  • Patent number: 7751778
Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed for improving data transmission rates in a wireless communication system. An example method may be implemented in a wireless communication system including a plurality of base stations defining a plurality of wireless coverage areas in which a mobile station can engage in radio frequency (RF) communication with the base stations where the method includes determining a location of the mobile station. Based on the determined location of the mobile station, the method further includes determining whether activating an inactive signal repeater would increase a rate at which data is able to be communicated from the base stations to the mobile station. In the event that that it is determined that activating the signal repeater would increase the rate at which data is able to be communicated, the method still further includes activating the signal repeater.

  • Patent number: 7701910
Abstract: A reference signal including a quality indication is injected into the reverse link signal received at a base station. The transmit power of the reference signal is controlled by the base station through reverse link power control, and the base station estimates the reverse link load from the transmit power of the reference signal. As the load increases, the transmit power must increase to overcome interference. The reference signal may be generated by a signal generator within the base station; by a mobile station hardwired to the base station; or by a mobile station proximate the base station, sending the reference signal over the air interface. The reverse link load may be estimated directly from reference signal transmit power, or from the reference signal transmit power minus a minimum reference signal transmit power in the absence of interference.

Abstract: An acknowledged MBMS service in which a procedure for providing retransmissions of incorrectly received data blocks is performed, together with an outer coding of the data blocks to be transmitted to the MBMS MSs. A sequence of data blocks carrying information related to the MBMS service is encoded at a BSS (Base Station Sub-system) of the mobile network by an outer coding unit. After the outer coding, the resulting data block sequence is sent to the MBMS MSs. If a data block of the outer coded sequence is badly received by a number of MBMS MSs, corresponding negative acknowledgements (nacks) are sent by such MSs to the BSS. The MSs also notify the BSS, with a positive acknowledgement, if they succeed in outer code decoding the sequence of the MBMS carrying information data blocks, in spite of possible badly received data blocks.

  • Patent number: 7688776
Abstract: Disclosed embodiments reveal techniques for efficiently allocating time slots in a time-division multiplex (TDM) cycle among multiple channels of varying size, particularly when the channels do not all desire an integer number of time slots. TDM cycles can only allocate an integer number of time slots to each channel. So when at least one channel does not desire an integer number of time slots, then the disclosed embodiments allocate a number of time slots equal to the integer portion to each channel, rolling any fractional remainder over to the next cycle. This cumulative cyclical fractional summing process efficiently allocates time slots among the channels, allowing the average allocation per cycle to approach the true non-integer desired amount over time.

Abstract: A method and system for assigning unique words in an SDMA communication system is disclosed. A base station has a set of available unique words from which to select and assign unique words. The base station prioritizes the unique words by determining which unique words are likely to interfere with adjacent base stations, and setting those words to a low priority. Thus, over time, the base station assigns unique words that have better cross correlation characteristics and improved communication sensitivity. The base station discovers the unique words likely to be used in adjacent base stations by direct communication with adjacent base stations, or by communicating with a central office facility. Alternatively, the base station may be made aware of the unique IDs for adjacent base stations, and use these IDs to determine a set of unique words likely to be used by these adjacent base stations.

  • Patent number: 7499707
Abstract: In FDMA communications between two or more primary radios (41, 42; 141, 142), use is made of a quiescent period in the primary communication. The quiescent period is used by secondary radios (43, 44; 143, 144) to communicate with each other. The quiescent period may be a transmit interrupt (TI) frame, normally provided in a DIIS protocol in order to permit return signaling from a called radio (43, 44). The secondary radios (43, 44) may signal to each other during the TI frame. Alternatively, the quiescent period may be a gap in channel activity, in which case regulated access telegrams (96) are transmitted by either a calling primary device (141), or a “last to call” primary device (141), or a base station (141), the regulated access telegrams determining a reservation window period during which secondary devices (143, 144) may signal to one another.

  • Patent number: 7489651
Abstract: In the case where there is a conflict over a band between communication stations that have reserved the band, the communication stations mediate and avoid the conflict of reservation use with low-load processing. In a wireless communication system, band reservation use is permitted, and a plurality of reservation types are provided according to priority of communication. A communication station that performs reservation use describes a reservation type and a rock-paper-scissors value in a beacon. When there occurs a conflict of reservation use at some area, reservation use having higher priority remains, and a communication station that has performed reservation use having a lower priority moves it to another area. In the case where there is a conflict between reservations having the same priority, the communication apparatuses that have performed reservation use perform control by rock-paper-scissors between themselves, and move the reservation of the apparatus that has lost by the judgment.

  • Patent number: 7480493
Abstract: Spreading code detection methods applying autoregressive spectrum estimation (ARSE) techniques to code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless communication systems allowing the subscriber device to estimate the other users' codes. According to one aspect, ARSE techniques are provided using an augmented Wiener-Hopf solution on a received forward link CDMA signal. The ARSE techniques produce a code spectrum transform yielding a power spectral density versus spreading code index relationship from which the spreading codes in the received forward link signal may be identified. According to another aspect, a reduced rank auto-regression (AR) implementation is provided to produce a code spectrum transform efficiently with improved false code detection rate. With knowledge of other users' spreading codes, interference cancellation can be performed on the forward link of CDMA systems.

  • Patent number: 7471659
Abstract: A system and method for determining 1xEV-DO availability for a packet data call in a wireless device is presented. When the wireless device receives a request to initiate a packet data call, the device determines if it currently has access to a preferred 1xEV-DO channel. The determination can be made by consulting a 1xEV-DO availability list stored in persistent memory on the wireless device. If available, the wireless device originates the packet data call on the 1xEV-DO channel. If the device is using a CDMA system that has 1xEV-DO channels but the availability or usability of those channels are unknown, the device polls the signal strength on the 1xEV-DO channels to determine the best 1xEV-DO channel to use for the packet data call. If no 1xEV-DO channel is available or if none of the available 1xEV-DO channels are usable, then the device originates the packet data call on a CDMA channel.

  • Patent number: 7466685
Abstract: Communication control apparatus provided in nodes forming a telecommunications network includes a transmission timing calculator responsive to the state of the phase of the own node to determine a timing at which the node transmits data. The calculator is responsive to a state variable signal transmitted by a neighboring node and reflecting the phase of the neighboring node to change the state of the phase of the own node in accordance with a time development rule. The calculator monitors a phase difference of the own node against the neighboring node to calculate, based on the difference, the ratio of collision on data transmission timing between the own and neighboring nodes. The stress value corresponding to the collision ratio is stored time-serially. A stress response function value is generated such that the stored stress value causes the time development rule to shift the phase with its value made at random.

  • Patent number: 7457295
Abstract: A spectral reuse transceiver-based communication system conducts communications between a master site and a plurality of remote sites using a selected portion of a communication bandwidth containing a plurality of sub-bandwidth channels. Each remote site transceiver monitors the communication bandwidth for activity on the sub-bandwidth channels, and informs a master site transceiver which sub-bandwidth communication channels are absent communication activity and therefore constitute clear channels. The master site transceiver compiles an aggregate list of clear channels from all the remote sites and then broadcasts the aggregate list to the remote sites. The master site and a remote site then conduct communications therebetween by frequency-hopping and/or orthogonal frequency multiplexing among the clear channels using an a priori known PN sequence.
