Abstract: A data communication network (DCN) having a plurality of network devices coupled to the DCN with at least one of the network devices having a “boot once” connectivity manager processor (CMP). The CMP receives its power over the DCN rather than from the power applied to the network devices. The CMP can execute special operating system code and maintain network connectivity even if the network device itself is powered off, is being booted or is otherwise non-functional. The CMP is also coupled to the network device's memory so that it may respond to out-of-band polling requests for device status information from network management tools. With CMP, network administrators can monitor the boot process of network devices, determine that a network device is non-functional due to power loss and can maintain an accurate inventory status of spare network devices that are stored un-powered in a spares closet.

  • Patent number: 8948186
Abstract: A method of expediting resource negotiation in a modified Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) reduces the number of messages exchanged for resource negotiation, thereby reducing the latencies involved in session setup. The method entails sending an INVITE message having a modified SIP header containing an indication that the originator's terminal seeks a fast session setup. The INVITE message further contains a list of all codecs available at the originator's terminal and how many each type of media component are required. These codecs can be provided in an order of preference. The answerer selects the codecs for the requested media types from the list of available codecs without engaging in a back-and-forth resource negotiation for the codecs. The result is that the session can be set up with fewer messages which provides quicker session setup than in the prior art.

Abstract: In one of many possible embodiments, a system includes a plurality of queues configured to share an amount of bandwidth, the amount of bandwidth being allocated between the queues in accordance with a plurality of queue weighting factors associated with the queues. The system further includes an admission control subsystem configured to dynamically adjust the queue weighting factors when a predefined condition has been satisfied. In certain embodiments, the admission control subsystem is configured to adjust the queue weighting factors based on a ratio of bandwidth provisioned on the plurality of queues. In certain embodiments, each of the queues is associated with a different class of service.

Abstract: A method for supporting communications includes establishing a packet-based audio communication link with a remote device and informing a local computing device of the audio communication link. A message requesting identification of enhanced media capabilities associated with the remote device is received from the local computing device and tunneled in the audio communication link to the remote device. A tunneled response in the audio communication link is received from the remote device and forwarded to the local computing device. The response identifies the enhanced media capabilities associated with the remote device.

  • Patent number: 8848610
Abstract: User plane data is sent between a user device and a network entity within a packet core network via a radio access network. The user device is authenticated to the network entity, and a Security Association between the user device and the network entity is established. The user device is maintained in a connectionless state such that no Security Association is established between the user device and the radio access network, and no data bearer is set up between the user device and said packet core network. With the user device in the connectionless state, uplink and downlink user plane data is sent between the user device and the network entity by including the data within signalling messages on a Non Access Stratum plane.

  • Patent number: 8843132
Abstract: Systems, methods, computer software for providing access to wireless communication services are provided. The invention, in one embodiment, can involve storing a network address on a mobile device and sending a request for network operator data from the mobile device to a mobile virtual network operator server associated with the network address. In response, network operator data is received, and, based on the received network operator data, a network operator is selected. Communications are thereafter conducted using the selected network operator. In some situations, bids are received from multiple network operators for rates at which communication services using each network operator can be obtained. Preferences among the network operators are identified using the received bids, and the preferences are used to select the network operator for the mobile device to use in conducting communications.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for securely registering an association between a computer terminal and a selected one of a plurality of communications terminals in a computer telephony system. An association is established according to a known technique between the identity of the selected communications terminal and the identity of the computer terminal to allow for control of the communications terminal by a user via the computer terminal. An abstract representation of the identity of the communications terminal is; generated and provided to a third party system accessible by the user. The user can then implement control of the selected communications terminal via the third party system whilst not prejudicing the security of the system.

  • Patent number: 8842681
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and system for policy control in a data packet network comprising a user equipment, a gateway and a home policy control node. The method comprises the steps of establishing a session between the user equipment and an application function. Then a session identifier is generated by the user equipment, and the same session identifier is generated by the home policy control node. The user equipment requests bearer establishment from the data packet network and marks bearer establishment packets with said session identifier. The gateway derives a user equipment identifier from the bearer establishment packets and determines policy decisions based on the session identifier and the user equipment identifier. The user equipment marks data packets sent over the established bearer with the session identifier; and the gateway applies policy and charging information for the session to the marked data packets.

  • Patent number: 8824479
Abstract: Method and apparatus in a user terminal (200) for controlling the admission of outgoing communications. One or more communication admission rules (206a) are created locally in a communication admission controller (206) in the terminal, according to configuring input commands dictating when outgoing communications should be admitted or rejected. When an input unit (202) receives an input request from a current terminal user for an outgoing communication, the communication admission rules are checked. A communication request unit (210) sends a communication request message towards a used communication services network if the requested outgoing communication can be admitted according to the communication admission rules. Otherwise, a reject message is provided to the current terminal user.
