Abstract: Faults resulting in reception of a still, but unknown, frame are recognized by comparing each received frame of the video signal with its predecessor, incrementing a counter in the event that the difference between the frames falls below a threshold; and generating an alarm signal in the event that the count of the counter exceeds a predetermined count. Other types of fault such as loss of signal (i.e. reception of just noise) are recognized by incrementing the counter whenever the difference exceeds a threshold. Similar results may be obtained by instead the monitoring quantization step size and/or number of transmitted bits of a digitally coded signal, and noting that it falls below, or exceeds, a threshold. A preferred option is to compute a complexity measure, being a monotonically increasing function (e.g the product) of the quantization step size and of the number of coded bits and compare this with the threshold value.

Abstract: Described is a technology by which a remote or local geo-location service provides white space information that one or more client devices and/or base stations may use to determine which white spaces are available for use, e.g., for wireless networking. Because of the information, low-threshold sensing is not needed by the client devices and/or base stations to know which white spaces are available. The service computes the available white spaces for a given location based upon television transmitter parameters, elevation data, and information received regarding any operational wireless microphones.

Abstract: A system and method for three-axis stabilization of focal plane data. The system and method include performing a two-dimensional vertical shear transformation and a two-dimensional horizontal shear transformation. The system and method further incorporate a SIMD computer architecture and an array of addressable processing elements that process the field-of-view for a target image received by a focal plane array of detector elements. Each processing element includes a calculation device that calculates the row and column address of virtual pixels for a virtual field-of-view. The system and method further include a plurality of memory modules configured to store data in a plurality of addressable storage locations by column and row, and each memory module is identified with a different processing element. A dedicated memory routing network for the processing elements and memory modules permits the exchange of information between processing elements and memory modules associated with each processing element.

Abstract: A television broadcast receiving apparatus can change an oscillation frequency of a local oscillation signal or a tuning frequency of an intermediate frequency signal in a reception channel, and changes the reception characteristic to an optimum reception characteristic. In this way, the television broadcast receiving apparatus effectively reduces SN ratio deterioration due to interference of the outside of a reception band such as adjacent channel interference.

  • Patent number: 7889939
Abstract: Simulation of film grain in an image can occur by compressing a video image, then transmitting compressed video together with a message containing at least one parameter indicative of the original film grain, to a decoder, and restoring the original grainy appearance of images by having the decoder simulating film grain based on the content of the film grain message. To improve efficiency, one or more parameters of film grain information undergo scaling in accordance with a target pixel block size for pixel blocks in the image. Such scaling allows for the use of conventional circuitry for performing block-based operations in connection with the film grain simulation.

  • Patent number: 7773681
Abstract: In a wireless communication system, a method and apparatus for noise estimation of a received OFDM communication signal, wherein the signal comprises a data frame with a preamble having at least one long training field (LTF) containing two substantially similar OFDM symbols, comprise examining the LTF for substantially similar OFDM symbols. The noise power in the signal is estimated and the received signal power is measured. The signal to noise ratio is calculated and the signal power is determined by subtracting the noise power from the signal noise.

  • Patent number: 7680225
Abstract: It is determined whether phase noise and parasitic oscillation take place on the basis of a carrier-to-noise (C/N) ratio calculated with amplitudes in an amplitude direction of signal points of a reception signal and a C/N ratio calculated with amplitudes in a phase direction of the signal points of the reception signal. Further, when it has been determined that phase noise and parasitic oscillation take place, an alarm is displayed on a screen. When it has been determined that phase noise and parasitic oscillation take place, the phase of a demodulation circuit is compensated based on the detected phase noise.

Abstract: A high frequency receiver cancels a plurality of noise signals which are contained in a high frequency signal and outputted from a plurality of noise signal sources. The high frequency receiver cancels the noise signals using a plurality of pick-up noise signals extracted from a plurality of pick-up antennas disposed near the noise signal sources. At least one of the pick-up noise signals is selected in descending order of their effects on the degradation of reception quality, thereby completing noise cancelling in a short time.

  • Patent number: 7469414
Abstract: Apparatus, methods, and computer program products for detecting or locating a viable data carrier in a downstream channel by a cable modem. Potential channels for data carriers can be eliminated quickly by going through a “screening” process, i.e., the first constellation diagram match, thereby preventing those potential channels from going through a significantly more time-consuming second constellation match. The determination of whether the signal in the potential channel is modulated according to the first particular modulation scheme is done rapidly and only potential channels containing a signal likely to be modulated according to the second particular modulation scheme are examined for the second determination step.
