Abstract: An electronic ruler has a generally rectangular-solid shape defining a length, width, and thickness. A straight edge exists along the length as do distance markings in at least one unit of measurement. A user input interface 1) receives user inputs of measurement in a format corresponding to the unit of measurement, and/or 2) shows a measurement made automatically by the ruler. A plurality of visual indicators, such as fiber optics, LEDs, etc., extend along the length and light in an amount corresponding to the user inputs or the measurement made. In this manner, basic rulers for school-aged children provide measurement capability in the absence of sufficient gradations. It also gives feedback regarding correctness to stimulate learning in adolescent students. An optical array also serves to transmit/receive light to automatically take the measurements upon indications from a user. A processor connects to the indicators and array for controlling lighting.

The first line of the first set of rulings is spaced from the first edge of the ruler by a different interval from the interval by which the last line of that set of rulings is spaced from the third edge of the ruler, and the distance of each line of the first set of rulings from the first edge and of each line of the second set of rulings from the second edge is marked so as to be visible when the first and second edges of the ruler are in use and the distance of each line of the first set of rulings from the third edge and of each line of the second set of rulings from the fourth edge is marked so as to be visible when the third and fourth edges of the ruler are in use.

Abstract: A beam scale for measurement of body weight and height according to the present invention includes a frame and a weighing mechanism. The frame includes a base assembly, a pillar assembly, and a horn assembly. The weighing mechanism is housed within the frame and includes a beam, weights, and a lever assembly. The horn assembly may include a transparent holding bracket having a level indicator. The scale may include a height measurement assembly having a height rod, a sheath supported by the horn assembly and the pillar assembly, a measuring arm, and a transparent height-measuring window having a line indicator. The frame may include a quick assembly mechanism to secure the pillar assembly to the base assembly during final assembly, quiet wheels for transport, and/or handle bars to support the user. Much of the frame may be made of pigmented thermoplastic or thermoset materials to reduce manufacturing costs and scale weight.

  • Patent number: 6851196
Abstract: A ruler that is to be used for cutting sheets of material perpendicular to its longitudinal edges. The ruler is a longitudinal piece of rigid material that increases in thickness from one edge to the other. A cutting groove is placed into the rigid material at a thickened edge so as to aid the direction of a sharpened instrument passing through the groove while cutting the material. A hardened insert may be inserted into the groove to prevent the edges of the groove being damaged by the sharp cutting instrument. One end of the ruler has an extension of eyelet molded thereon and the other end of the ruler has a depression molded into an under surface of the ruler. Both the eyelet and the depression have a matching configuration to snap-fit into each other to thereby connect two rulers together in a rigid manner.

  • Patent number: 6843279
Abstract: A pipe insulation assembly includes a length of tubular insulation with a longitudinally extending slit so that the tubular insulation can be passed over and mounted on a length of pipe and a jacket overlaying the outer surface of the tubular insulation. To facilitate the installation of the pipe insulation assembly, a ruler, which is associated with the jacket and, preferably, no longer visible when the pipe insulation is mounted on a pipe, extends for the length of the jacket and is located adjacent the slit in the tubular insulation. The ruler has units of linear measurement marked thereon for measuring the pipe insulation assembly in the direction of the length of the pipe insulation assembly.

  • Patent number: 6782629
Abstract: A guiding device wherein an illustrated embodiment of the guiding device includes an elongated finger-resting surface, an elongated upstanding section, and an elongated first scale-supporting section. The upstanding section is positioned between the first scale-supporting section and the finger-resting section. The first scale is an elongated, narrow strip having a first scale surface rigidly and unreleasably attached to the first scale-supporting section of the second portion. The first scale has a second scale surface opposite to the first scale surface. The second scale surface has first indicia to indicate predetermined lengths along the first scale. The finger-resting surface permits fingers of a user gripping the guiding device to be positioned on the finger-resting surface while being protected from an implement by the upstanding section during movement of the implement along the guiding device, adjacent the first scale.

  • Patent number: 6725559
Abstract: The tool for locating a center mark for embroidery on articles such as garments includes a planar body having orthogonally-related legs with respective exterior and interior edges. Index markings are provided on the legs along the linear edges. The index markings include indicia identifying a plurality of corresponding preestablished garment sizes along the linear extending edges, respectively. By aligning common selected sizes along the edges with the vertical centerline of a folded garment and a shoulder portion of the garment, respectively, the location of the embroiderer's center mark on the garment is identified at the intersection of the linear edges. The interior edges of the tool may also used to form marking lines where conventional hoop grids are not available.

  • Patent number: 6692032
Abstract: The present invention is a nontechnical, nonmechanical, easy to use, healthcare product that allows any individual to monitor changes in moles, freckles, or other skin growths in the comfort of their own home. It doubles as a record-keeping system that allows a person to compare new measures to their previously recorded measures—notice a change has occurred—and make a potentially life-saving appointment with a dermatologist. By using the flexible transparent sheets and a numeric value system, the product identifies changes in size, shape, color, “geography” of the mole and if any bleeding has occurred; all of which are important features in the development of skin cancer or melanoma. This product does not diagnose or treat a disease, but most importantly it provides people with a means of discovering a potential problem that normally would be undetected by the naked eye. This product has the potential to decrease medical care costs, reduce human suffering, and save lives.

  • Patent number: 6684522
Abstract: A special tape (22) for measuring blocks used in the construction of wood structures includes two special scales. A first scale has marks (32) spaced at 14½ inch intervals for making blocks for studs, and a second scale has marks (34) spaced at 22½ inch intervals for making blocks for rafters. The tape (22) is longitudinally placed along a two-by board (500) and marks (36) made on the two-by board (500) at the desired intervals of 14½ or 22½ inches. The two-by board (500) is then cut at the marks (36) to create the blocks, which are then placed between the studs or rafters.

A rear side of the hand-held device body is provided with a measure face defined thereon to measure an intersection angle of microphones. The ruler is mounted onto a side face of the hand-held device body proximate to the measure face in order to measure the distance between the respective diaphragms of the microphones. The observation device is mounted onto the hand-held device body to determine the sound dispersion area and remotely observe distant events. The different tools demanded by an acoustic/audio specialist are thus integrated into the hand-held device.
