Patent number: 4278228Abstract: Support structures for highway signs and barricades include collapsible assemblies which cause the structure, upon impact by a vehicle, to rotate away from the impact without flying apart. The collapsible assemblies utilize a connector fixture to couple a first member to a second member. The connector fixture includes a pivot pin which provides an axis of rotation for the second member and shear pins which hold the second member in a fixed orientation until the application to the second member of an impact. The impact fractures one of the shear pins and the second member rotates about the pivot pin away from the impact. Single post and multiple post support structures are disclosed. A support structure having two vertical members collapses to a flattened position when struck from any direction. The vehicle passes over the flattened support structure. In an alternate embodiment, the support structure rotates upward upon impact and passes over the vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1980Date of Patent: July 14, 1981Assignee: GTE Products CorporationInventors: Hugo E. Patent number: 4270873Abstract: A delineator pole is provided which pivots when a force is applied thereto and returns to its original position upon release of the force. The pole includes upper and lower segments with a biasing spring completely housed within the lower pole segment which is held in a support structure. The upper and lower pole segments are joined together by the spring and are held in axial alignment by the mating cooperation of a rounded edge lip portion adjacent the lower pole segment and a rounded grooved flange adjacent the upper pole segment. Whenever the upper and lower pole segments are moved out of axial alignment, the force of the spring together with the rounded edge lip portion and the groove of the flange interact to guide the segments back into axial alignment.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 1979Date of Patent: June 2, 1981Assignee: Rapidgate, Inc.Inventors: Peter Laehy, Stefan A. Patent number: 4253415Abstract: Roadway traffic and/or warning signs are provided with the construction thereof being such so as to provide flexible and/or pliable structures which are simultaneously lightweight for easy handling, but are of substantial strength. The signs of the invention are, preferably, comprised of molded polyurethane foam of integral structure which will give upon impact without damage, and will revert to their previous position once the forces causing the impact are removed.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1979Date of Patent: March 3, 1981Assignee: Ferch & NabbenInventor: Alois Ferch
