Patent number: 5286956Abstract: In a printer for passbooks or the like, a passbook or the like, which is brought in on a transfer path, is stopped at the position of a page-turning roller, where a sheet is turned over by the operation of the page-turning roller. When a sheet is turned over by the page-turning roller, at a position separate from a start position of turning over of a sheet, a passbook or the like undergoes an initial deformation in a out-of-plane direction so that the passbook is bent in a first-order mode. By this initial deformation, a sheet can be turned over steadily. Such a turnover of the sheet can be effected in conjunction with utilizing an optical system which provides an image of the three-dimensional deformation pattern of the passbook which is processed. In accordance with this pattern a decision is made whether or not the out-of-plane deformation of the passbook is more than a specified amount. In the vicinity of the transfer path, a page-turning roller is provided and is supported rotatably.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 1991Date of Patent: February 15, 1994Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventor: Akira Mochizuki

Patent number: 4773297Abstract: A page turning device. Ferrous flat plate members are detachably secured to the pages to be turned of a book. A magnet member is carried by an elongate arm member that is pivotally mounted to swing in a plane. In a first embodiment, a spring member under load urges the arm member to swing in its plane to an equilibrium position, carrying a magnetically-engaged flat plate member and hence a page member with it. A stop member maintains the arm member in its nonequilibrium position until the musician desires the page to turn; a latch member is activated to transiently displace the stop member from its stopping engagement with the arm member. The musician thereafter returns the arm member to its first position. In a second embodiment, a motor causes the arm member to swing in its plane, carrying one page with it each time it travels from its first to its second position.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 1987Date of Patent: September 27, 1988Inventor: Wendell Anderson

Patent number: 4691909Abstract: A device for turning over book leaves is disclosed, which comprises a book holder for supporting a book in an open state, a movable unit disposed above the book holder and capable of vertical and horizontal movement, and a turn-over roller and a pinch member both mounted in said movable unit. The turn-over roller is brought into contact with the page of the book to be turned over with the movement of the movable unit. Then it is rotated toward the book seam to cause a plurality of book leaves including a leaf to be turned over to be turned up in between it and the pinch member. Then it is rotated in the opposite direction to release the turned-up leaves other than the leaf to be turned over. The remaining leaf to be turned over is moved with the movement of the movable unit toward the book seam to effect the turn-over.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1986Date of Patent: September 8, 1987Assignees: Ministry of International Trade & Industry, Agency of Industrial Science & TechnologyInventors: Toshiro Owada, Kenichi Kosugi, Yasuo Nagase

Patent number: 4685374Abstract: A page turning device is provided in which a first elongated arm is rotatably mounted for circular motion substantially parallel to but above the plane of the volume. A page lifting facility cooperates with the rotation of the first elongated arm to permit the first elongated arm to rotate between a lifted upper leaf and the remainder of the leaves of the volume. Continued rotation of the first elongated arm turns the upper leaf and positions the arm for turning of the next leaf. In this manner an unlimited number of leaves may be sequentially turned by a mechanically simple device which is immediately ready for use when a volume is positioned thereon.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 1985Date of Patent: August 11, 1987Inventor: Richard Goldner

Patent number: 4663873Abstract: An arrangement for turning the pages of a booklet within a copier. A air knife fluffer, the pages and a wheel is translated against the page to be turned and creates a buckle in the previously separated page. The vacuum wheel is then lifted bringing the page with it and rotated to flip the page. Afterwards, translation of the vacuum wheel without rotation continues in order to flatten the now flipped sheet. The vacuum is then returned to its home position.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1985Date of Patent: May 12, 1987Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: Troy Shinbrot

Patent number: 4644675Abstract: A page turner device for an open book comprises a support for the book, and a power driven disc configured to rest on the top of the pages of such open book. When the power drive is energized, the disc will start to rotate while in contact with the open pages. The disc has a finger portion which protrudes outwardly from adjacent portions of the disc, and a page curler drive is used for creating a curl or arch in the center portions of an open page, so that when the finger rotates to the proper position, it will go into the recess under the curl, and as it continues to rotate, the finger will pull the page with it. When the disc comes to a rest position, the finger will have completely opened the subsequent page. At the rest position a cam operates a switch to disable the power drive until such time as the person reading again initiates a manual switch to commence the page turning sequence.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1985Date of Patent: February 24, 1987Assignee: Regents of the University of MinnesotaInventors: John G. Patent number: 4545141Abstract: An automatic page turning apparatus associated with a closed passbook and the like includes feed means for positioning and holding one edge of a passbook at a station located along a guide chute, and a drive member movable in a direction perpendicular to the guide chute for engaging and moving the passbook to a bowed configuration where a rotating drive roller engages the cover member or the top page member of the bowed passbook for moving the member to a partially open position. Control means operates the feed means to move the passbook in a direction enabling the drive roller to move the partially open member to a fully open position. Circuit means varies the power applied to the drive member enabling the drive member to apply more pressure to the passbook where the cover member is to be turned.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 1984Date of Patent: October 8, 1985Assignee: NCR CorporationInventors: Masakazu Ito, Hikaru Izawa

Patent number: 4516866Abstract: Disclosed is a printing apparatus for printing a page of a book. The printing apparatus comprises printing means, page turning means, and a shutter movable between the printing means and the page turning means for guiding the book. The shutter is located inside the printing means to guide the book when the book is transferred to the printing means, and is taken out from the printing means and transferred to the page turning side to allow printing when the page of the book is to be printed by the printing means. The shutter is located inside the page turning means to guide the book when the book is transferred to the page turning means, and is taken out from the page turning means to allow page turning when the page of the book is to be turned by the page turning means. In such construction, the single shutter can guide the book for both printing and page turning.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1982Date of Patent: May 14, 1985Assignee: Tokyo Shibaura Denki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Masahide Yamauchi, Kunio Fukatsu

Patent number: 4488367Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus for selectively turning the pages of a book forward and backward. The apparatus of the present invention comprises a roller, first transfer means, pressing means, driving means, and second transfer means. The roller can rotate selectively in one and the other rotating directions. The first transfer means selectively transfers the roller between first and second positions. The pressing means presses the book against the roller. The driving means drives the roller to rotate selectively in the one and the other rotating directions. The second transfer means moves the book so that one page of the book lifted by the roller is laid on top of the other page. In such construction, the pages of the book can be turned selectively in the forward and backward directions by means of the single roller.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1982Date of Patent: December 18, 1984Assignee: Tokyo Shibaura Denki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Masahide Yamauchi, Kunio Fukatsu
