Patent number: 5333321Abstract: An environmentally controlled commercial/public toilet designed to neutralize and confine contaminating agents such as bacteria, odors, vapors and other airborne particles inside the bowl by generating and maintaining a cyclone-type air circulation inside the existing bowl. A standard bowl (70a) with a housing (20a), and an air-trapping cavity (76) created inside the bowl (70a) by a detachable bowl-skirt (73a), confines the contaminating agents during toilet use and improves the efficiency of the air circulation. Sanitizer and odor conditioner cartridges are employed to neutralize the contaminating agents by releasing sanitizing and odor conditioning agents into the air flow circulated inside the bowl (70a). This invention is retrofitable to existing commercial/public toilets.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1993Date of Patent: August 2, 1994Inventor: Daniel S. Redford

Patent number: 5292479Abstract: Rotatable circular plates are stacked apart to form thin air layers therebetween. Rotation of the circular plates moves air over an air treatment material: catalyst or adsorbent. In one embodiment, the air treatment material is affixed to the surface of the circular plates. In another embodiment, the circular plates are formed from the air treatment material. The increased velocity of air relative to the circular plates causes separation of laminar flow, promotes boundary-layer turbulence near the plate surfaces, and promotes propagating stall in the air layers. These phenomena enhance the contact between the flowing air and the air treatment material.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1992Date of Patent: March 8, 1994Assignee: Toto Ltd.Inventors: Hisato Haraga, Hajime Miyazaki, Yasuo Hamada, Katsushi Akamatsu, Ayako Hirano

Patent number: 5123124Abstract: A toilet system providing improved convenience, efficiency and sanitation with automatic operation. Basically, the toilet includes a bowl, a seat partially covering the bowl opening and a lid movable between a raised position exposing the seat and a lower position covering the seat and sealing the bowl. When the lid is raised, an air extraction system removes air and odors from the bowl. After use, the lid is either manually or automatically closed, initiating a high or low flush. When left to close automatically a low flush only is initiated. In a low flush, water is directed under pressure through two rotating spray jets against the bowl interior, then is removed along with any toilet contents by the rotating jets action and the macerator which reduces solids to small particles. Heated air is then directed into the bowl to dry the bowl. In a high flush, an additional spray jet cleans the seat and a larger quantity (typically 1/3 additional) of water is used.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1990Date of Patent: June 23, 1992Inventor: Richard Brower

Patent number: 5079783Abstract: A rechargeable self-contained deodorizing toilet seat is provided for installation on any standard toilet to remove bathroom odors. The seat is substantially the same in size and appearance as a standard toilet seat. Air conduits pass though the right and left sides of the seat member from the lower surface to the outer surface. The conduits contain activated carbon air filtration media and blowers for moving the air. Seals on the lower surface seal the seat to the toilet rim except at the front where ducts are provided for the introduction of fresh air. Lips on the inner edges of the ducts deflect air down into the bowl. The blowers are rotated by direct current electric motors powered by rechargeable batteries. Operation of the motors is controlled by switches which close only when the lid is raised and weight is placed on the seat. An electronic timer turns off the air filtration system after a preset period of time to conserve the battery power.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 1991Date of Patent: January 14, 1992Assignee: Chris A. Patent number: 4748698Abstract: A new type of stool cover had an air tight and hollow inside part of its seat-ring, with bottom that is fitted with drafting openings with fittings to plug up the openings. A plug system involves a support, a spring, a plug support, and a filler associated with each draft opening in the bottom of the seat-ring. The plug support and the filler are made of one piece. While the user is sitting on the seat-ring, the plug support moves upward against the spring, in turn moving the filler away from the drafting opening. The drafting openings are then just opened, and draft from their location on top of the stool. The bad smell produced in the stool can thus continually be avoided.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1986Date of Patent: June 7, 1988Inventor: Chun-Hsien Kao
