Patent number: 7062281Abstract: A multi-mode paging system and method of selectively paging an individual through one of a plurality of paging mechanisms. An indication of a paging mechanism for each individual to be paged is stored in a memory device. When an input is received from a user to page the individual, a control processor retrieves the indication of a paging mechanism for the individual to be paged and determines which of the plurality of paging mechanisms is to be utilized to page the individual. The individual may be selectively paged through an on-premises paging system, a wide area paging system, or a telephone such as a cellular telephone. An autodialer may be remotely located and connected by a wireless link to the processor, or the system may dial out using a wireless subscriber unit.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2002Date of Patent: June 13, 2006Assignee: Long Range Systems, Inc.Inventors: Russell P. Patent number: 7061396Abstract: A locating and monitoring system includes transmitters worn by a person, animal, or equipment to transmit an unique identification code while moving about a facility. The code is transmitted by pulse bursts at diverse times during predetermined time intervals to prevent synchronization with resident signals in the facility. Receivers in the walls or ceilings of the facility respond to the infrared radiation of the pulse bursts and validate the identification code by a checksum of the code through a comparison with a checksum transmitted with the code. The receivers deliver validated codes to arbitrators and receive back signals indicative of the level of an individual assigned to a class wearing the transmitters. Signals from the receivers are received by arbitrators which forward the codes to a CPU for recording start and stop events indicative of movement by transmitters into and out of the reception range of the various receivers.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 1995Date of Patent: June 13, 2006Assignee: Dwyer Precision Products, Inc.Inventors: Alexander Conrad, Charles Bell

Patent number: 7023832Abstract: A highly reliable radio paging system with a combination of time, frequency and spacial diversity in order to increase the reliability of the system. Time diversity is provided by broadcasting the same message at a number of different times. Spacial diversity is achieved by broadcasting the same message from a number of different locations. Frequency diversity is achieved by broadcasting the same message at a number of different frequencies. The paging receiver is designed to receive messages on a number of different frequencies; however, the pager only responds to a message the first time that it receives the particular message. The combination of time, frequency, and spacial diversity provide a highly reliable radio paging system.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 2002Date of Patent: April 4, 2006Assignee: Seiko Instruments, Inc.Inventors: Lawrence Ragan, Garold B. Patent number: 6960983Abstract: A global paging system and corresponding method are disclosed in which an originating user pages a receiving user in a different country without the paging message being broadcast in all areas. According to certain embodiments, the originating user E-mails a web site or server of the paging system paging information, with the server then transmitting the paging message over a packet-switched digital data network (e.g. the Internet) to a receiving or terminating web site or server located in the different country. In certain embodiments, the receiving user remotely inputs a designated country into the paging system so that when the receiving user is paged, the paging system first pages the receiving user in the designated country or area without broadcasting the paging message in other countries or areas.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 2003Date of Patent: November 1, 2005Assignee: Technology Patents, LLCInventor: Aris Mardirossian

Patent number: 6538561Abstract: There is disclosed an inbound message receiving system for use in a wireless messaging system. The inbound message receiving system comprises: 1) a source base transceiver station capable of receiving a wireless message from a source mobile station disposed in a coverage area of the base transceiver station; and 2) a first satellite transceiver coupled to the base transceiver station and capable of transmitting the wireless message to a satellite. The use of a satellite uplink that is closely associated with the base transceiver station allows all wireless messages to be relayed directly to a central message processor without requiring the wireless messages to be transported via long-distance lines or other toll-charge bearing communication lines.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1998Date of Patent: March 25, 2003Assignee: WebLink Wireless, Inc.Inventor: Allan D. Patent number: 6529117Abstract: A radio selective call receiver includes a receiving section, a recognizing section, an alarm section and a control section. The receiving section receives a radio signal. The recognizing section detects a message and a selective call number from the received radio signal, and recognizes selectively a reception time of the message as a latest reception time based on a kind of the selective call number. The alarm section generates an alarm in response to an alarm instruction. The control section compares at a comparison timing, a time difference between a current time and the latest reception time and a predetermined time period, and selectively outputs the alarm instruction to the alarm section based on the comparing result.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1999Date of Patent: March 4, 2003Assignee: NEC CorporationInventor: Hideki Narusawa

Patent number: 6515577Abstract: A multichannel selective call receiver (10) includes-a receiver (11), a controller (16), a baud detector (17) and a memory (18). The controller is adapted to control the receiver in receiving information on a channel (14). The information on the channel includes mandatory frames having information fields. If the information fields in a mandatory frame on the channel do not indicate more information for the multichannel selective call receiver in the rest of the mandatory frame, the controller controls the receiver to receive information on other channels (15) during the rest of the mandatory frame. The information on the channel and the other channels is processed in accordance with channel priority as indicated in a channel list stored in the memory.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1999Date of Patent: February 4, 2003Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Dee Nai Ong, Yong Tong Chua, Kim Hoong Ngai, Karl Robert Weiss

Patent number: 6442159Abstract: In a method of routing a short message with high or low priority from a service center to a mobile station in a public land mobile network providing both packet data service and circuit switched service, a choice is made, in advance, as to whether the short message should be received by the mobile station either via a specific one of the services or via any of the services. Based upon this choice in step, the priority of the short message sent from the service center, and an indication of whether the mobile station is reachable via one, both or none of the services, a route via one of the services, a route via both services or no route at all is selected. If a route via one of the services is selected, the short message is routed in accordance with the selected route. If a route via both services is selected, the route via the service having a higher preference than the other service is selected, and the short message is routed in accordance with the route via said service having the higher preference.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 1998Date of Patent: August 27, 2002Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Thierry Josse, Miguel Cobo Esteban, Jose Javier Cabero Combarros, Peter Edlund

Patent number: 6329902Abstract: A wide area paging broadcast channel for transmitting a page signal throughout a prescribed geographic area over a broadcast channel in response to a page request. At least one subscriber transceiver is located within the prescribe geographic area for receiving the page. In response to the received page signal, the subscriber transceiver transmits information back to the paging control center. However, the backhaul to the paging control center is accomplished by a plurality of base stations. Each base station forms a node in a mesh network of base stations which covers the prescribed geographic area. The subscriber transceiver may transmit information packets to nodes within the mesh network using a multiple access scheme with or without carrier sense access. The mesh network automatically selects which neighboring node to use for forwarding packets. Finally, a gateway device links the mesh network of base stations to the control center.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 1995Date of Patent: December 11, 2001Assignee: Cellco PartnershipInventors: William Chein-Yeh Lee, Michael L.
