  • Patent number: 8260487
Abstract: Methods and systems for a vital bus system for communicating data in a control system are provided. The system includes a plurality of data communication buses configured in a multiple redundant orientation and at least one safety supervisor module including a database including a plurality of logic rules. The logic rules are programmed to receive data from the plurality of data communication buses and to determine the validity of the received data from each bus using one or more of the plurality of the logic rules. If the received data is invalid, the logic rules are programmed to restore the validity of the data using one or more of the plurality of the logic rules. If the data can not be restored the logic rules are programmed to transmit an alert to the control system. Otherwise, the logic rules are programmed to transmit the validated data to an intended destination.

Abstract: Provided is a system, a tool and a method for communicating with a faulted circuit indicator (FCI), the faulted circuit indicator including a detection circuit for monitoring an electrical conductor of a power system. The system includes a remote display mounted in a wall of an enclosure and visible from outside of the enclosure and a first light emitting diode associated with the remote display. The first light emitting diode generates an optical FCI status signal in response to an occurrence of a fault in the electrical conductor. The system also includes a first microcontroller operatively coupled to the remote display and the detection circuit, and a handheld user command tool adapted to optically couple with the remote display. The handheld user command tool is also adapted to generate an optical serial communication. The optical serial communication provides data and commands for operation of the faulted circuit indicator.

  • Patent number: 7337092
Abstract: System events preceding occurrence of a problem are likely to be similar to events preceding occurrence of the same problem at other times or on other systems. Thus, the cause of a problem may be identified by comparing a trace of events preceding occurrence of the problem with previously diagnosed traces. Traces of events preceding occurrences of a problem arising from a known cause are reduced to a series of descriptive elements. These elements are aligned to correlate differently timed but otherwise similar traces of events, converted into symbolic representations, and archived. A trace of events leading to an undiagnosed a problem similarly is converted to a symbolic representation. The representation of the undiagnosed trace is then compared to the archived representations to identify a similar archived representation. The cause of the similar archived representation is presented as a diagnosis of the problem.

  • Patent number: 7327218
Abstract: An electronic radio frequency (RF) identification system 10 is disclosed and claimed. The system includes an interrogator 11 and a plurality of RF transponders 12.1 to 12.n. In use, each transponder is operative in response to an interrogation signal 14 to respond with a forward error correctable data message 16.1 including base data encoded as symbol characters in accordance with a forward error correcting code, such as a Reed Solomon Code, and check characters on the base data as defined in the forward error correcting code. The interrogator 11 utilizes data relating to the forward error correcting code, the symbol characters and check characters in the received forward error correctable data message, to reconstruct the base data in the event of corruption of the forward error correctable data message during transmission.

  • Patent number: 7308331
Abstract: A computer system implements a process for gathering, synthesizing, and analyzing failure and other data relating to a pump, seal or other equipment. Data indicating the current state of the equipment may be gathered and verified prior to a failure occurring so that accurate information is available. After a failure or problem occurs, data about the system and the problem or failure can be methodically gathered to aid in the determination of the root cause of the failure. The data may be synthesized and an analysis performed to determine the cause or causes of the failure or problem. The system may suggest corrective actions and plans for implementing corrective action. Installation instructions, training and safety information can be provided to the user to ensure proper execution of the selected corrective action. A plant reliability manager also may monitor the progress and verify that installation, maintenance and failure correction are performed correctly.

Abstract: Disclosed is a system and method for wireless motion control. The system generally includes a centralized motion coordinator device and one or more motion stick devices that communicate with each other wirelessly. The centralized motion coordinator controls operation of the one or more motion stick devices by wirelessly transmitting basic commands to the one or more motion stick devices. In response, the motion stick devices process the received commands and generate trajectory information based, at least in part, on the commands received from the centralized motion coordinator device. The trajectory information is used to control operation of a motor for advancement of an actuator assembly associated with the one or more motion stick devices along a predetermined axis.

  • Patent number: 7242291
Abstract: A tester for an arc fault circuit interrupter that can selectively simulate and apply electrical arc faults and nuisance loads to at least one device under test (DUT). The tester includes a power supply, a test controller, and test circuitry coupleable to a DUT. AC power input is provided to the DUT and the power supply, which regulates the AC power input to a DC level for powering the test controller. The test circuitry full wave rectifies AC current returning from the DUT, and the test controller controls a switch in the test circuitry. When the switch is on, the AC current flows through the DUT, the full wave rectifier, the load, and the switch to ground. To simulate an arcing condition, the test controller turns the switch on and off at random intervals. To simulate a nuisance load condition, the test controller turns the switch on and off at periodic intervals. In this way, proper operation of the DUT can be verified under both arcing and nuisance load conditions.

  • Patent number: 7139239
Abstract: In building automation architectures, components may be associated through physical communications paths and at a different level through building automation applications. Building automation applications implement control processes for a building function. Due to changing needs, such as a failure of a physical communications path or the addition or removal of components, the building automation application may be more appropriately performed in a different device. By dynamically positioning or determining a processor for implementing a building automation application, an architecture or network may more optimally control building functions, such as by requiring less user input, more rapid response and/or avoiding building function failures.

Abstract: The emergency alert service responds to receipt of emergency alert messages by filtering, formatting and routing emergency alert information to a variety of different networked appliances and also to remote devices. In this way, a consistent warning message is disseminated simultaneously over many different warning systems, thus increasing warning effectiveness while simplifying the warning task. The system thus provides a common alerting protocol that is simple but quite robust and capable of exchanging all-hazard emergency alerts and public warnings over all kinds of networks.
