Patent number: 4964730Abstract: A plasticating extruder screw incorporates two or more screw configurations into a single screw. This is accomplished with two or more parallel channels in which each channel is designed to a different set of materials and performance requirements reflecting the range of the materials to be processed. The extrusion screw in fact represents two or more screws in a single screw in which each performs its function independently of the other. Thus, each channel in this screw differs from the others in critical design parameters such as compression ratio, length and depth of its feed, transition and metering zones. This multiconfigurational design feature may occupy part or the entire length of the extruder as dictated by the specific characteristics of the materials to be processed. A mixing and stabilization zone placed at or near the entrance of the metering zone of the screw provides for melt flow interaction and equilibration between channels.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1988Date of Patent: October 23, 1990Inventors: Bernard G. The inserts may be made from hard metals or ceramics, for example tool steel or tungsten carbide or the like.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 1978Date of Patent: August 5, 1980Assignee: Werner & PfleidererInventors: Wilhelm Seufert, Gerhard Gnadig, Fritz Przybylla, Wolfgang Christen, Albert Grimminger

Patent number: 4213710Abstract: An extruder machine for processing thermoplastic materials such as low density polyethylene, the extruder incorporating a body having a bore therethrough with a rotor or screw journalled therein. The rotor has several successive mixing and pumping sections. The mixing sections on the rotor are multiple flighted defining primary and secondary channels having their discharge and entrances respectively blocked or restricted by annular dam arrangements. The rotor includes a plurality of adjustable dams, arranged across the channels, permitting a variation in the degree of homogenization which may be performed upon the extrudite. The dams may be radially displaceable to vary the distance between the radially outer surface of the dam and the surface of the bore.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 1978Date of Patent: July 22, 1980Assignee: USM CorporationInventors: Peter Hold, Zehev Tadmor, Hans R. Patent number: 4201528Abstract: Fittings for reducing cracking in soap bars including protrusions on the end flight on the worm or auger of a soap plodder to break up the glazed layer of soap formed by the wiping action of the end flight on the soap as it is discharged. The plodder is provided with a cone nozzle and fittings are provided for eliminating the spiral movement of the soap mass and forming a laminated bar by extrusion through aligned slots. The concept of the invention also includes the elimination of the central or the spongy mass of soap and the formation of a harder grain structure for the soap.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1978Date of Patent: May 6, 1980Assignee: Colgate-Palmolive CompanyInventors: Charles F. Patent number: 4181647Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for the extrusion of a thermoplastic material in modified form in which the thermoplastic material is introduced into the barrel of a screw extruder, and is heated and forced through the barrel: the material is passed through valve means which together with the temperature of the material is effective to produce a melt transition in the material at a predetermined point and to thoroughly mix the material; subsequently, the material is forced into a low pressure zone in the barrel where a modifying agent is introduced into the material; the resultant mass is forced out of the low pressure zone, and is passed through a mixing means effective to intensify the dispersion of the modifying agent in the mass, the mass is extruded and the extruded material collected.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 1976Date of Patent: January 1, 1980Assignee: Phillips Cables LimitedInventor: Shirley Beach

Patent number: 4171196Abstract: An improved screw-type extruder intended to increase the output obtainable from a machine of certain dimensions while maintaining a satisfactory quality of the material extruded. This result is obtained by providing in the homogenization zone a thread crossed by a multitude of narrow passages, and in the feed zone means for overfeeding the plasticizing zone. These overfeeding means may, for example, consist in providing in this zone a cylinder grooved longitudinally or spirally or a double-screw section producing a forced pushing of the material toward the plasticizing zone.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1978Date of Patent: October 16, 1979Assignee: Maillefer S.A.Inventor: Charles Maillefer

Patent number: 4140400Abstract: An extruder comprising a cylindrical extruder housing and an extruder screw extending inside the housing to define an intake section, a mixer section, and a discharge section, the screw having a basic flight which extends in an uninterrupted helix from the intake section, through a mixer section to the discharge section and the basic flight is of one diameter in the intake and discharge sections so as to be a running fit in the housing but have a diameter in the mixer section less than the one diameter so as to define in use a clearance fit in the housing and, in the mixer section, a flow advancer and diverter between appearances of the basic flight which over at least the greater part of its length is of the one diameter so as also to be a running fit in the housing so that material fed to the mixer section is caused, in the mixer section, to pass over the basic flight.Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 1977Date of Patent: February 20, 1979Assignee: Francis Shaw & CompanyInventor: John G.
