  • Patent number: 8242651
Abstract: A lubrication system for an electrodynamic machine including therein an internal oil sump and at least one oil ring hydrodynamic bearing, wherein the oil ring is in fluid communication with oil, in the sump and replenishes oil in the bearing. The lubrication system includes an electrically powered oil sump pump that is oriented within the sump. An of intake is coupled to the pump and is in fluid communication with oil in the internal sump. An oil discharge line is coupled to the pump discharge. The distal end of the discharge line is oriented proximal the motor bearing, so that oil discharged therefrom replenishes oil in the bearing and shaft journal interface. The lubrication system oil discharge parameters are independent, of the motor speed, load or physical orientation, and may be varied by a controller coupled to the oil sump pump.

  • Publication number: 20040047526
Abstract: The invention features a bearing housing that employs fewer structural components than traditionally used. In one embodiment, endplates are integrated into the upper and lower housing structures such that essentially only two prefabricated pieces are required to form the bearing housing. Additionally, the integrated endplates house seal assemblies that prevent the ingress and egress of contaminants between the shaft and the bearing housing.

  • Patent number: 5733048
Abstract: A bearing system includes a lubricant circulation apparatus to provide a continuous supply of lubricant fluid to a bearing device. The bearing device may be a hydrodynamic sleeve bearing having a bearing housing defining a sump for maintaining lubricant fluid therein. An oil ring may be situated about the mechanical shaft supported by the bearing device to deposit oil on top of the shaft during rotation. In addition, a bearing inlet is defined at a location radially above the shaft, with a bearing outlet being defined at a location radially below. The bearing outlet is in fluid communication with a reservoir of the lubricant circulation apparatus. A pump communicates with the reservoir to draw lubricant fluid therefrom and deliver it to the bearing inlet. Preferably, the pump draws lubricant fluid from the reservoir at a rate greater than can be passed through the bearing housing.

  • Patent number: 5669717
Abstract: A hydrodynamic sleeve bearing for supporting the shaft of a relatively large electromechanical machine. The bearing includes a base element and a cap element matable about the shaft to produce the bearing housing. The bearing housing when assembled includes a shaft receiving portion through which the shaft extends and a sump portion for containing a lubricant fluid. The design of the present invention minimizes the axial length of the shaft receiving portion to approximately that of the bearing liner contained therein. As a result, the weight of the cap element will be significantly reduced over many prior art constructions. Respective lubricant seals are attached at opposite end faces of the shaft receiving portion. The lubricant seals and the end faces are configured to permit lubricant fluid to flow directly back into the sump. The lubricant seals may be installed in a plurality of angular orientations, which may be particularly useful if a selected sensor device is installed thereon.

  • Patent number: 5205384
Abstract: The damper arrangement is operated in high temperature applications, such as load and speed environments such as found in turboengines. The damper arrangement includes damper pads which are laterally urged against damping elements forming a shearing zone therebetween. The shearing zone is lubricated with solid dry powder lubricant. The damper pads include a circumferential wave or a multi-partial arc configuration formed by radial slots with inwardly tapering radial bevels and lateral bevels adjacent to the radial slots to enhance the circulation of the powder lubricant in response to nutating motion between the damper pad and the damper element.

  • Patent number: 5199797
Abstract: An oil ring guide system comprises a shaft mounted for rotation in either of two directions. Bearings support the shaft at two spaced-apart locations. Each bearing is formed with a pair of slots. A reservoir is mounted below each bearing. An oil ring is received in each of the four slots. Each oil ring is supported by and encircles the shaft and dips into the reservoir, whereby rotation of the shaft in either direction causes rotation of the oil rings in the same direction so that the oil rings carry oil from the reservoir into the bearing for lubrication thereof. Eight guide rods extend through the upper portion of the bearings. One pair of guide rods is displaced about the shaft axis 45.degree. in a clockwise direction from the vertical. The pair of guide rods associated with the other oil ring of the same bearing is displaced about the shaft axis 45.degree. counterclockwise from the vertical.

  • Patent number: 4674894
Abstract: A bearing lubrication device for use in ring-oiled journal bearings and the like in which a generally circular ring member is eccentrically disposed around the rotatable shaft in the bearing assembly. The ring has an outer surface, right and left sides extending downwardly from the outer surface at a predetermined angle, most preferably about 30 degrees, for a predetermined distance and then radially inwardly, generally perpendicular to the outer surface for a predetermined distance, and an inner surface, said inner surface having at least one, but preferably a plurality of grooves therein. As rotation occurs at high forward speeds, improved lubricant delivery, stability of operation and bearing performance capability are realized.

  • Patent number: 4597679
Abstract: A shaft is rotatably journalled in a bearing assembly. The shaft has a sleeve fixed thereon at a location axially adjacent to the bearing assembly, and a ring depends from the sleeve into a supply of liquid lubricant contained in an underlying sump. Rotation of the shaft and sleeve causes the ring to rotate about its own axis, and the rotating ring carries lubricant upwardly from the sump, with the thus carried liquid ultimately being returned to the sump by a combination of centrifugal and gravitational forces. A dam is interposed between the underside of the sleeve and the ring depending therefrom to direct a substantial and continuous flow of the returning lubricant to the bearing assembly.
