  • Patent number: 8754556
Abstract: In a starter for starting an on-vehicle engine, a solenoid is provided to push a pinion gear. The solenoid has an electromagnetic coil composed of a single coil and electrically separated from a motor circuit, a fixed core, and a plunger. Supply of excitation current to the electromagnetic coil allows the fixed core to be magnetized to attract the plunger. Hence, a movement of the plunger results in a push of the movable member toward the ring gear. A switch is provided in the circuit and has a contact, a movable core, and a switch coil functioning as an electromagnet attracting the movable core in response to supply of current to the switch coil. A movement of the movable core results in on/off switching operations of the switch. The switch is allowed to operate independently of the solenoid when both the switch and solenoid are controlled.

The spring adaptively fits within the area configured to receive at least a portion of the plunger and within a portion of the plunger. The spring provides additional force to the plunger when moving out of the solenoid body and the magnet is used to latch the plunger when the plunger is forced to within close proximity of the magnet within the solenoid body.

Abstract: A noise decreasing type electromagnetic switch includes a buffer disposed between a stationary core and a contact spring to electrically support a shaft and the stationary core. The buffer includes a buffering space therein. Accordingly, impact caused at the stationary core and the shaft can be effectively absorbed even by the buffering space as well as an elastic force of the buffer. The buffer is inserted in the stationary core for coupling so as to be prevented from being separated during operations, resulting in maintaining long-term durability. Also, the buffer may support the stationary core and a metal plate, whereby an assembly process can be simplified.

Abstract: A normally-closed electromagnetic relay which may be used in controlling a supply of electric current to an automotive engine starter. The electromagnetic relay is equipped with a resistor and a shirt circuit. The short circuit is created by closing of relay contacts when a relay coil is energized to establish an electric connection between ends of the resistor to supply the current from a battery to an electric motor without flowing through the resistor and opened by opening of the relay contacts when the relay coil is deenergized to supply the electric current from the battery to the electric motor through the resistor. If a motor drive signal line leading to the electromagnetic relay is disconnected when the relay coil is kept energized, it will cause the short circuit to be established to ensure the supply of current to the motor, which also avoids the melting down of the resistor.

Abstract: A forced return solenoid that includes an electrical winding configured to create an electromagnetic field when electrical current flows through the winding, an electrical terminal configured to be connected to a source of electrical energy, and a moveable contact plate configured to be moved into contact with the electrical terminal. Embodiment of the forced return solenoid include a plunger configured to move axially in response to the electromagnetic field generated by the electrical winding. Movement of the plunger in one direction causes the moveable contact plate to connect with the electrical terminal. Movement of the plunger in the opposite direction causes an impact intended to break the connection between the moveable contact plate and the electrical terminal. Embodiments of the forced return solenoid further include a return spring configured to move the plunger in the second direction, wherein the impact means comprises a removable snap ring affixed to the plunger.
