Abstract: The media player employs an operating system that supports a virtual machine into which auto-run playback programs may be loaded and run. The auto run playback program is stored on the media containing the program content, such as on an optical disc medium. When the medium is inserted in the player, the auto run playback program automatically launches and is thereafter used to access playback the media content. Support for legacy media is provided to allow the player to playback compact discs and DVD discs that were manufactured without the auto run playback program.

  • Patent number: 8260115
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of copy protecting optical discs, such as CDs or DVDs. Instead of encoding data onto the CD-ROMs in a conventional manner which ensures balanced dc content, for copy protection the digital data is encoded and recorded onto the optical disc such that it is arranged to give some of the recorded digital data highly unbalanced dc content. Thus, for example, the DSV (digital sum value) value of the encoded data is recorded so that the DSV value changes continuously once 50 frames of data or more.

Abstract: A data file reproduction system has a data file supplying apparatus that extracts video data and audio data from a received data file, compresses the extracted video and audio data and produces a compressed data file containing the compressed audio and video data together with meta or navigation data determined from the data file for enabling navigation of the original data file. The compressed data file is then copy-protected. Upon request, the copy-protected compressed data file is communicated to a reproduction apparatus which decompresses the compressed audio and video data of the received copy-protected compressed data file, encodes the decompressed audio and video data and produces a copy-protected reconstituted data file containing the encoded audio and video data together with the meta or navigation data determined from the copy-protected compressed data file, so enabling navigation of the copy-protected reconstituted data file, the same as the original data file.

Abstract: Recording data for an optical disc such as a DVD has video content data and navigation data. Button data defines one or more user-selectable selection buttons to enable a viewer to select content data when the recording medium is played. Further button data defines at least one phantom button that is not selectable by a viewer because, for example, it is not visually distinguishable, it is hidden within the video data or it is displayed for a short period of time. • Patent number: 8144560
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for preventing interchange of a first optical information carrier (1) with a second optical information carrier in an optical drive. Initially, the light (5) is focused at the first optical information carrier (1) in the optical apparatus followed by the steps of detecting reflected light (8) from the first optical information carrier (1) and generating a plurality of signals (CA, RF, FE) from the detected light (8), such as a focus error signal (FE). Upon obtaining an indication of a signal, e.g. the focus error signal (FE), is absent or reduced below a certain level, there is a step of assessing if the first optical information carrier (1) has been removed from the optical drive. If removed, reproduction of information by the optical drive is made impossible until some pre-determined measures have been taken, e.g. restart of the optical drive or other measures.

Abstract: An apparatus includes an input circuit, a storage device, a retrieve circuit, a decrypt circuit, and an output circuit. The input circuit is configured to receive packets of encrypted encoded video data from a first network. The storage device is preauthorized by the first network to store the encrypted encoded video data. The retrieve circuit is configured to retrieve the encrypted encoded video data from the storage device for decryption. The decrypt circuit is configured to decrypt the encrypted encoded video data without further authorization. The output circuit is configured to transmit a signal representing the encrypted encoded video data while the retrieve circuit retrieves the encrypted encoded video data from the storage device.

Abstract: An editing apparatus wherein the editing of content is controlled according to its supply source. Identification information for identifying a content supply source is recorded in a recording medium in correspondence with the content supplied from the content supply source and recorded in the recording medium. When editing of the content is requested by a user, the identification information corresponding to that contend is checked. According to the content supply source identified by the identification information, the editing of the content is enabled or disabled.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a content playback apparatus includes a read module which reads information that is recorded in a recording medium, a clock module which is managed such that tampering is prevented, and a control module which controls the read module and the clock module. Content information and time management information is recorded in the recording medium. The time management information includes date/time recording information indicative of a date/time at which previous playback of the content information is stopped, playback allowable period information, start date/time information of a playback allowable period and end date/time information of the playback allowable period. The control module includes a time management module which corrects the start date/time information of the playback allowable period and the end date/time information of the playback allowable period, with use of time information which is acquired from the clock module.

  • Patent number: 8116610
Abstract: New movies from content providers are often made available on the Internet before being launched in the cinemas. Pre-released movies like DVD Videos for journalists are the main reason for this situation because some journalists seem to make these movies available to the Internet users. However, this causes significant harm to the content providers. According to the invention, the pre-releases are still DVD Videos or other conventional video formats but the playback of such encoded video signal is not possible using only a conventional DVD player or DVD player software because the playback requires additional hardware. An additional box (CP splitter box) splits the original video signal into two different video signals to be projected using two different beamers (A, B) which both are required for generating the whole video content. The beamers have different locations each with a different angle to the silver screen, and each beamer generates only a part of the video.

Abstract: Generally the more effective is the copy protection provided on an optical disc, such as a DVD, the greater is the likelihood that the copy protection will adversely interfere with legitimate uses of the optical disc. It is therefore proposed to include at least one region of subversive data within the content in the data area of an optical disc, and then to prevent access to each such region of subversive data during normal playback of the disc. For a DVD, the subversive data may be incorporated within video objects and/or may be in gaps between files in the DVD_Video zone. It is arranged that there are no navigable paths to the regions of subversive data.

Abstract: Functionality and control of the media module using a method and apparatus for access and compatibility control is disclosed. The media module interfaces with a camera or other device to store image and audio data from the camera on memory. Access to the media module is controlled by method and system for data encryption or authentication. Encryption or authentication controls access and compatibility with particular camera, camera line, or camera manufacture. The encryption or authentication may also control access to features or functions of the media module. An authentication module comprising an input/output controller, processor and memory processes an authentication request or command to determine if the media module and camera are compatible. The processor may execute software stored on the memory to perform any type of authentication including a hash operation, symmetric key operation, or asymmetric key operation.

Abstract: A anti-copy programme signal is provided. Copies of the anti-copy video pulses made on a video recorder experience reduced quality and interference in playback making them unpleasant to watch. The uncopied signal can be viewed without any material effect on picture quality. The signal comprises a pulse added to each line of the signal throughout both the visible picture region and throughout the vertical blanking region, as well as a first modulated wave-form added to the vertical synchronization pulses of the signal and a second modulated wave-form added to several lines of the picture signal before the vertical blanking section. The presence of all three of these features together has been found to provide a surprising accumulative effectiveness in causing interference in the reproduction of the modified video signal during playback of the copied video signal, that is greater than the effectiveness provided by the different features taken separately.

Abstract: To provide an apparatus, a recording medium and a method for effectively preventing unauthorized use of a content. A content containing broken data different from correct content member data is recorded on an information recording medium. Furthermore, transform data, as the correct member data, to be substituted for the broken data, and a fix-up table storing setting position information of the content are recorded on the information recording medium. During the content playback process, the transform data is substituted for the content member data in accordance with the fix-up table recorded on the information recording medium. With this arrangement, even if the encryption key corresponding to the encrypted content recorded on the information recording medium is leaked, an apparatus unable to acquire the transform data cannot play back the content. Unauthorized use of the content is thus controlled.
