A third coil is wound about the middle section of one of the U-shaped core portions prior to the core portions being joined. The circuit thereby reduces the power drain necessary to operate a given load.

Biasing is provided of the magnetic core so as to provide operation in the non-linear parts of the core's hysteresis cycle. A first coil on the ferromagnetic core has an AC excitation signal applied thereto and a second coil on the core is wound orthogonally to the first coil and is adapted to have an output signal derived therefrom. A control or input current in a third coil is used to unbalance the magnetic bridge formed by the four legs, so as to produce a mutual inductance different from zero between the first and second coil. The biasing may be provided by a fourth coil or by permanent magnet means.

    Abstract: A high voltage transformer includes at least one secondary coil mounted on an insulating support assembly and having the start lead of the secondary coil disposed proximate to the transformer core with a finish lead disposed at the perimeter of the coil. The finish lead is connected to ground potential and the start lead is provided at the high voltage potential of the transformer, thereby minimizing the insulation requirements of the transformer. The insulating support assembly for the secondary coil includes flanges at the opposite ends thereof to define a winding space for the secondary coil. Each of the flanges includes a channel formed therein for providing a passageway for the high voltage start lead of the secondary coil that extends from the inside layer of the secondary coil to above the edge of the flange. The flange also has a recess that extends between the opposite edges thereof for receiving and insulating sheet member.

The transformer uses a core configured such that a vector sum of the induction produced by two windings in the core rotates through 360.degree.. This is accomplished by arranging the component induction vectors to be perpendicular and the source voltages associated with each of the component induction vectors to be 90.degree. out of phase. If the inductions are of equal magnitude and the vector sum is sufficient to saturate the core, rotation of the vector sum saturates the entire core and the transformer experiences a very low or nearly negligible hysteresis losses. Various topological configurations for the core, including a toroid, are described. The transformer windings can be arranged for single, two-phase, three-phase, or multi-phase operation.

    Abstract: A dot printer head in which a radial array of armatures are disposed opposite to a yoke and cores equipped with coils, and the armatures are actuated together with needles by exciting the coils to perform a desired printing operation. In this arrangement, a magnetic flux generated from each core flows to the yoke via the associated armature and then returns to the former core while partially flowing through another magnetic path by way of the adjacent armature to the yoke and returning to the former core, whereby required magnetic paths are obtained without the necessity of increasing the areas of the mutually opposed surfaces of the armature and the yoke. Thus, the radial width of the yoke is reduced as well as the distance from the fulcrum of the armature to the core, so that the distance from the fulcrum of the armature to the fore end thereof can be sufficiently lengthened against the distance from the armature fulcrum to the core.

Thus the coupling between the primary and secondary windings, and conduction period in each cycle of the AC output voltage are controlled. The control of the conduction period in each cycle provides the control of the power transmitted from the primary winding to the secondary winding.
