Abstract: Coils coupled to magnetically soft cores are a very important building block in today's electronics, used for manipulating electromagnetic fields. They are very important, for example, for transformers, inductors, filters, oscillators, and motors. Apart from permeability, the most important characteristics of such cores are high flux density and low core losses. The smaller the magnetic pieces within the typically ceramic substance of the core can become, the better the permeability, high flux density, and low core losses, which means also faster reaction times. The present invention is intended to improve the efficiency and abilities of coils by using, instead of typical Ferrite cores, a core based on a substance containing nano-structures, which can be for example Bucky Balls or Bucky tubes. Various possible variations and combinations of this are shown.

  • Patent number: 6175727
Abstract: A novel inductor termed a suspended printed inductor (SPI) and an LC-type printed filter constructed using the suspended printed inductor is disclosed. The LC-type suspended printed filter is formed over any suitable substrate material, such as a dielectric substrate, with greatly reduced effects on filter performance due to the characteristics of the material. SPIs are characterized by the absence of a ground plane. A ground plane may physically still exist but it is located at a sufficient distance form the printed circuit board such that the distance can be considered virtual infinity from an RF circuit perspective. A number of different types of inductors can be fashioned as a suspended printed type inductor, including serpentine line inductors or transmission line inductors. The suspended printed inductor can be utilized to construct numerous types of filters such as low pass, high pass, band pass, band stop or any combination thereof.

  • Patent number: 4795995
Abstract: A system for producing alternating electromagnetic fields for use in theft detection and surveillance systems, including an arrangement of field-generating inductance coils for disposition on opposite sides of a passage to be monitored by the electromagnetic field produced by such coils. In a preferred such arrangement, upper and lower coils are used on each side of the passage and such coils are mutually distinct from one another and separately energizeable so as to generate separate components of a resulting composite electromagnetic field. The upper and lower coils in each such set are preferably disposed in coplanar alignment with one another but have at least portions of one coil overlapping portions of the other, so as to enhance uniformity in the resulting electromagnetic field. The array of separately-energizeable coils provides for resultant flux vector variation in the magnetic field along three mutually orthogonal axes as a function of coil drive excitation phase variation.

Spacers at the coil form (2) position the coil unit (1/2) in the annular groove in such a way that the coil (1) is exactly in the middle of the annular groove (4). The remaining free space of the annular groove (4) is then filled with a sealing compound (6) in a vacuum. The sealing compound also spreads between the windings of the coil (1). It is preferably the same material as that from which the coil form (2) is made.
