioned inside a squirrel-cage induction rotor (18) which has an array of samarium-cobalt magnets (24) attached on the outer diameter thereof. The compound dual machine operates as a starter by using the induction rotor to accelerate the permanent magnet rotor, and thus the aircraft engine via a drive pinion (34), up to some low synchronous speed, when ac power is applied to the outside stator (16) to lock in the permanent-magnet rotor (24) synchronously with the rotating field created in the stator (16) of the synchronous generator. As the speed of the rotor (24) is then increased, the engine speed is also increased via the drive pinion (34).In a second embodiment, a cartridge type induction-motor (70) is utilized to initially start an aircraft engine.

    Abstract: A submersible motor comprising a first housing including a motor and a second housing enclosing electrical connections between the motor and a jacketed electrical cord to the second housing. The first housing has a cavity therein in the periphery thereof. A body of compressible resilient elastomeric material is positioned in the cavity and has an exterior configuration and dimensions which conform generally with the configuration and dimensions of the cavity. The body has a plurality of generally axial passages therein through which the magnet wires from the motor extend. The wires have a diameter so that they can be readily inserted through the passages in the body. The second housing has an annular wall extending axially through the open end of the cavity in the first housing and operable, when the second housing is in mounted position on the first housing, to compress the body radially into tight conformity with the wires from the motor.

    Abstract: A system for generating alternating current of selected voltage at a target frequency includes a plurality of A.C. generators, at least one of which has a rotatably mounted stator. A prime mover drives a power input shaft at speeds extending through a wide range and the shaft is connected to the first rotor. As speed increases, the generator reaches the desired frequency and a sensing device releases the stator to rotate and maintain a relative speed between itself and the rotor corresponding to the target frequency. The stator drives the second rotor at its own absolute speed which is the difference between the power input shaft speed and the relative speed between the first stator and rotor. A field control maintains the desired voltage and a load control transmits the current output to a load and varies the load to maintain the generator at proper operating condition.
