Patent number: 6282265Abstract: A two-ended, line-driving and receiving/tone signal analysis system performs line connection verification applying a low-distortion, low-amplitude test signal to one end of a cable pair under test and monitoring the response of a remote end wireline pair. Preferably the test signal frequency is on the order of 110 Hz, which avoids domestic and foreign AC power signal frequencies and is spectrally equidistant from their harmonics. It also avoids ringing frequencies for POTS lines, and remains safely below the 350 Hz lower limit of POTS and other telephone line system services. In response to application of the 110 Hz test signal to tip and ring segments of a wireline pair at one end of the cable bundle, the energy of the 110 Hz component, as well as that of two other ‘spectrally nearby’ (slightly higher at 112 Hz and slightly lower at 108 Hz), are measured at a tip and ring pair at the far end of the cable plant.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2000Date of Patent: August 28, 2001Assignee: Harris CorporationInventors: Alan B. Patent number: 6282266Abstract: A system in accordance with the invention dynamically establishes test connections upon initiation of a test sequence and does not need to maintain permanently “nailed up” test connections. To do so, each node in the system, e.g., COT, RT, maintains a logical bypass pair terminator (“BT”). The BT includes facilities which reserve the requisite channels that will be needed to establish a test connection. When a test sequence is initiated for testing a drop from an RT, a BT facility at the RT will establish a connection to an RT bypass card and a BT facility at the COT will establish a connection to a COT bypass card, thereby completing the test connection.Type: GrantFiled: December 24, 1997Date of Patent: August 28, 2001Assignee: Alcatel USA Sourcing, L.P.Inventors: John Przyblyski, Thomas Riekert, Rebeca Marthinsen

Patent number: 6256490Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for providing a cell traffic supervision alarm within a base station (BS) to notify the operator at a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) serving the BS that the BS has had no traffic for a period of time that is unreasonably long. The definition of “unreasonably long” is tied to normal traffic patterns at the BS. An alarm threshold time, which is defined as time between the cessation of all traffic on a BS and the triggering of the alarm, can be calculated based upon a statistical analysis of the traffic history of the BS to determine a time interval such that the probability is acceptably small that under normal conditions the BS would have gone for that entire length of time with no traffic at all. At the expiration of the alarm threshold time, the alarm is activated.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1998Date of Patent: July 3, 2001Assignee: Ericsson Inc.Inventors: George P. Patent number: 6084947Abstract: A signal detector 100 and method detects digital signals on a signal path 102. The signal detector 100 comprises a sample detector 108 which detects digital code samples for past sample periods and the instant sample period. Past digital code samples are stored in a sample storage 114. Past digital code samples and the instant digital code sample are compared by a comparator 112. If the samples are equal, the signal path 102 is idle. If the samples are unequal, the signal path 102 is in use. It is contemplated that the past digital code sample substantially immediately preceding the instant digital code sample will be compared to the instant digital code sample.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 1996Date of Patent: July 4, 2000Assignee: Rockwell International CorporationInventors: David W. Patent number: 5937032Abstract: A method and apparatus for testing for correct connection together of circuit elements in a circuit formed of a plurality of redundant circuit portions. A coded signal is generated at a first circuit element and transmitted upon a signal path believed to connect the first circuit element with a second circuit element. If the coded signal is detected at the second circuit element, the correct connection of the first circuit element together with the second circuit element is verified. Because a coded signal is generated, the correct connection between the circuit elements can be verified even when the signal path connecting the first and second circuit elements is formed of an optical, or other non-electrical, coupler.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1995Date of Patent: August 10, 1999Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L MInventors: Arto Juhani Nummelin, Peter Carl Birger Lundh, Erik Oscar Abefelt, Karl Anders Bjenne

Patent number: 5930334Abstract: In a telecommunications system, the amount of time a subscriber device is effectively out of service as a result of some fault or failure in telecommunications equipment is monitored. Subscriber devices are connected by corresponding subscriber communication paths to receive information from or transmit information to a telecommunications center such as a local telephone exchange. One or more data records is maintained in computer memory for each subscriber path connected to the communications center. Each data record is updated using recently determined data relating to the operational status of each subscriber path. The computer then determines from the updated record in accordance with one or more subscriber line blocking criteria a subscriber path blocking parameter. The subscriber path blocking parameter may represent for example an average amount of time each subscriber path satisfies the one or more subscriber line blocking criteria.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1997Date of Patent: July 27, 1999Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM EricssonInventors: Richard Lundberg, H.ang.kan Omnell, Tomas Kostenius, Gunnar Hallgren

Patent number: 5867558Abstract: A method for monitoring the signaling network in a telecommunication system comprises extending a copy of each signaling message processed by a particular signal transfer point to an interface unit. The interface unit relays "of interest" messages to a signal monitoring system (SMS) in accordance with a pre-determined filtering protocol. In the SMS, messages are correlated in accordance with a pre-defined correlating protocol. The correlated signaling messages are subsequently retrieved by an OSS technician for analysis and updates.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 1997Date of Patent: February 2, 1999Assignee: AT&T Corp.Inventor: Robert Allen Swanson

Patent number: 5727057Abstract: A method and system implementation for combining and accessing telephony numbering and geographical position so direct access to information, services and goods may be invoked through the use of various telephone networks. The existing telephone networks throughout North America and the world use standardized numbering plans for connecting to, or switching any subtended device to any other device within the network. The U.S. government has orbited a series of communication satellites which provide a signaling method for determining precise geographical location throughout the world. This system is called the Global Positioning System (GPS) and provides several levels of service. Each GPS satellite continually transmits a navigation location signal which may be received on the ground, sea, or in the air and when combined with signals from other GPS satellites used to pinpoint navigational position in two or three dimensions.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1994Date of Patent: March 10, 1998Assignee: AG Communication Systems CorporationInventors: Mark Emery, Zaman Gulzar
