  • Patent number: 6115218
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for engaging a magnetic tape with a transducer at a read/write zone for achieving consistent head-to-tape coupling throughout the intended recording location, especially at the edges of the tape. The transducer, located on the end face of the rotating transducer carrier, reads and writes arcuate information tracks generally laterally across the tape. The transducer traces a substantially circular transducing path through the read/write zone with the axis of rotation corresponding substantially to the center of the transducing path. A tape support system generally adjacent to the read/write zone positions the tape so that the transducer penetrates into a tape surface along a read/write location.

  • Patent number: 6018442
Abstract: An apparatus having a read/write head for reading and/or writing information on an information carrier which may be in the form of a tape or disc. The head is mounted on a drum which is supported on a shaft which axially rotates the drum so as to move the head relative to the information carrier, which in the case of a tape winds around the drum. The drum is supported in the axial direction by a thrust bearing and in the radial direction by fluid bearings (25) and (26). The thrust bearing has adjoining surfaces of which at least one is made of cemented tungsten carbine, the other possibly being of steel. Thus, there is low friction and low wear. During operation of the apparatus the bearing surfaces remain in contact, thereby forming an electrical coupling to a grounding frame of the apparatus so as to limit static charging of the rotating drum.

  • Patent number: 5991128
Abstract: A tape guide system includes a rotary head drum inclined by a predetermined angle relative to a mechanical chassis of a recording and/or reproducing apparatus on which the head drum is mounted. A guide roller extends essentially vertically relative to the mechanical chassis on a side of the rotary head drum. An inclined guide post is arranged between the rotary head drum and the guide roller along a tape path. The inclined guide post is inclined at a first angle relative to the mechanical chassis. The first angle is a theoretical angle plus an additional offset angle. The offset angle lies in a direction parallel to a tape surface in contact with the side of the rotary head drum. The theoretical angle is derived from predetermined parameters including an inclination angle of the rotary head drum relative to the mechanical chassis and a tape-wrap angle at which tape is wound onto the rotary head drum.

  • Patent number: 5949621
Abstract: The magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus of the present invention performs a fast forward reproduction, a fast backward reproduction, a still picture reproduction and the time-lapse recording. To correct for noise-bar the magnetic heads mounted on an upper drum are deviated from intended tracks depending on a difference in tape running speed between a recording operation and a reproducing operation. This is accomplished by tilting the upper drum about a predetermined pivot point with respect to a lower drum having a lead formed thereon. A preferred reproduced image containing no noise-bar is achieved even for a signal recorded in a narrow track pattern in an extended time recording mode, by correcting a slight separation of the magnetic tape from the lead due to a tilt of the upper drum, caused by tilting the lower drum.
