Abstract: Methods and apparatus for efficiently servicing isochronous streams (such as media data streams) associated with a network. In one embodiment, an Isochronous Cycle Manager (ICM), receives multiple independent streams of packets that include isochronous packets arriving according to different time bases (e.g., where each stream has a different time base). The packets are sorted by the ICM into a buffering mechanism according to their required presentation time. Additionally the ICM calculates a launch time for each packet. The NIC transmits the packets from the queue according to an access scheme, such as a time division multiplexed (TDM) scheme where each of a plurality of cycles is subdivided into time slots. During appropriate time slots, the NIC transmits the packets in chronological order, as read out of the buffering mechanism.

Abstract: A network system includes a first device and a second device separated by a network having asymmetric routes in which traffic forwarded in a first direction from the first device to the second device may travel a different route than traffic forwarded in a second direction from the second device to the first device. At least three intermediate processing devices are located between the first device and the second device, wherein at least two of the intermediate processing devices are located along different asymmetric routes. The intermediate processing devices intercept a communication flow between the first device and the second device, and encapsulate the communication flow within network tunnels so that communications associated with the communication flow in the first direction and the second direction are forwarded between a same set of at least two of the intermediate processing devices.

  • Patent number: 7630382
Abstract: A system for managing circuit emulation service over an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network is provided. The system includes control logic configured to receive channelized circuit data from a client, the channelized circuit data being transmitted at an arbitrary rate. The channelized circuit data is formatted into one or more ATM cells. Each ATM cell has a payload. The payload has a number of octets and corresponding validity fields. Each validity field is used to indicate whether the associated octet contains valid data. The one or more ATM cells are transmitted across the ATM network. By examining the validity fields, the transmission of the one or more ATM cells effectively results in transmission of the channelized circuit data at the arbitrary rate over the ATM network. The arbitrary rate is not a multiple of a fundamental rate.

  • Patent number: 7616580
Abstract: A device and method are disclosed for correctly restoring a read clock when there are a plurality of STM data stream transmission sources. In a CES device of an ATM communication system, ATM cells from respective connections, which are to be delivered to the same outgoing line, are accumulated in a reassembly buffer memory and a PLO control unit aggregates the amount of ATM cells accumulated in the reassembly buffer memory for each connection. Subsequently, the PLO control unit calculates the frequency of a read clock based on the amount of accumulated ATM cells for each connection. A PLO restores the read clock which is applied to read data from the reassembly buffer memory for delivery to an STM network.

  • Patent number: 7607154
Abstract: The streams from a plurality of VBR coders or generic data sources (31) are multiplexed to a single stream by a multiplexer (32), while inserting null packets to make their bit-rates uniform. A null-packet eliminator (60) removes the null packets from the stream, while signaling their positions, and inputs the stream to an ACM modulator (62) which codes the stream with the maximum ruggedness allowed by the rate of the incoming useful packets, and transmits the stream over a satellite channel. In the receiving station, the stream is demodulated by an ACM demodulator (64), and the null packets are re-inserted into the stream by a re-inserter (66), based on the received signaling. A bit-rate control circuit (72) receives from the transmitting station, over a return channel, a signaling of the quality of the received signal (QoS) and modifies the bit-rate of the VBR coders or generic data sources (31) accordingly.

  • Patent number: 7558272
Abstract: The present invention is a system and a method which enables implementing a scalable, carrier class bundling multiplexed data communication on low rate links. The proposed system and method, which comply with the data transference specifications of both CBR and statistical traffic, offer a data bundling solution with minimal overhead that may operate on different types of connections, using links with diverse capacities. The disclosed bundling mechanism is based on a two level mechanism: the lower level is composed of any number of superlinks, each gathering 8 communication links. The upper level is composed of two bundlers—for CBR data and for statistical traffic—each connected to all the superlinks. The header of each dataframe includes all the required information. This guarantees that the receiving side has full status information for all the links suffice that only one link is received without a CRC error.

  • Patent number: 7545808
Abstract: A network device switches variable length data units from a source to a destination in a network. An input port receives the variable length data unit and a divider divides the variable length data unit into uniform length data units for temporary storage in the network device. A distributed memory includes a plurality of physically separated memory banks addressable using a single virtual address space and an input switch streams the uniform length data units across the memory banks based on the virtual address space. The network device further includes an output switch for extracting the uniform length data units from the distributed memory by using addresses of the uniform length data units within the virtual address space. The output switch reassembles the uniform length data units to reconstruct the variable length data unit. An output port receives the variable length data unit and transfers the variable length data unit to the destination.

Abstract: One aspect of the invention provides an ingress apparatus comprising a signal processing apparatus for receiving an incoming data frame and locating the position of path overhead, and a monitoring apparatus arranged to extract information from the located path overhead. The ingress apparatus further includes an insertion apparatus for receiving, from the monitoring apparatus, information extracted from the path overhead of one or more signal path, and being further arranged to insert the extracted information into a respective data frame component which occupies a fixed position in a data frame. Thus, information which would normally occupy a non-fixed position in a data frame is moved to a fixed position. As a result, the information can subsequently be accessed without having to employ relatively complex apparatus for locating information which occupies a non-fixed position.
