Abstract: In a sealing device for a bearing, a sub-seal lip is configured such that a slide contact surface is formed like an annular band. As the rotation speed of the bearing increases, the width of the slide contact surface is reduced by a centrifugal force. Thus, sliding friction can effectively be minimized. The torque of the bearing can be prevented from increasing at high-speed rotation. Even when the centrifugal force increases somewhat, only reduction in the width of the slide contact surface is caused. Thus, a slide-contacted state can be maintained. By retaining the lubrication, bearing life is extended, dramatically reducing machine downtime. In the presently preferred embodiment, the combination of a guide wheel with two rubber spring return (RSR) seals in-bound of two shields, increases guide wheel life through the following: The shields prevent the direct force of a high pressure wash-down from reaching the seal directly. There is a non-direct path between the shield and the outer raceway of the guide wheel to allow any trapped liquid to seep back out of the guide wheel. Also, as the guide wheel rotates, any liquid between the shield and seal is spun-out by centrifugal force.

Abstract: A structure of a water pump is provided without increasing the cost thereof, or without enlarging the size to improve the durability of the water pump. A seal apparatus having a seal ring 13 and a slinger 14 in combination to prevent foreign matter from progressing into the rolling bearing 6a. The amount of compression &dgr; of the second seal lip 23, which occurs when the tip edge of the second seal lip 23 of the seal ring 13 comes in contact with the outer peripheral surface of the outer-diameter-side cylindrical section 26 that is formed at the outer peripheral edge of the slinger 14, is at least {fraction (1/10)} and up to {fraction (7/10)} the height of the second seal lip 23 in the free state. In addition, the roughness of a portion of the outer peripheral surface of the outer-diameter-side cylindrical section 26 which the tip edge of the second seal lip 23 comes in sliding contact with is from 0.2 &mgr;m to 2.0 &mgr;m in the arithmetic mean Ra, or is from 0.8 &mgr;m to 8.

Abstract: When an inner race 12 rotates at a speed lower than a predetermined speed, a sealing body 27 contacts the sealing face part 21c, but when the inner race 12 rotates at a speed more than the predetermined speed, a contacting pressure to a sealing face part 21c is reduced or the sealing body 27 is isolated so as to form a non-contacting seal, and therefore, for example, at the low speed, the sealing body 27 forms a contacting seal, thereby to compensate a low speed-low sealing ability of the non-contacting seal such as the labyrinth seal, and on the other hand, at high speed rotation, the sealing body 27 reduces the contacting pressure to the sealing face part 21c, otherwise separates therefrom to form the non-contacting seal as the labyrinth seal, whereby it is possible to solve the problem of heating or abrasion at the contacting part.

Abstract: A steering knuckle is supported on a road wheel of an automotive vehicle by a hub assembly which includes a housing fitted into a bore in the knuckle and hub having a flange to which the road wheel is attached and also a spindle which projects from the flange into the housing. The bearing has cones which fit over the spindle between a shoulder on the hub flange and an integrally formed abutment on the other end of the spindle. The ends of the bearing contain seals which exclude contaminants from the interior of the bearing. A slinger is fitted to the spindle and may be captured between the cone at the inboard end of the bearing and the abutment. The slinger extends outwardly past the spindle abutment and seal at the inboard end of the bearing and has a circular peripheral edge which lies close to the surface of the bore in the steering knuckle, thus providing an additional barrier to exclude contaminants from the bearing.
