Abstract: This invention provides a calibration system and method for multi-unit display systems without a need for switching the system input resolution/configuration of the display system while calibrating. This serves to avoid carrying out a re-synchronization step. As such, this system and method allows for increases speed and reduced likelihood of failure. This system and method also corrects the display system by providing an arrangement that employs a minimum of required changes so as to avoid any changes that can consequently affect the output image of the display system. Calibration of the system of display units occurs free of any changes to the input resolution and this resolution is maintained in a manner that resists change unless specifically required. Moreover, this system and method enables a resolution for the overall system that differs from the sum of the input resolutions of the discrete, individual display units in the collection.

If the imaged feature changes orientation with respect to the display by less than a threshold amount, then the switch in display mode is disabled and the display remains in its current mode. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.

Abstract: Methods, systems and apparatuses for white balance calibration. A calibration correction matrix is specifically calibrated for each individual imager, thereby providing improved automatic white balance performance. The individual imager calibration corrects for variation of the spectral response among different imagers. The calibration correction matrix is placed before the gray checker module, which analyzes the chromaticity of the image pixels and supplies resulting statistics to the automatic white balance decision engine for use in automatic white balance operations. The calibration correction matrix may be implemented as a 3×3 matrix.

First, the simulated light output is generated based on qualities of the first display. Next, the simulated light output is compensated for color differences, temporal differences, luminance differences including gamma difference, and differences in viewing environment between the first and the second display, in real-time. Then, the simulated light output that has been compensated for the differences and for viewing environment is output for the second display.

Abstract: A system for adjusting the light uniformity of a monitor. The system comprises a camera for capturing a test pattern image on a display of the monitor and a controller configured to select the test pattern image and to cause the monitor to display the selected test pattern image. The controller receives the captured image from the camera and compares pixel values from the captured image to known pixel values associated with the selected test pattern image. The selected test pattern image has an ideal uniform light distribution and the captured image has a non-uniform light distribution. In response to the comparison, the controller calculates a compensation light distribution that may be combined with the non-uniform light distribution to generate a resulting image on the display of the monitor having a resulting light distribution that approximates the ideal uniform light distribution.

Abstract: An arrangement is provided for automatically correcting a digital image by first examining the image to determine the class or type of correction that is needed to produce a more accurate rendition. The classes or types of corrections may include such items as exposure, color, depth of field, sharpness, distortion, and combinations thereof. The type of correction that is needed by any particular digital image is determined from an analysis of the image itself. Instead of presenting the user with a single corrected image, the user is typically presented with different renditions of the image. Each rendition corrects for the particular type of correction that has been identified, but in different ways from one another.

Abstract: Test patterns and associated techniques for testing the fidelity of intensity reproduction are disclosed. One set of embodiments provide test patterns that incorporate anti-aliased features such as anti-aliased edges or lines. In various embodiments, these anti-aliased features expose undesirable, nonlinear transformations of the test patterns by one or more devices in an image output system or chain. Using these test patterns, users may more easily evaluate the end-to-end gamma response of the system, and may more easily calibrate gamma controls accordingly. Additionally, users may more easily identify nonlinear image resampling performed in gamma, rather than linear, space.

In the image quality assessment method, the contrast of a measurement pattern displayed on the display apparatus, the brightness of the background, and the resolution are adjusted, and thereby the luminance characteristic of the measurement pattern is detected. Accordingly, the image quality of a display apparatus can be assessed using the number of waves determined from the luminance characteristic and the modulation transfer function (MTF) of the waves. Therefore, image quality assessment can be performed objectively by the display apparatus.

  • Patent number: 7999852
Abstract: Testing a display involves display of a series of test patterns, each at a different luminance or color, and with a predetermined minimum difference of luminance or color from their background, each pattern being unpredictable to a user, and determining if the user has correctly identified the patterns. This can enable a more objective test without needing external measuring equipment. Calibrating the display involves determining an output luminance level by detecting a minimal difference of drive signal to give a just noticeable output luminance difference at a given high luminance drive level, and determining an absolute luminance of the given high input luminance level from the minimal difference and from a predetermined human characteristic of visibility threshold of luminance changes. This can avoid the need for an external or internal sensor. This can be useful during conformance checks or during calibration of the display for example.
