Mechanical Shields Or Protectors Patents (Class 310/85)
  • Patent number: 6703733
Abstract: A multi-pole electric machine rotor assembly includes a rotor forging including a rotor body having poles 13 with pole faces and a winding module including a plurality of field windings positioned adjacent the pole faces and winding insulators disposed between each successive pair of the field windings, respectively. A winding block, disposed in engagement with the winding module, is shaped to be shifted to a final position relative to the winding module when the rotor assembly rotates at about its rated speed to thereby compress the winding module. Either the winding block or the winding module can be displaced by centrifugal forces during rotation. In the final position, the winding block is locked by friction in a position to maintain compression in the winding module. The winding block serves to provide a pre-stress in the field windings to keep the field windings tight over the design range of spin speeds, thereby controlling winding position and reducing alternating radial movement.

Abstract: The invention relates to a spindle motor having a sealing support film which prevents exchange of air between the interior and surroundings of the spindle motor. In spindle motors for hard disk drives it is extremely important to construct the spindle motor so that it is sealed tight against the external environment, ie so that from the connecting side of the spindle motor no admission of air to the interior of the spindle motor can occur. A further characteristic of the invention consists in that the support film is bonded and fixed in place in sealing manner by means of an adhesive which does not give off gas or does so only very slightly.

  • Patent number: 6091173
Abstract: An electromechanical machine includes a stator fixed with respect to a housing structure and a rotor fixed with respect to a shaft. The shaft is rotatably supported by a pair of bearing assemblies maintained in the housing structure. A pair of coilheads extend from respective sides of the stator core axially external of the rotor. Shaft shields, preferably configured as tubular members, radially interpose the shaft and the respective coilhead. The shaft shields may be constructed of a magnetically permeable material to divert flux that would otherwise cut through the shaft. As a result, errant currents that could be induced in the shaft by such flux are desirably reduced.

  • Patent number: 5796197
Abstract: An oil-filled, submersible electric motor which contains features designed to prevent both the ingress of well fluid into the motor interior, and the leakage of fluid from the motor interior. The motor contains a liquid-filled top chamber, above the motor's stator and rotor. This top chamber connects, via a tube, with a pressure-relief chamber at the bottom of the motor so that any liquid which migrates into the top of the motor is channeled away from the stator and rotor. The relief chamber also serves as a reservoir to replace any liquid which seeps out of the top chamber. The motor also incorporates a pressure-equalization chamber, beneath the stator and rotor, to accommodate thermal expansion of the dielectric fluid in the motor interior. A bladder in the equalization chamber expands and contracts to keep the motor interior and the well fluid in pressure equilibrium.

  • Patent number: 5763973
Abstract: A composite barrier can and method of making same for use with industrial magnetic drive pumps. The barrier can is used to prevent leakage between the inner magnet assembly attached to the pump and the outer magnet assembly attached to the pump drive or motor. The barrier can is a non-metallic, composite barrier can composed of fiber and resin and includes a pole piece. The nonmetallic material and high strength configuration of the composite barrier can permits pump operation at high speeds and pressures with negligible eddy current generation. Using the composite barrier can results in minimizing heat developed in the coupling area and minimizing horsepower required from the motor. A resistance temperature detector is operatively positioned on the exterior of or within the fiber layer of the can such that the sensing portion of the detector is located proximate the closed end of the can. A method of manufacturing the barrier can is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5723925
Abstract: A solenoid coil generates a magnetic field within its bore when an electrical current is made to flow therethrough. A disc type rotor carrying thereon an armature coil is arranged in the bore along with a superconductor shield partly covering the disc type rotor. The magnetic field generated by the solenoid coil cannot pass through the superconductor shield and therefore detours around it and passes through an area devoid of the superconductor shield. The superconductor shield is also used to direct the electrical current flowing through the portions of the armature coil not covered by the superconductor shield, either from the periphery toward the center of the disc type rotor or conversely from the center toward the periphery thereof. With this arrangement, the Lorentz force applied to the radial electrical current is made to become a one-directional rotary force that drives the disc type rotor to rotate.
