Patent number: 5839850Abstract: The following constitution is employed for enhancing the visual recognition of a road traffic sign by presenting a road traffic sign composed of a solid pattern having shades as visual image. A marking pattern divided into plural sections is tightly formed on the road, and the adjacent sections are mutually different in lightness, so that, in the road traffic sign of the invention, a solid figure is recognized as the visual image of the marking pattern. Herein, the adjacent sections have a lightness difference of 1 or more in Munsell value, and the lightness of each section is selected at lightness in two to four stages set at mutually different Munsell values. Moreover, when the adjacent sections are colored in hues mutually different in lightness, a more solid visual image will be obtained due to the difference in hue among the sections.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1996Date of Patent: November 24, 1998Assignee: Sekisui Jushi Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Kazuhiro Noguchi, Nobuhisa Deki, Takeshi Nagata, Yohei Inagaki

Patent number: 5761060Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for using information about colors, fonts, and viewing distances to predict the legibility of a sign. The invention takes into account the colors used in the sign, in order to allow the use of many different color combinations while still avoiding "strobing" from simultaneous contrast caused by complementary afterimages. A computer program accepts information such as the desired visual acuity, viewer velocity (for signs viewed from a car), font specification, ambient light strength, and the desired typeface color and background color. The program then predicts the legibility of a sign which uses the fonts and colors indicated under the given conditions. Thus, the program may be used to assess the effect of various changes on the sign's legibility without actually rendering or building the sign, installing it, and looking at it.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1996Date of Patent: June 2, 1998Assignee: University of UtahInventor: John T. The sign includes a first message "stop" on a first side and includes a second message "slow" on a second side. The handle assembly can be easily rotated 180 to selectively orient either the "stop" message or the "slow" message. Removable sign-to-light fasteners connect the sign to the bracket-supported light assembly. The sign-receiving bracket assembly includes a front bracket portion and a rear bracket portion, and a bottom portion of the sign is received between the front bracket portion and the rear bracket portion.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 1996Date of Patent: May 26, 1998Inventor: Edward J. Patent number: 5749673Abstract: A safety delineator is provided which includes a conical body portion to which is attached one or more vertical panels. A new and improved handle feature permits easy and comfortable full hand gripping of the delineator and also prevents sticking and jamming together of a plurality of the delineators when they are stacked. The delineators may be stacked without removing the vertical panels, since each vertical panel is particularly designed to wrap around the conical body portion to which it is attached as another vertical delineator slides over it.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 1995Date of Patent: May 12, 1998Assignee: Traffix DevicesInventors: Jack H.
