  • Patent number: 11049141
Abstract: Handheld communication devices, such as smart phones, comprise a number of data gathering sensors. The sensors may be utilized to provide an agent of a contact center with situational information regarding the user of the handheld device. While global positioning systems (GPS) provides one means to locate a user of a communication device, GPS is not always available. However, by utilizing radio receivers, internal condition sensors, motion detectors, and other sensing components, a situation for a customer may be determined to supplement or substitute for GPS-determined location as well as to identify more relevant situations for the user beyond those provided by GPS provided location information.

Abstract: A wireless network has a transmitting node that can send a multicast message over the wireless network to a plurality of receiving nodes. Each of the receiving nodes, on receipt of the multicast message, can estimate, based on the receipt of the multicast message, a distance between the transmitting node and the receiving node. If the distance is within a certain distance range from the transmitting node, the receiving node implements a delay of a predetermined amount of time before retransmitting the message to its neighboring nodes. If the distance is beyond that range, the message is retransmitted without delay. All nodes within the distance range implement the same delay before retransmission, however, they may also implement an additional, randomized delay to allow nodes to transmit in several discrete time slots, thereby avoiding or minimizing data collisions with other nodes' transmissions of the message.

Abstract: The technology relates to detecting and responding to emergency vehicles. This may include using a plurality of microphones to detect a siren noise corresponding to an emergency vehicle and to estimate a bearing of the emergency vehicle. This estimated bearing is compared to map information to identify a portion of roadway on which the emergency vehicle is traveling. In addition, information identifying a set of objects in the vehicle's environment as well as characteristics of those objects is received from a perception system is used to determine whether one of the set of objects corresponds to the emergency vehicle. How to respond to the emergency vehicle is determined based on the estimated bearing and identified road segments and the determination of whether one of the set of objects corresponds to the emergency vehicle. This determined response is then used to control the vehicle in an autonomous driving mode.
