Abstract: A differential gear housing includes grooves into which retaining rings are fitted which engage on races of tapered roller bearings. The width of the securing rings is determined in accordance with the desired tooth flank clearance between a ring gear and a bevel drive pinion and with a desired prestress in the tapered roller bearings. Preliminary to selecting the retaining rings, devices are used which engage with a tensioning bush in the grooves and have a pressure member movable axially inside the tensioning bush and supported on the respective tapered roller bearing race. The pressure member is then suitably moved in relation to the tensioning bush to a position where the desired prestress and tooth flank clearance have been reached. The desired retaining ring axial width can then be read off from the device followed by selection and insertion of the desired retaining rings.

Abstract: A nozzle for a gap measuring system includes a short outlet passageway defined by a smooth, cylindrical wall terminating in an outlet orifice and having an entrance orifice surrounded by a wall portion that is substantially perpendicular to the outlet passageway. As fluid flows through the nozzle, it encounters the surrounding wall portion at the entrance of the short outlet passageway of the nozzle which constricts the fluid flow upon entry into the short outlet passageway of the nozzle. As a result of the nozzle geometry, the fluid exits the nozzle outlet with a higher velocity, lower pressure and decreased turbulence. The incorporation of such a nozzle into a gap measuring system can produce an increase in the reliability and accuracy of distance determinations nearly ten times that which was previously attainable with prior nozzle inserts.

The one side is coextensive with the housing and is spring biased outwardly to contact the aligned roll segments. The monitor also comprises a gap sensor extending between opposite sides of the housing and having opposite ends engageable with the opposite pairs of rolls successively as the monitor moves through the path of travel. Transducer means are operatively connected to the gap sensor for transmitting signals representative of measurements of the gaps of each pair of rolls.
