Abstract: Embodiments described herein provide an MAMR head structure which provides a magnetic recording device equipped with a high density recording magnetic head. Characteristic variations caused by misalignment of a main pole and a STO may be reduced because the STO may be aligned with a position on the main pole where the field intensity is enhanced. The enhanced field intensity may be provided by an angle of inclination ?1 of an inclined surface on which the STO may be formed when compared to an angle of inclination ?2 around the main pole in the region of the ABS. Further embodiments provide a method for producing an MAMR head in which an exposed surface of the main pole has an angle of inclination ?2 which is less than the angle of inclination ?1 for the inclined surface of the main pole where the STO is mounted.

Abstract: A front rail is located near the inflow end of a slider body. The front rail defines a front air bearing surface at a first height from a reference surface of the slider body. A rear rail located near the outflow end of the slider body. The rear rail defines a rear air bearing surface at a second height smaller than the first height from the reference surface. A head element is embedded in the rear air bearing surface. The rear air bearing surface can be distanced from the surface of a recording medium by an amount larger than the distance between the front air bearing surface and the surface of the recording medium. The head element is thus prevented from contact or collision against the recording medium to the utmost even when the head element protrudes out of the rear air bearing surface.

  • Patent number: 6583961
Abstract: An air bearing surface for use on a magnetic read/write head. The air bearing surface provides a stable flight profile while exhibiting exception load/unload characteristics through the use of a plurality of pads providing high pressure areas as well as a central cavity providing a sub-ambient pressure to counter the high pressure areas. The channel is set a predetermined distance from the leading edge of the air bearing, the predetermined distance being greater than with prior art designs. A channel extends from the leading edge to the cavity to allow airflow into the cavity. The channel and the set back of the cavity both act in conjunction to facilitate unloading of the air bearing by preventing excessive sub ambient pressures.

  • Patent number: 6239951
Abstract: An air bearing slider has an air bearing surface with two rails separated by a cavity. The rails are nonsymmetrical about the longitudinal axis. Instead, the width of the active rail is greater at the trailing end than at the leading end, such as by having a hook portion 64 which extends inward at a sharp angle to the longitudinal axis of the slider. The wider hook portion 64 causes an increased flying height sensitivity to underlying disc/wind speed. The nonactive rail has a greater width than the non-hook portion of the active rail, so the slider exhibits slight negative roll. A vibration sensor is attached to the air bearing slider, and the air bearing slider is used in glide testing of discs.

  • Patent number: 6233119
Abstract: A glide head using a slider with an outside active rail is described. In one embodiment, the trailing end of the outside rail extends beyond the trailing end of the inside rail. Thus, during use, the trailing end of the outside rail is closer to the surface of the magnetic disk because of the slope of the glide head's flight. Accordingly, the outside rail is the active rail. The inside rail may be wider than the outside rail to compensate for additional lift created by the greater length of the outside rail. In an alternative embodiment, the trailing end of the outside rail extends beyond the trailing end of the inside rail and there are notches located in the side edges of the rails. The notches do not extend to the forward tapered ends of the rails nor to the trailing ends of the rails. The notches provide additional stability during the slider's flight and decrease the air bearing area of the rails as needed for fly height requirements.

A pair of side pads, and a center pad between the side pads that is disposed substantially on the center axis, are formed on the air bearing surface of the slider. A first central recess having a T-shaped configuration is etched to a first depth, preferably in the range of 5-30 micro-inches with reference to the air bearing surface. A second major recess portion is etched to a second depth in the range of 60-150 micro-inches.
