Abstract: An illumination optical system, an illumination unit, and an image projection apparatus employing the same are provided. The illumination optical system includes a light source irradiating a diverging light, a reflection optical system condensing the diverging light from the light source, and a lens optical system projecting the light condensed by the reflection optical system. The reflection optical system is comprised of an aspherical concave mirror. The lens optical system comprises a condensing lens having a positive refractive power in a central part and a refractive power of the condensing lens being decreased toward a circumferential part. Optical efficiency may be improved even when a light-emitting surface of the light source is relatively large and the light source cannot be regarded as a point light source.

Abstract: A lens assembly for use with a light source and including an inner lens and a light directing portion. The inner lens collects light rays from the light source through a light-collecting face and emits at least a portion of the light rays radially through a series of collimators. The light directing portion may be an outer lens having light-collecting faces and light-distributing faces. The light-collecting faces correspond with the collimators and distribute the light rays through light-distributing faces. The light direction portion may alternatively be an outer reflector. The reflector has a plurality of light-reflecting surfaces, corresponding to the collimators, and configured to reflect the light rays emitted from the collimators.

  • Patent number: 7403691
Abstract: A light guide plate (10) includes a pair of opposite incidence surfaces (101, 103), an emission surface (108) and a bottom surface (109) opposite to the emission surface. A plurality of dots (11) is distributed on the bottom surface, and each dot is shaped as a rectangle or a square with two cutouts formed at two opposite sides thereof respectively. Thus, a clearance between adjacent dots is relatively small. That is, a distribution of the dots is relatively compact, and this ensures that the light guide plate can provide emission of light beams with good uniformity. Furthermore, adjacent rows of dots are offset, and this can avoid bright lines. Thus, the light guide plate can provide improved display quality. Therefore, the light guide plate can be advantageously applied in back light systems of liquid crystal display devices.

Abstract: A compact and efficient optical illumination system featuring planar multi-layered LED light source arrays concentrating their polarized or un-polarized output within a limited angular range. The optical system manipulates light emitted by a planar light emitters such as electrically-interconnected LED chips. Each light emitting region in the array is surrounded by reflecting sidewalls whose output is processed by elevated prismatic films, polarization converting films, or both. The optical interaction between light emitters, reflecting sidewalls, and the elevated prismatic films create overlapping virtual images between emitting regions that contribute to the greater optical uniformity. Practical illumination applications of such uniform light source arrays include compact LCD or DMD video image projectors, as well as general lighting, automotive lighting, and LCD backlighting.
