Abstract: A conventional device adjusts the convergence angle of its imaging unit in a manner that the left-and-right face detection areas are at the same coordinates and thus forms a stereo image that will be placed on a display screen during display, but fails to place a subject at an intended stereoscopic position. A stereo image capturing device (1000) detects a face area from a right image, detects a disparity using the left-and-right face areas, and sets the imaging parameters (the subject distance, focal length, stereo base, and convergence angle) to adjust the detected disparity to a disparity enabling the subject to be placed at an intended placement position. This device forms a stereo image having an appropriate stereoscopic effect in which a target subject is placed at an intended stereoscopic position. The device uses only a limited target area for face detection and thus requires less calculation for face detection.

Abstract: A method for acquiring three-dimensional images of objects uses two cameras having acquisition areas that overlap each other. In the course of a calibration method, a group of epipolar lines associated with each other is determined for each of the cameras. A specified random image is projected onto the object to be imaged. For each pixel of the camera, a first environment is determined, an associated first epipolar line is determined, and for the first epipolar line an associated second epipolar line of the second camera is determined. For all pixels of the image of the second camera that are located on the second epipolar line, a second environment congruent to the first environment is determined. The intensity values of the first and the second environments are compared with each other and a measure of agreement is calculated. A spatial position is determined by use of the previously determined transformation.

Abstract: A method and system for forming a three-dimensional image of a three-dimensional scene using a two-dimensional image sensor are disclosed. Formation of a three-dimensional image is enabled by locating a coded aperture in an image field provided by a collector lens, wherein the coded aperture modulates the image field to form a modulated image at the image sensor. The three-dimensional image is reconstructed by deconvolving the modulation code from the image data, thereby enabling high-resolution images to be formed at a plurality of focal ranges.

Abstract: A system and methods is provided for facilitating, monitoring and recording caregiver and patient compliance with established hospital hand hygiene protocols. The system comprises a 3-D imaging and monitoring assembly and an optional intelligent programmable monitor/sanitizer. Three dimensional imagery tracks a caregiver's movements and location while generating a representative image value. Information acquired by the imaging system determines the proximity of a caregiver to the patient and/or contamination source and determines if the sanitizers provided have been utilized and if so, at an appropriate time and distance from the patient per hospital protocol. While being monitored, a representative Avatar based on physical characteristics derived from three dimensional images of the caregiver and patient may be generated so as to maintain anonymity of both unless a violation of institutional protocol occurs which may be forensically recorded in real-time for analysis.
