  • Patent number: 11680784
Abstract: A tool, such as a tape measure, including a spring-based retraction system is shown. The tape measure includes a fluid-based retraction speed controller. The speed controller may be formed from a rotor/stator arrangement. The rotor is coupled to the reel and the stator is coupled to the housing opposing the rotor. The rotor converts some rotational energy from tape reel into movement of a fluid (e.g., movement of air, movement of oil, etc. through friction) which acts to slow or limit the retraction/rotational speed of the reel as the retraction spring expands driving the reel during tape blade retraction.

  • Patent number: 11598622
Abstract: The present invention provides a measuring tape having one or more guiding elements, provides the ability for quick and easy cutting and/or scribing of lines on drywall and other materials. A guiding element comprising a rigid attachment having an elongated aperture is provided that can receive a writing utensil tip or cutting blade. In addition, the main body of the tape measure may contain a second guiding element that can be placed against the outer edge of whichever construction material is being marked or cut, thereby providing an appropriate surface to facilitate the travel of the tape measure body along the edge of the material. This guide also acts as protection of the fingers/hand that holds the main body of the tape measure during travel.

  • Patent number: 11460283
Abstract: A device is disclosed including a compact tape measure housing enclosing a tape spool with a multi-segment spring-loaded tape retention mechanism having a tape spool, a primary rewind spring, a secondary rewind spring coupled together via a rotating spring coupling. In various embodiments, the primary and the secondary springs may be placed side-by-side making the two springs and the overall tape measure device smaller in diameter. The primary and the secondary rewind springs are coupled to the tape spool and the housing via an axle pin. The diameter of the tape measure housing may be reduced if two or more rewind springs are used instead of a single one. The primary and the secondary rewind springs operate in series. On pulling the measuring tape, the primary spring is compressed, causing the secondary rewind spring to compress. On release of the tape, the springs operate in reverse, retracting the tape.

Abstract: Disclosed is a rule assembly having a housing, a reel rotatably mounted in the housing, an elongated blade wound on the reel and extendable through an opening in the housing, and an end hook member attached to the elongated blade. A hook portion extends downwardly below a bottom surface of the housing when the blade is in a fully retracted position. The housing has an opening having an upper portion disposed above the blade, and a flexible cover overhanging the opening to inhibit or prevent penetration of debris therein. The cover is flexed by the end hook member upon impact by force (e.g., when dropped) and permits movement of the end hook member into the opening to reduce deformation of the end hook member. Optionally, a grip cover made of elastomeric material is provided on the housing and the cover is part of the grip cover.

  • Patent number: 9574862
Abstract: A multifunctional ergonomic tape measure provides a stopping mechanism within its housing body containing a retractable measuring tape which is engaged by squeezing together the housing body and a hinged arm, thereby clamping the measuring tape firmly between two friction surfaces provided by corresponding friction pads mounted in opposed facing relation on the housing body and the arm. The housing includes a duck-bill extending from the front of the body. The duck-bill has a flat, large surfaced face on the front thereof for reading measurements and for sliding along the edges of building material when making parallel lines. The tape end of the tape provides a thumb hold on its upper portion to aid the user in firmly holding both a pencil or utility knife and the tape end. The tape measure is useful for drawing a radius, to obtain inside measurements, and as a square to mark short length right angle lines.

Stiffness in the extended form may be provided using membrane curvature, or a retractable support member may be used, or both. Transitions between the extended form and the retracted form are preferably accomplished using sequential activation of tensile members that are configured in segments of the membrane. Activation of the tensile elements is preferably implemented using a processor or controller that activates tri-state drivers in a predetermined sequence in order to pass a current through each element when heating is desired. A preferred material used for the tensile elements is thin film NITINOL.

Abstract: An electronic measuring tape (11) that comprises a roller (8) onto which the measuring tape (12) is arranged to be wound up onto and wound out from through the roller (8) being rotated, a first end (3) of the measuring tape (12) is attached in the roller (8), and where the roller (8) is located inside a housing (9a, 9b). The invention is characterised in that a rolled up measuring tape (12) is arranged in loops on the roller (8), of which all loops are in direct contact with the surface (1) of the roller (8), in that an angle sensor (6) is arranged at the roller (8) arranged to record an angle of rotation during the rotation of the roller (8), and in that an electronic circuit (15) is arranged to convert the said angle of rotation into a length that corresponds to the length by which the measuring tape (12) has been withdrawn from the said housing (9a, 9b), and in that the measuring tape (12) records absolute values.

Abstract: A tape measure includes a case with an opening, a core inside the case, a spring extending around and imparting a radially inward force to most of a circumference of the core, and a graduated free metal tape with an arcuate cross-section that is wound around the core between the core and spring. The free metal tape is not connected to the case and core and its entire length is passable through the opening. The spring urges the tape flat against the core. The tape may be graduated on both sides. The case may include rollers that roll on an external periphery of the tape wound around the core and that are urged radially inward by the spring, and plural slots in which respective axes of the rollers are displaced in response to a change of diameter of the external periphery of the tape wound around the core.

Abstract: An automatic locking mechanism for use in a power return tape measure includes a user-accessible actuator, a brake element, and a biasing member normally urging the brake element into contact with the tape drum. In a locked position, the brake element wedges against the drum. The actuator displaces inwardly to move the brake element out of contact with the drum. A rotatable coupler/member may convert pivoting motion of the actuator into brake member translation. The coupler may include first and second arms that respectively contact the actuator and the brake element. The coupler may further include a cammed outer surface that contacts the drum in the locked position. The cammed surface rotates out of contact with the drum in the release position. The cammed surface of the rotatable member may be used independently of, or in conjunction with, the brake element. Related methods are also described.

Abstract: The present invention is a universal tape measure jacket with dual retractable marking means capabilities. The universal tape jacket with dual marking means when retrofit over conventional tape measures creates an affordable measure and marking system. The tape locking means on most conventional tape measures could also be modified to be able to link with either/or of the retractable marking means on the universal tape jacket; thus, the user has the option to lock the tape coil into a fixed position and then manually engage one or both of the dual markers independent of the tapes locking means or when linked with one or more of the retractable markers, make them work in conjunction with the tape measures locking means.
