Abstract: A signal strength corresponding to an incoming optical burst from each of a plurality of optical nodes is measured. The measurements can be performed at system start-up, configuration/installation of the optical nodes and/or at certain intervals of operation of the optical nodes. Signal strength information for the optical nodes based on the measurements is stored in memory. When scheduling the optical nodes for transmission, a preferred transmission order is determined in response to the stored signal strength information. In an embodiment, the preferred order is determined to reduce differences in signal strength levels between consecutive optical bursts.

  • Patent number: 8320758
Abstract: A method for estimating optical power in an optical channel includes determining a tunable filter full-width, FWF, by measuring a response of the tunable filter to a known signal and mapping the response to frequency. A portion of an optical channel is coupled to an input of the tunable optical filter. A peak power response, PR, and a full width tunable filter response, FWR, to the optical channel are determined by measuring a response of the tunable filter to the optical channel and mapping the response to frequency. A signal power, PS, is then calculated from the peak power response, PR, and a ratio of the full width tunable filter response, FWR, to the tunable filter full-width, FWF.

Abstract: A distortion compensation system and method may be used to compensate for data pattern dependent signal distortion in a signal received in a coherent optical signal receiver. In general, the distortion compensation system and method compares a received signal field with stored distorted signal waveforms associated with known data patterns and selects a compensation value associated with the distorted signal waveform that corresponds most closely with the received signal field. The distortion compensation system and method compensates the received signal using the selected compensation value and thus mitigates the effects of data pattern dependent signal distortion.

  • Patent number: 8306426
Abstract: An OCDM communication system and a method for correcting failure of the same are provided. In the system, encoders and decoders are provided respectively for channels. Each encoder, including an SSFBG, encodes an optical signal using a code value determined according to distance between adjacent unit fiber Bragg gratings in the SFFBG. Each decoder, including an SFFBG, generates a received optical signal by decoding the encoded signal using a code value determined in the same manner. A set temperature of each encoder and decoder is calculated and a corresponding control signal is generated based on average power and error rate detection signals of each received optical signal. The temperature of each encoder or decoder is individually adjusted according to the control signal, which makes equal the code values of an encoder and decoder of a channel in which average power of a received signal has changed or error rate thereof is excessive.

  • Patent number: 8290365
Abstract: An optical communication apparatus that includes multiple optically communicative components positioned optically in series. Some of the optically communicative components may be optical fiber segments of perhaps different types. The optical channel represented by the series of optically communicative components and approximates a transfer function of an optical channel of a longer optical fiber. Accordingly, rather than deal with a lengthy optical fiber, an apparatus having a shorter optical channel may be used instead. The construction of the optical communicative components may be calculating an input transfer function. The construction would include an ordering of discrete optically communicative components that, when placed optically in series, simulates an estimation of a particular transfer function. Testing may then occur by actually passing an optical signal through the series construction of optically communicative components, rather than through the longer optical fiber.

Abstract: A transponder having a dynamic remapping circuit remaps a value of decision threshold voltage Vdtc and a value of optical power RXP to a reference voltage Vref to minimize the bit error rate BER of a communication system. The dynamic remapping circuit implements a bilinear mapping of Vdtc and RXP to Vref with three bilinear remapping constants “a”, “b”, and “c” selected to align a remapped value of Vdtc_opt to a selected Vdtc normalization value, Vdtc_norm. A transponder in accord with an embodiment of the invention prevents BER from exceeding a threshold value of BER whether RXP or OSNR, or both, remain constant, change continuously, or change intermittently. Constants “a”, “b”, and “c” are related to parameters resulting from mathematically fitting a line to data comprising Vdtc_opt versus RXP. Abstract: A quantum key distribution system is deployed in an optical fiber network transporting classical data traffic. A source of entangled photon pairs is used to generate quantum keys. Classical data traffic is typically transported over channels in the C-band. If a pair of channels for transport of quantum data is available within the C-band, then the source of entangled photon pairs is tuned to emit in a pair of channels in the C-band. If a pair of channels for transport of quantum data is not available within the C-band, then the source of entangled photon pairs is tuned to emit in a pair of channels in a combined S-band and L-band. When a periodically-poled lithium niobate waveguide pumped with a laser is used for the source of entangled photon pairs, the output spectral properties are tuned by varying the temperature of the waveguide.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for loading, detecting, and monitoring channel-associated signals are provided. Channel-associated signals are identified with spread spectrum codes in the electrical domain, and after being modulated to an optical service signal at respective loading points separately, the channel-associated identification signals are transmitted in the optical channel along with the optical signal. At any downstream detecting point, passing optical signals can be converted through photoelectric conversion, and the channel-associated identification signals are de-spread. By detecting the channel-associated signals, it is possible to learn about whether the upstream loading point work normally, whether the optical channel operates normally, etc., and thereby to find possible failures, solve problems, and monitor quality parameters of optical signals in real time, and improve reliability of the optical signal transmission.

  • Publication number: 20120219288
Abstract: Link bandwidth is varied based on the subscriber traffic load. Varying the link bandwidth has the effect of varying the actual noise margin of the link (in an inverse elation), so that the noise margin will vary inversely with the traffic load. A beneficial result is that, because the noise margin is increased during “off-peak” traffic periods, rapidly varying and burst impairments can be absorbed without causing data loss. In effect, the respective probability distributions of error bursts and traffic load are separated. Data loss only becomes a significant risk when peaks in both distributions coincide. However, the probability of that event occurring is comparatively low. This enables a lower noise margin allocation during design of the link, which dramatically reduces the link cost.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for efficiently utilizing an optical control plane distinct from an electronic control plane to facilitate the setup of paths in a dense wave division multiplexing network are disclosed. According to one aspect of the present invention, a method includes receiving a probe arranged determine the optical feasibility of a first path, and determining a probability of success associated with the probe. The probability of success indicates a likelihood that the probe will be successfully routed on the first path to the destination, and is associated with a particular wavelength. A second path on which to route the probe is dynamically identified if the probability indicates a low likelihood of successful routing on the first path. Finally, the method includes determining if a notification associated with the probe has been received, and altering the probability of success based on the notification if the notification has been received.

  • Patent number: 8126332
Abstract: Described is a method for controlling the wavelength of a laser in a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) system. The method includes generating broadband light having a dithered optical power and a wavelength spectrum that includes a plurality of WDM wavelengths. The broadband light is spectrally filtered to generate a spectrally-sliced optical signal having a wavelength spectrum that includes one of the WDM wavelengths. The spectrally-sliced optical signal is injected into a laser and a dithered optical power of the laser is determined. A parameter of the laser is controlled in response to the determination of the dithered optical power to thereby align a wavelength of the laser to the wavelength spectrum of the spectrally-sliced optical signal.
