Abstract: Displaying a graphics such as for example a diagram or a map on a display unit of a portable device requires a reduction in the number of pixels. In each case this requires a decomposition of the graphic into a number of blocks. To do this each block is usually subjected to what is known as “subsampling°. In such cases the semantically important contours disappear at least partly so that the content of the graphic is lost. To resolve this problem to a method is proposed which for a specific application assigns a weighting to the colors underlying the contours. For the reduction in dominant color is determined depending on the result of the weighting and this is simulated in a further procedural step from a set of specified basic and pseudo colors. In this way the semantically important contours of a graphic and thereby the readability are retained despite the fact that reduction has been undertaken.

Abstract: Image-dependent tone and color reproduction processing of digital images is accomplished by creating a spatially blurred and sub-sampled version of the original image, and applying knowledge of the capture device physical characteristics to obtain statistics related to the scene or original captured. The statistics are used for image-dependent linearization of the captured image data based on an OECF model, and in conjunction with information about the output medium, to calculate image-specific preferred tone reproduction curves based on a preferred reproduction model. The image data can then be processed for reproduction on output media with different density ranges and color gamuts. All the processing described can be accomplished automatically, but the access to accurate scene information afforded by the image-dependent linearization, and to the perceptually intuitive parameters controlling the calculation of the preferred reproduction curves, also allows for simple, intuitive manual adjustment.

These curves may be applied to the red, green, and blue channels of RGB-type images to produce preferred tone and color reproduction, or to the luminance channel of luminance-chrominance type images to produce preferred tone reproduction. Alternately, the linearized image data may be reproduced directly.

Abstract: The color-keyed regions of a color-keyed image are extracted from the color-keyed image, and the color-keyed regions and the non-color-keyed regions are independently scaled. The independently scaled regions are subsequently merged to form a scaled color-key image with clearly distinguished color-keyed regions and non-color-keyed regions. To minimize the blurring of edges in the non-color-key regions, the non-color-key colors are extended into color-keyed regions after the color-keyed information is extracted from the color-keyed image. To minimize the encroachment of the scaled color-keyed regions into the scaled non-color-keyed regions of the scaled color-key image, the edges of the scaled color-key regions are sharpened by defining the color-keyed region as the region wherein each scaled/filtered color-key value exceeds a non-zero threshold value. To facilitate the use of existing memory and structure in images that are encoded using three components per pixel, such as RGB, YUV, etc.

Abstract: A picture recording method for recording original picture data encodes the original picture so that the entirety of the original picture is displayed at its original resolution on a television monitor after being decoded. The method involves first scaling down an original picture image, then filling top, bottom, and left and right side regions around the scaled down picture image with pixels to attain a picture image that is of the same size and resolution as that of the original picture image. The scaled down and filled in image is then recorded by encoding and storing the picture data at the original resolution. The recorded picture data is then subsequently decoded for displaying all pixels of the original picture image at the original resolution on a television monitor.

Abstract: An image processing apparatus and a method for changing an active size performed therein are provided. In the image processing apparatus, a video decoder extracts a digital type first signal having brightness and color components of a×b pixels from an analog type image input signal and then outputs the first signal. A data extraction unit extracts the brightness and color components of c×d pixels (where c≦a, d≦b, and c×d indicates an active size) from the first signal and then stores a second signal having the extracted components. A scaling unit scales in horizontal and vertical directions the components included in the stored second signal in response to first and second predetermined ratios, respectively, and then outputs the scaled results.

Abstract: An interpolation interval Vdp obtained by the picture sizes of the original picture and the converted picture is cumulated by an adder. In the odd field, a selector selects [0.5] as an offset corresponding to an odd/even field determination signal. In the even field, the selector selects [0] as an offset corresponding to the odd/even field determination signal. In a vertical blanking interval, the offset is selected as an output. Thus, in the odd field, the offset value [0.5] is added to the cumulated value of Vdp. Thereafter, Vdp is cumulated again. Corresponding to the cumulated value, a line read address n and linear interpolating coefficients qn1 and qn2 are obtained. When Vdp is cumulated, offsets corresponding to the scanning start points in the odd field and the even field are added. Thus, the interlace accuracy is kept.

Abstract: An analog/digital color video apparatus for adjusting attributes of a color image contained in an analog video signal and a digital video signal and visually displaying an attribute-adjusted color image on a display is provided. When an attribute of an analog video signal having a relatively lower definition is adjusted, the analog/digital color video apparatus converts the analog video signal into a digital signal and adjusts the attribute of the digitized video signal. When an attribute of the digital video signal having a relatively higher definition is adjusted, an attribute of a color image contained in the digital video signal is adjusted without a supplementary signal conversion process such as A/D conversion and D/A conversion. Thus, the analog/digital TV prevents quantization noise which can be occurred in the process of adjusting attributes of the color image.

  • Patent number: 6122012
Abstract: A method of selective color control of a digital video image, using a digital technique. The method features using simple Look-Up-Tables (LUTs), whose values are calculated from uniquely defined color control functions, to digitally change the saturation of a single color of the chromatic part of a video image without affecting saturations of the remaining colors of the chromatic part of the same video image. A digital video input image is scanned, row by row, pixel by pixel. Each input image pixel value, defined from the chromatic part of the video input image, is assigned an address to be operated on by values in individual color LUTs. For a desired change in an individual color of that image, a new digital video output image is produced featuring the desired change in the individual color without affecting the remaining colors of that same image. Application of this method to video images precludes the need to convert video components (e.g., YCrCb) into RGB (red, green, blue) components.

  • Patent number: 6061098
Abstract: The circuit simultaneously filters and decimates a video signal formed with samples for luminance and chrominance. A subcircuit provides the samples in distinct sequences with alternate luminance and chrominance values. A filter stage is provided which contains a first adder which is supplied with one of the sequences via a first register. The other terminal of the adder is supplied with the other sequence. A second register can be directly connected to the adder if luminance samples are processed, and via a third register if chrominance samples are processed. The output signal of the second register is combined with the samples of one of the sequences by means of an adder at the output end. In the case of a higher degree of the filter, a number of filter stages are cascaded (connected in series). Where a higher degree of decimation is required, feedback is provided in each filter stage.
