  • Patent number: 10182219
Abstract: A transcoder resource retrieves content stored in a repository. The stored content can be encoded in accordance with a first encoding format. The transcoder resource transcodes the retrieved content into a second encoding format. To increase available capacity, the transcoder resource stores the content in the second encoding format as a replacement to the content encoded according to the first encoding format. The second encoding format can support a higher compression ratio than the first encoding format. Additionally, the transcoding can be performed as one of multiple tasks executed in parallel. In such an instance, during parallel processing, a content management resource interleaves execution of the main processing task and the background task of transcoding the content into the second encoding format. The transcoding task can be assigned a lower execution priority than one or more other tasks executed in parallel.

Abstract: A communication device includes a determination unit that determines whether there is a speaker in different hubs by using sets of sound-related information that are transmitted from the respective different hubs via a communication network; and a display unit that displays, in a predetermined size on a display surface, an image that is transmitted from a different hub in which the determination unit determines that there is no speaker, and that displays, in an enlarged size larger than the predetermined size on the display surface, an image that is transmitted from a different hub in which the determination unit determines that there is a speaker. When the determination unit determines that there are speakers in multiple different hubs, the display unit collectively displays, in the enlarged size on the display surface, multiple images that are transmitted from the respective different hubs.

  • Patent number: 9253532
Abstract: A participation device in a multiparty conference call may act as a server device and/or a client device for two-way audio and video (AV) streaming. A server device may encode a requested AV stream into a set of different encoding profiles that may be dynamically determined based on the varying channel conditions and device capacities of the client devices. At least a portion of differently encoded AV streams is selected and dynamically communicated to the client devices for display. Session parameters are determined according to the varying channel conditions and the device capacities of the client devices to create intended sessions. The selected encoded AV streams are communicated utilizing segment-based adaptive streaming techniques such as HTTP. A client device may access to a HTTP session to download an expected AV stream from the server device. The downloaded AV stream may be decoded into different decoding profiles for display as needed.

Abstract: We describe a system for automatic setup of an audio/computer teleconference. The system comprises node units each having a phone connection, a telephone network connection, at least one computer network connection; and a system control server. The node unit comprises code to: transmit an outgoing audio announce message into a potential conference call via said telephone network audio connection, identifying the node unit; receive via the network audio connection an incoming audio announce message from a conference call to which the node unit is already connected; determine from the incoming message, an identifier for a remote node unit connecting to the conference call; and transmit to the server, via the computer network, identifiers for the local and remote node units. The server comprises code to: receive the node unit identifiers and provide computer equipment connection data to computer equipment at node.

  • Patent number: 9182579
Abstract: A device for taking long-distance images includes, successively: a catadioptric optical system and an optical system to shape the beam positioned close to the first image generated by the catadioptric system, which adjusts the exit aperture of the catadioptric system on a second image of the aperture in an image space of a variable focal length optical system. The catadioptric optical system and the optical system to shape the beam generates a third image of the observed scene. A focal plane is superposed over an image plane of the catadioptric optical system and the optical system to shape the beam. A projection lens receives the light beam output by the variable focal length system and forms a fourth image of the observed scene at the focal plane of the projection lens. An image sensor is positioned at the focal plane of the projection lens.

Abstract: A demarcation point unit connected between a home network backbone and an external network. The demarcation point unit includes a blocking filter and splitter. The blocking filter receives a home network signal from the home network backbone and an external signal from the external network. The blocking filter separates the home network signal from the external signal, and returns the home network signal back to the home network backbone. The splitter has an input and at least two outputs. The input of the splitter receives the home network signal from the blocking filter.

  • Patent number: 9071864
Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for correcting synchronization errors, which involve correcting synchronization errors occurring between video signals and audio signals when multiple videos are combined. The apparatus and method of the present invention involve: storing synchronization errors between an initial video signal and an initial audio signal of each video to be combined when combining different pieces of video content; and combining multiple pieces of video content such that the initial synchronization error which is set to synchronize existing video signals with existing audio signals can be maintained when combining multiple pieces of video content. The apparatus and method of the present invention enable the drawbacks of conventional techniques, i.e. that video signals and audio signals are uniformly combined, errors are corrected, and thus the video signals and the audio signals are unsynchronized which results in unnatural video, to be overcome.

  • Patent number: 9071847
Abstract: A video codec provides for encoding and decoding pictures of a video sequence at various coded resolutions, such that pictures can be encoded at lower coded resolutions based on bit rate or other constraints while maintaining a consistent display resolution. The video codec employs a coding syntax where a maximum coded resolution is signaled at the sequence level of the syntax hierarchy, whereas a lower coded resolution is signaled at the entry point level for a segment of one or more intra-coded frames and frames predictively encoded based thereon. This allows the use of a separate out-of-loop resampler after the decoder to up-sample the pictures to the display resolution.

Abstract: Disclosed is a communication system for effecting communication events between endpoints connected via a communication network. The communication system comprises a plurality of processing units, each having access to computer storage holding executable code modules for managing a communication event. The code modules are configured to implement a media modality controller configured to manage media modality of an established communication event and a call controller configured to establish the communication event. The communication system further comprises a resource allocator configured to allocate physical resources of the processing units and computer storage to each of the call controller and the media modality controller. A grant of physical resources to the call controller is independent and different from a grant of physical resources to the media modality controller.

Abstract: Improved methods, systems, and devices for managing communications are provided. A user device may display all ongoing communications so that a user can visualize the communications network or some subset thereof (e.g., a subgroup or group of users). A system may maintain the user device in an instant ready-on mode of communication with the other user devices. A user may then initiate communications with a subgroup (e.g., a pair) or group without initiating a new connection. Accordingly, a user can simultaneously and fluidly communicate at the subgroup level, at the group level, or at the inter-group level. Moreover, users can function as independent actors that can freely form and leave subgroups as well as groups.
