  • Patent number: 8270341
Abstract: A method for multi-hop data transmission in an ad-hoc network comprising concealed nodes. A source node determines the probability of a collision-free transmission of data to the following nodes and if a high probability of collision-free transmission is present, transmits a data packet to a following node without coordinating transmission-channel allocation with concealed nodes disposed in the vicinity of the next node.

  • Patent number: 8265660
Abstract: Methods are described for handling an incoming call at a mobile switching center when the mobile station is currently in either an access state (in the process of making an outgoing call) or in a paging state (in the process of receiving an earlier incoming call). The mobile switching center waits until the mobile station transitions out of the access state or paging state into a traffic state. The mobile switching center sends an alert message to the mobile station alerting the user of the new incoming call. The mobile switching center handles the incoming call per a response to the alert message. One option would be to send the new incoming call to the user and drop the other incoming call (or the outgoing call). Another option would be to direct the incoming call to voice mail. In either case, the handling of the incoming call is per the user's direction, i.e., as dictated by the response message.

  • Patent number: 8254937
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for a femtocell to reduce interference with an overlapping macrocell. The femtocell determines soft-frequency-reuse (“SFR”) information of the macrocell. From that information, the femtocell determines which frequency sub-channels are assigned by the macrocell for its cell-center users and which frequency sub-channels are assigned for cell-edge users. (Cell-edge users are given a higher transmission power profile in order to overcome potential interference with neighboring macrocells.) Then, the femtocell selects from the cell-center user frequency sub-channels for transmission to the femtocell's users. By transmitting on the cell-center user frequency sub-channels, the femtocell reduces interference with the overlapping macrocell. The femtocell continues to update its knowledge of the macrocell's SFR information and re-assigns frequency sub-channels as the SFR changes.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a system and method for downlink beamforming that takes into account imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter when determining the steering vector used in the beamforming process. The steering vector is calculated to increase the ratio of the average power of a desired signal component to the sum of the interference power of other wireless terminals, referred to as the signal-to-leakage ratio. By accounting for imperfect CSI when calculating the steering vector, the bit-error rate for a given signal-to-noise ratio is decreased. Also disclosed is a power allocation method that improves performance of the system by increasing the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio for all of the wireless terminals currently communicating with the base station. The power allocation similarly decreases the bit-error rate for a given signal-to-noise ratio, especially at high signal-to-noise ratios.

Abstract: Apparatus (48), and an associated method, for facilitating operation of a mobile node (12) operable in a communication system (10) to request allocation of communication capacity upon which to communicate data pursuant to a communication service. A channel allocation request generator (52) is selectably operable to generate requests for allocation of channel capacity upon which to communicate the data. A selector (54) selects when to cause the generator (52) to communicate the additional data packets. Selection is made to delay, or otherwise prevent, retransmission of requests, when a determination is made that the retransmission is unlikely to be successful.

  • Patent number: 8045502
Abstract: In a communication network (100), a method (400) of reserving X slots (610) for transmitting data from a source device (110A) to a destination device (110D) via multi-hop relay includes sending a first hop reservation request from the source device (110A) to a second device (110), for transmitting data from the source device to the destination device. The first hop reservation request identifies the source device, the destination device, and X proposed slots (610) to be reserved for the first hop. The source device then receives a first message, addressed to the source device from the second device, indicating that the first hop reservation request is pending and that the X slots proposed by the source device have been reserved by the second device. Later, the source device receives a subsequent message indicating whether a final hop reservation request has been accepted by the destination device.

  • Patent number: 8040857
Abstract: A distributed multi-channel TDMA MAC time slot and channel allocation algorithm for wireless networks is provided. The time slot and channel allocation includes a distributed allocation phase and an allocation adjustment phase. Each phase begins allocation at a first node and continues node-by-node until the last node in the network. The allocation then reflects back from the last node to the first node. At each node in the path, the node can initiate resource allocation between itself and its neighbor nodes. Nodes that are within range of the wireless network but are not on the path do not initiate resource allocation but instead participate in the resource allocation initiated from other nodes.
