  • Patent number: 8942259
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention uses an abbreviated blanking period, in comparison to the standard VESA and CEA-EIA blanking periods, in order to send data, including low bandwidth, non-timing information, over one or more channels of the digital video link. By shortening the blanking period, the amount of time available for sending data in each scan line is increased, enabling the system to send more data over each channel. The inactive video portion of a scan line sent during vertical sync may also be used to send additional digital data. Shortening the blanking periods and/or using the inactive video sections of the horizontal scan lines adds to the overall data capacity of the link and may be used to send other digital data, such as multichannel audio, video, control, timing, closed captioning or other digital data.

Abstract: This invention relates to a device and a method of generating a first and a second fingerprint (102,104) usable for synchronisation of at least two signals (101,103) and corresponding method and device for synchronising two or more signals. A fingerprint pair is generated on the basis of a segment of a first signal e.g. an audio signal and of a segment of a second signal e.g. a video signal at each synchronisation time point. The generated fingerprint pair(s) are stored in a database (203) and communicated or distributed to a synchronisation device (303). During synchronisation, fingerprint(s) of the audio signal and fingerprint(s) of the video signal to be synchronised are generated and matched against fingerprints in the database. When a match is found, the fingerprints also determine the synchronisation time point, which is used to synchronise the two signals. In this way, a simple, reliable and efficient way of synchronising at least two signals is obtained.

Abstract: A 3D caption display method for harmoniously merging and displaying closed caption with 3D image in a 3D display apparatus, and a 3D display apparatus suitable for implementing the method. When the 3D display apparatus receives image signals of first and second images for implementing 3D image in a stereoscopic scheme, the 3D display apparatus receives closed caption data only for a base view determined from the first and second images. Then, the display apparatus determines the position of a closed caption for an extended view based on the closed caption data for the base view and a certain 3D caption information, and formats caption graphic data for the base view and the extended view to output 3D closed caption in a stereoscopic format.

Abstract: Data decoding devices avoiding data error from incorrect sampling points caused by serious interference are disclosed. The data decoding devices receive an analog signal carrying a reference clock and at least one digital data. In the data decoding device, a slicer generates a sampling clock with a frequency N times that of the reference clock, to slice the analog signal according to the sampling clock, thereby obtaining a first bitstream. A data check unit, divides the first bitstream into at least second and third bitstreams, evaluating whether the second bitstream is erroneous according to an error checking code thereof, outputting the second bitstream if it is error-free, and evaluating whether the third bitstream is erroneous according to the error checking code if the second bitstream is erroneous.

  • Patent number: 8553146
Abstract: A device obtains a video and a matrix code (such as a QR code) to divide into portions and interlace with the video. The device generates a modified interlaced video by including at least a first portion in a first but not a second field of a first frame, a second portion in a second but not a first field of a second frame, and so on such that all of the portions of the matrix code are included in the modified interlaced video. Subsequently, the device transmits the modified interlaced video to a display. When the modified interlaced video is displayed, the matrix code is present but not visually perceptible. A matrix code reader detects and/or records and analyzes the displayed modified video to identify the portions of the matrix code included therein, extract such portions, and combine the extracted portions to form the matrix code.

  • Patent number: 8539529
Abstract: In some implementations, closed captioning streams of textual data are extracted from video signals received by a client device. The closed captioning streams may be searched for occurrences of textual data in the closed captioning streams that match one or more search terms. When the number of matches between the search terms and a particular closed captioning stream exceeds a threshold number, a notification may be sent indicating that content programming determined to be of interest to a viewer has been located and/or the content programming may be recorded.

Additional information contained in a broadcast signal is classified by type before transmission. Only additional information of the type(s) desired by a user is selected and acquired from the received additional information. The type(s) of additional information acquired is (are) displayed on a screen in real time. Accordingly, only the additional information needed by the user is selectively stored in memory and memory can be efficiently used. Since the type(s) of additional information received is (are) displayed on the screen in detail, the user can easily understand the type(s) of additional information being received currently so that the additional information can be effectively used.

  • Patent number: RE45044
Abstract: Advertising is marked with a code in a way which makes it difficult to fool the system. The advertising is marked with a code at the time the advertising is produced. Then, when the advertising is broadcast, the code on the advertising is analyzed. Different security measures can be used, including producing the code in the closed captioning so that many different people can see the code, or comparing codes in one part of the signal with a code in another part of the signal. Measures are taken to prevent the code from being used to detect commercials. According to another part of this system, a paradigm for a clearinghouse is disclosed in which the user signs up with the clearinghouse, obtains a line of credit, and the advertiser, the agency, and the ad producer also subscribe to the service. When the ad is actually aired, the payment can be automatically transferred.
