Abstract: A printer receives image information from a host computer and performs printing based on the image information. When an optional unit is newly attached to the printer, the printer changes the device ID which is selected from an ID ROM in accordance with the optional unit. Then output from an interface circuit is changed so that the host computer detects the change of the output from the interface circuit. The host computer makes a device-ID request to the printer to obtain the device ID corresponding to the optional device. Abstract: In a printing apparatus, it is checked if a tab paper print setup is made. If it is determined that the tab paper print setup is made, it is checked if the face to be printed is the obverse or reverse face. If it is determined that the face to be printed is the obverse face, first drawing data is generated; if face to be printed is the reverse face, second drawing data is generated by adjusting the first drawing data.

  • Patent number: 7251044
Abstract: There are provided an image forming method and apparatus in which character string having one or more characters is registered as a regular character string, regular printing for printing the regular character string is instructed, irrespective of whether or not a character string other than the regular character string is being input or edited, and when regular printing is instructed, a regular character string image corresponding to the regular character string is printed as a print image. Irrespective of whether or not another character string is being edited, this construction enables the regular character string image of a registered regular character string to be printed at a desired time point through simple operations, while saving the capacity of the memory device.

  • Patent number: 7229225
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for specifying media in cluster printing systems that include printers that use device-specific media selection techniques, such as paper catalogs, media tray pulldown menus and media attribute pulldown menus. A universal media selector is provided that includes a universal paper catalog, an editor, a paper catalog translator and a tray associator. The universal paper catalog is a two-dimensional array that includes one or more entries that associate a media label with corresponding media attributes. The editor may be used to create, import, export and edit paper catalog entries in the universal paper catalog. The paper catalog translator is a two-dimensional array that may be used to translate attribute labels and associated values in the universal paper catalog to corresponding attribute names and associated values used in device-specific paper catalogs of printers included in the cluster printing system.

  • Patent number: 7223030
Abstract: A printing system (250) includes a printing subsystem (255) in the form of a printer assembly (14). The printing subsystem (255) includes a printer housing (257) in which a print engine (259) resides and a memory (261) for storing data indicating the position of labels on media. The contents of memory (261) can be obtained from an end user application (270) which may supply the position data to the printing subsystem (255) in a print data stream. Pre-programmed position data is read from a tag (88) on print media (28) having multiple tags embedded thereon. The pre-programmed position data is compared to position data received in a print request data stream to determine the position of at least one tag on the print media.

  • Patent number: 7207735
Abstract: The present invention increases the freedom of usage of a page design. A digital camera 1 generates, in a file format that can be parsed by a printer, a print job for printing a full page design in which an image desired by a user is applied to a page layout by using a layout definition file that describes a page layout containing one or more image areas disposed on a page, as well as an image file desired by the user that is applied to a predetermined image area in the page layout. The print job file thus generated (print job file) is parsed by a printer 13 and printing is executed on the basis of the result of this parsing. The layout definition file and image file are associated with the print job file.

Abstract: A printing system includes a printer and computers connected by an network. A mail server is provided for transmitting notification data from the printer to the computers in the form of an email message. Print data stored in the printer is erased once the print data has been used for reprint operations a certain amount of times. If the amount of print data stored in the printer exceeds a reference size, then print data sets are selected for erasure based on predetermined conditions. Data stored in the printer can be retrieved from the printer and amended at the computer.

Abstract: In a printing apparatus including a reception buffer which stores setting data and printing data of printing element arrays transmitted from a connected host device, and a printing buffer which stores the printing data of the printing element arrays in association with printing positions in a scanning direction, the printing data are controlled to be stored in the printing buffer by adjusting the storage positions of the printing data of the printing element arrays on the basis of registration information which is contained in the setting data and corresponds to the relative distance between the printing element arrays in the scanning direction. Read address information for reading out the printing data stored in the printing buffer is controlled for each printing element array. Printing is performed by driving each printing element array in accordance with the printing data read out on the basis of the read address information.

  • Patent number: 7189016
Abstract: A system and method are provided for the expedited reprinting of documents at a printer. The method comprises: receiving an initial print job identified with a job identification (JID); rendering the print job into a bitmap; in response to rendering the bitmap, initially printing a document; saving the bitmap in memory; and, in a job table, creating a cross-reference between the JID and the saved bitmap. Subsequently, the method comprises: receiving a selected JID; accessing the job table; accessing a print engine-ready bitmap associated with the JID by using the job table to locate a bitmap cross-referenced to the received JID; reading the located bitmap from a printer memory; and, reprinting a document in response to the bitmap. An associated network server can be used for posting a job table with selectable JIDs on an HTML webpage. Alternately, the JID selection is received in a print driver communication.
