Abstract: A wiggler that, when used in a free electron laser, reduces the harmonicity of the light emitted from the free electron laser. In general, the reduced harmonicity is accomplished by making the magnetic field distribution of the wiggler to be sinusoidal, rather than like a square wave. The sinusoidal magnetic field distribution reduces the number of harmonics that can be used to approximate the magnetic field distribution of the wiggler, and thus reduces the harmonicity of the light produced by passing an electron beam through the wiggler. In a particular embodiment, the wiggler is composed of pieces or segments of permanent magnets that are arranged along an axis such that their magnetic orientations are perpendicular to the axis, and such that the magnetic field distribution along the axis is sinusoidal.

The presence of low dielectric constant air between the interfitted walls prevents the occurrence of corona currents between the two focusing terminal pins of a double focus tube and between a focusing terminal pin and a surrounding insulating resin wall. As necessary, insulating walls that also have at least a double-wall construction are formed as the side walls of focusing terminal pin housings that separate the focusing terminal pins from the outside. A gap of at least 1.0 mm is left between the ends of the focusing terminal pins and the side walls and bottoms of focusing terminal pin housings in the base portion.

Abstract: The invention provides a circuit for controlling a cathode ray tube. The circuit comprises a source of input colour signals (Uin(R), Uin(G), Uin(B)) for the primary colours of the cathode ray tube. Output amplifiers are coupled to the source of colour input signals and to electron guns of the cathode ray tube. Finally, limiting means are provided to limit the colour input signals to a predetermined threshold value. In this way the output amplifiers are prevented from saturation and undesirable smears do not appear on the screen. In an advantageous embodiment the limiting means are realized by a diode biased in reverse direction.

When outputting signal levels of each of the color components of video signals, color mixing is performed in which the output signal level is the sum of products of all of the color component levels that have been received as input multiplied by coefficients. Abstract: Apparatus and method are provided for using a multi-element field emission cathode in a color cathode ray tube. The field emission cathode may have from four to ten field emission arrays linearly arranged. The arrays are preferably formed from carbon-based material. An electron gun assembly focuses electron beams from each array on to a phosphor stripe or dot on the screen of the cathode ray tube. Deflection apparatus moves the beam from each field emission array according to clock signals. Clock signals also turn on or turn off voltage to contacts controlling electron current from the array. Values of voltage applied, determined by a video signal, determine the intensity of electron current from each array, which controls the intensity of the light emitted by each color stripe or dot of phosphor on the phosphor screen.

Abstract: A frame synchronizer disposed in a multiple-gun type cathode ray tube relatively delays outputting an image signal for one of split screens with respect to an image signal for the other split region. Thereby, a relative difference in scanning time of electron beams which scans the split screens is generated so that the sum of beam currents applied to a phosphor in the same pixel position per unit time does not exceed a limit of intensity saturation of the phosphor. Therefore, in a scanning mode that field (frame) scanning is carried out on the split screens on the right and the left sides in a direction opposite to each other, a intensity drop resulting from intensity saturation of the phosphor can be avoided, and a proper image can be displayed.

A video signal modulation circuit (10) modulates a video signal (9) (first video signal) into a second video signal having a signal level in an area of low gradation level lower than a signal level of the first video signal. A cathode bias voltage source (7) generates a driving voltage on the basis of the second video signal. It is therefore possible to keep the driving voltage in the area of low gradation level low and reduce brightness in the area of low gradation level of a CRT (1). Abstract: A method of mounting a signal outputting electrode for outputting an electric signal generated in an envelope of a cathode ray tube to the outside without being adversely influenced by a getter. A signal outputting electrode is mounted in an area which is not covered with an internal conductive film in a state where the periphery of the electrode is apart from an inner wall of a funnel via an intermediate member. When a getter is introduced into the tube in the state where the signal outputting electrode is mounted, the getter is prevented from reaching the intermediate member. It therefore prevents conduction between the signal outputting electrode and the inner conductive film.

  • Patent number: 6150760
Abstract: An implosion protection-enhanced cathode ray tube (CRT) includes an evacuated envelope structured from a display panel section, a neck, and a funnel section. The CRT comes with a reinforcing metal band for implosion protection clamped by thermal shrink-fit methods around the outer periphery of the panel. This implosion-protective band may be a metal strip of generally rectangular closed-loop shape. The strip is machined to have bent walls so that it resembles in shape an open-roof dome as a whole. Preferably, the band has its one edge as folded back or "curled" defining a "flip." Upon attachment to the display panel, the band is placed so that the "peak" of each bulged wall is offset in position from a mold match line of the panel toward the CRT neck. With such "band preoffset" feature, the implosion-protective band offers increased locking or clamping forces against the panel thus enhancing the CRT implosion protecting ability.
